    I have a wonderful Mexi Strat and both a SoCal and San Dimas Charvels. I love all three to bits, but they are different characters. Generally, the Strat is a late 60s muscle car in peak condition. The Charvel is a nimble 80s Porsche ready for the track. They scratch different kinds of itch for me!

      Anthony Couch it’s a 2011 San Dimas, so I think it’s Candy Red and not Ferrari Red. It’s a beauty! Slightly scalloped neck... I would have bought the Ibanez but for the pickups, they sound so generic to me, and the finish on the neck, my sweaty hands get stuck on anything else and I have to sand the neck with those green wash pads!

    I'm trying to figure out what you're doing to get better tuning stability from a 2 point strat bridge than a double locking floyd. If you have roller trees and you keep everything lubed up the strat will do pretty good but the floyd was invented for tuning stability. Especially when you're slamming on that trem arm and the fender will slip out every time you get a little carried away with it.

    • @brianvillage5
      @brianvillage5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s nothing to getting tuning stability out of a 2 point bridge. Set it up properly and use it. Recently Charvel stopped using two string trees because it was causing tuning issues, now they use a single string tree and short post locking tuners.

    • @deanmlshredder
      @deanmlshredder ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brianvillage5 you'll get stability but you'll never dump it like you can a Floyd.

      @@markslima1557 which neck do you prefer. I’ve always been a Fender Strat player and have always loved them from the feel to the tone to the tremolo. I picked up a 61 SG not too long ago and realized I might be missing out on some better options or at least equal but different. I do prefer the Strat neck and body style and pickup configuration and would love a Floyd Rose set up again. Part of me thinks I should just buy a Charvel and part of thinks it will be too close to the Fender Strats I own to justify buying it and it’s going to wind up feeling like the same guitar. Hopefully I am wrong and I sure there are differences. You mentioned the neck. Is the Charvel neck faster and easier to play

    Couple of things:
    The Charvel San Dimas is the OG Superstrat along with the So Cal. (So Cal is basically the same thing but with a scratchplate).
    This is the first,production Superstrat that served as the "blueprint" for many other famous Superstrat guitars,like the Ibanez JEM/RG models.
    Guitarplayers use to mod their Strats since the late 60´s but EVH is considered the "Father of the Superstrat" with his legendary "Frankenstrats".
    The basic idea is simple: combine the playabillity of a Strat with the fat humbucker tone of a L/P or SG and add a Floyd Rose,so that you can do all the cool whammy-bar tricks. Later they added more specs, like 24 frets, more ergonomic neck joint, neck-through construction etc. but the basic idea is the same: "Make a Strat on steroids".
    Even fender tried to get into the hype with their HM Strat Series,which they re-issued last year.
    Back in the 80´s ,many famous players would use Charvel Custom Shop models. Guys like George Lynch (he actually put an ESP sticker on his Charvel Tigerstripe,when ESP endorsed him), Satriani,Vai (both played custom shop Charvels before signing with Ibanez), Jake E.Lee (his white superstrat is actually a Fender Strat,that the Charvel custom shop modded), Warren DeMartini, Gary Moore (he was playing San Dimas Charvels with a single EMG 85 pickup in the 80s), Allan Holdsworth and even Jeff Beck.
    Sadly,Charvel went bankrupt during the 90´s when Grunge & Alternative essentially killed off guitar driven music and was bought by Fender.
    With the "Rennaissence" of 80´s Hardrock/Metal/Shred, Fender brought them back and nowadays you see even modern virtuosos like Guthrie Govan or Angel Vivaldi playing Charvels. And Charvel isn´t just making 80´s "shred-sticks" for nostalgia fans,they make also some very modern Superstrats with cutting edge specs,like roasted maple necks, special coil-split wirings etc.

    Strat for the tone, San Dimas for the shred. From a qualitative standpoint, seems like a San Dimas is a San Dimas is a San Dimas and they're all rad. Strats... whew, the quality really varies and not just in terms of country of manufacture. Worst Strat in our collection is a 2007-era MIA Strat Deluxe. Best is a circa '87 MIJ E-series.

    They havr the same parent company. Both Fender and Charvel, along with the EVH brand, are owned by Fender Musical Instruments. That would seem to suggest, that the Fender Company believes that there are merits to each brand. It also suggests that the higher end models are subject to high quality control standards. Certain EVH, Charvel and all Fender Stratocaster models start with similar bodies (typically Alder, sometimes Bass wood and. Swamp Ash) and necks (almost always some type of maple with maple, rosewood and even ebony fingerboards and have similar feels, thefc electronics (pick ups, pots) tend to be hotter on the Charvel and over the top on EVH (over wound to the extreme). You can find Strats with HSS (humbuckers in the bridge). Always choose a more conservative color, hot pink, purple, neon colors etc are cool in limited contexts. If you are a working musician and make your living securing traditional gigs: weddings, yacht clubs, banquets etc and are often expected to be on stage in a suit or sport coat, having something Clapton, John Mayer or Jeff Beck would play makes you much more likely to be chosen for the job or get future jobs than if you show up to the audition or gig dressed like some clown wearing parachute pants, a net tank top, hair extensions, black lipstick and eye liner, wearing more jewelry than Mr. T and slinging a hot pink super Strat.

    I Also prefer Fender Strat. At least for this not accurate comparison of these two high level strats. I say not accurate because of a two humbucker vs three single coil pickup is not aan accurate comparison. It will be preferable to have a Charvel with a little switch or at least push button on the volume knob to cut one of the humbucker pickup to make it single coil. So as the single coil pickups are always more cleaner than the humbuckers and the humbuckers more loud. The Charvel strat sound more muffed than the Fender one. If It's not about at this I think the personality of these two wonders is almost the same with single coil on the two.
