Mihanikos - the Kalymnos Sponge Divers Dance - Greek local dancing and music

The Kalymnos Sponge Divers Dance, Mihanikos salutes the sponge divers that came in from the sea with the decompression sickness but still wanted to dance. It is always performed by men standing in line and is in many ways a melancholic dance as explained prior to the recording by the girl clapping in the beginning of the video. I took this at Vakis and Nicole Rigas' wedding at Kalymnos in Greece.

My dad was a sponge diver on an all Greek boat in Tarpon Springs, FL. He learned the trade & my grandfather bought his own boat for our family. My cousin & I would fly down to help during the summers. I have my dad's love for the Greek culture & stop at the sponge docks anytime I'm in Florida, hoping to make it to Greece one day. I have great memories from those days! Some of my greatest moments in life were working on a sponge boat in the middle of the ocean with a boat full of Kentucky boys! Who says we're just hillbilly farmers here!?😂

That is great to hear. I hope you make it down to Greece to witness the dance yourselves one day. They still sell the sponges, so I assume that they also have divers around the island.
