been a bucket man myself. Simply nowhere to dump the water save my balcony pot plants which are on the other side of my apartment. Defs backbreaking work but then again i love my fish and its always worth it week after week. If one day one of your filters kicks the bucket i would recommend you go for two massive sponge filters alongside your remaining one. I use one internal to save on the noise and two sponge filters myself since i sleep a single wall away and its been three years no problemo.
      edit: i've got a 50gallon, 190L freshwater@@SimplyShrimps

If you have a lot of time in hand during a water change, to avoid temperature flactuation when filling up with a hose from the tap garden, just set the tap to a trickle to let the heater catch up and heat the water up.

Have you ever noticed any detrimental effects to your filter bacteria (increase in ammonia/nitrite levels)? I was always led to believe that dechlorinator took a while to convert the chlorine / chloramine, it wasn’t an instant thing…….I have a little 100l tank, I make up the water a good few days in advance and bubble vigorously……but I do buffer the water as I have Tanganyikans and need time for the buffer and lake salts to completely dissolve.

Great video! Think this is the one that made me confident I want to get a larger tank. Only aiming for about 180 liter though! Going from a 55L, does anyone have an opinion on if that upgrade could be a good one?

I too have a 500lt + aquarium but the way I do my water changes is to pre heat and dechlorinate the new water first in a 200lt food grade plastic barrel and then pump it straight back into the tank with a cheap pond pump, that's less dechlorinater used and no temperature change at all

    • @SimplyShrimps
      @SimplyShrimps  6 ปีที่แล้ว

That’s pretty much the best way you could do it :) Hopefully one day I’ll have enough space to do the same.

Simply Shrimps the problem I have mate is very high nitrates in my tap water so I have to filter the tap water first into the barrel, the barrel is quite easy to hide behind my shed when not in use, try amazon or ebay for the barrel. Your way is fine but a change in the water temp can also affect the filter bacteria if its quite a bit different, keep up the great videos 👍

i have a 20 gallon long tank that's about 12 gallons tall. i'm currently trying to clean it out, and it's quite a toiling task. i have to clean it because there's this decoration that leaves a slimy residue that flakes all over the tank (it's one of those glo-fish anemones, don't buy them for cold water/axolotl tanks). my axolotl really likes it but it has to go :[

Aren’t there temp differences.. my tank water is 25c.. tap water maybe 20... in winter it’s probably 5c. .. the overall tank water may be say 24.. but isn’t the water around the hose outlet probably about 20 c??

    • @SimplyShrimps

I got fed up with the chore of bucket emptying and came up with better solution. I drilled a hole in the side of my tank and fitted a copper pipe with a tap at the level of water I need to drain. I can then simply connect 1" wide pvc tubing onto the pipe and lead it's length to the bath. It's just a case of turning on the tap to empty the aquarium 😀.

I have a 220 gallon. I got myself a pump attached it to a hose and do 3/4 empty in about 5 minutes. And then to fill up i attached a hose to my water faucet adjust temperature and fill tank right back up. After the fill up I add water conditioner and a little salt and done. I never ever use buckets. I rig up the most efficient systems to work for me and make sure to get it done quickly.

I just bought a 270 gallon tank with 3 Pacus in them. Last time I did a fish tank I had a 55 gal. And most of my fish died. I messed up by filling the water all the way up and didn’t make sure the tap water was the same temp has the one inside the tank. I’ve now learned. Did you put the tap water declorifier before you put the tap water in or after? And do you also turn off the filter and heater and etc while doing the water change? Please lmk! Thank you

I know this comment was 3 years ago. Pretty sure he dechlorinated prior to refill . I don't have anywhere near a big tank so my experience with a small tank is: I turn off my filters, or push down an internal filter so its never above water while on. When I hadn't turned off an air pump (for a sponge filter), it seemed to become noisy - I don't want to damage it obviously. I keep my heater lower than the amount of water I'm removing to avoid turning it off.

De chlorinator pretty much works straight away, I’d add it first so it can work on the new water as it enters. If you add the tap water first it runs the risk of the chlorine damaging the beneficial bacteria in your aquarium :)

Only difference is that I've always shut my FX6 off because I feared the new water would not be completely dechlorinated and it would hurt the beneficial bacteria in filter. Looks like it doesn't effect it at all:) Kinda feel like doing a WC now lol. Great vids I've been enjoying them for a week now.

Wait what happens your tap water has ammonia and nitrites? I tested my tap water and that's what has in there. I use buckets and treat water in that and have a filter running in it until ammonia and nitrites are gone out of the water. 😭 Isn't there a easier way pour water into the tank.

    • @charliethecairnterrier

You can use seachem prime if you have ammonia and nitrities in the tap water like I do. It takes care of it immediately. Just dose it in the bucket and you can pour it in, no waiting.
