well there are all kinds of pathways to form all kinds of things, just depends on the synthesis. reduce a carbonyl to get an alcohol, do williamson ether synthesis. boom, ether. oxidize an aldehyde to get a carboxylic acid, perform esterification. boom, ester. you can make anything from anything, more or less, with enough steps.
