  • I (JB) am super excited about this one! This is a project that I have been tinkering with for over 2 years, and I am pleased to announce that the designs are now available on Thingiverse and we are now selling kits at Goodandbasic.com and on Etsy.

    You can also print one yourself. I've posted the design on thingiverse at this link.

    Can I get the measurements for the cigar box? I’m sure bigger would be better than smaller when I go look for one.

      Did you ever figure out a good size? I'm cutting mine out today, so really want to make sure it's right.

    I was pleased to see you are using readily available components for the parts that are not "printed." I am very excited that you used cotton balls for your demo. I plan on using the thread made for biodegradable fishing nets.

    That was really cool! Liked the demonstration with the cotton ball. For some reason I didn't think it would work with those! XD fun to watch

      Great thing about cotton balls and cotton batting (the stuff you use to stuff quilts and pillows) is that it is already cleaned and combed.

    Awww yes, more textile videos from G&B are always welcome. Any plans for a "farm to table" item - card and spin some wool and knit yourself a hat or pair of socks with it? I imagine it would take a very long time to spin enough to thread to use on a loom
    Edit: I somehow missed the previous video about 3d printing sock knitting machines which gives a bit of a hint!

      @@GoodandBasic Etsy served me your product listing for the charkha kit when I searched for a kick spindle. (And I do love the charkha kit.) I've always been a little put off by kick spindles because they either look like the kick wheel is really heavy or like they're so light the thing isn't going to stay in place when you kick it. And a nice one is ~$400 but the most difficult engineering is decreasing the friction where the spindle rests against stand.

    • @GoodandBasic
      @GoodandBasic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds like a solvable problem. I'd probably make the wheel with cutouts for adding metal weights.

    I got your charka kit and love its looks. Unhappily, I can't get the pieces onto the rods for the spindles. Will the lighter trick work to make the holes larger?

    • @GoodandBasic
      @GoodandBasic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The spindle pieces are intended to fit quite tightly, and the holes occasionally come out undersized from the printing process. If you can't get the spindles through the holes, remove the "L" shaped hinge pin from the spindle holder and use it as an awl, rotating it back and forth in the holes in the spindle discs and spindle pulleys to make them the same size as the spindles. They should fit well after that. JB

    I use bits of corn husk for spindle bearings on my other charka. They don’t get as fuzzy and still hold a bit of oil

    I watched a video yesterday of a 3d quill for the EEW by dreaming robots. *
    His is thicker (the quill) but seeing yours, it would be interesting if his quill was thinner for using with cotton.
    Electric spinner.

    It is sobering that cotton balls, so readily available at the poundshop/dollar store, is perfect for spinning.
    I am itching to try a tahkli style supported spindle i want to make with a double pointed knitting needles (for socks), a kitchen ceramic bowl and a few heavy nuts...
    But the roving was an issue.. (the hobby shop asks nearly 3 pounds for 10gr of wool roving.)
    Thanks.
    Time I popped out for two dog brushes and a bag of cottonballs.

    3 questions. Is there a way to get the box to stay still without having to clamp it? When I get mine delivered, I will use a plank of wood for the spindle parts but don't want to clamp it as I do not have one. Is there a way to make it to where it is not so loud??? Finally, think you could 3D print a handheld cotton gin?? Maybe with 2 rollers and a hand crank? Thanks!
