when I drag the image on top of my background as you instructed, why is it magnified??

The image you're dragging onto your background might be larger than the background itself, which is why it appears magnified. To fix this, you can use the Arrange tool to resize the image, making it smaller and more appropriate for your background. Remember to maintain the aspect ratio when resizing to avoid distorting the image.

My Mac doesn't have a backspace button, it has a delete button. When I press this, it deletes the entire layer instead of the unwanted background. Please assist!

Generally speaking, that key should act the same way as the Backspace key but if you can easily reproduce this, it'd be great if you could email us about this at support@pixelmator.com and we'll take a closer look.

Found out that if you are editing RAW images, you cannot delete the selection. The whole image gets deleted when you hit the backspace/delete button. It works on jpegs.

That's because RAW images are a little special - you'd generally need to use duplicated layers and masks to achieve the same result.
