      Just yesterday, I got a brand of sacrifice from berserk in my right calf with other symbols from Watchmen and FMA and tomorrow I'll complete it with some Avatar TLAB, SW, Golden Kamuy, DBZ and HxH. Yes, my leg now is a red flag that screams "doesnt shower". Also One piece and Bioshock in my arms

    As a tattooer I would highly recommend finding an artist who specializes in coverups. Don't let someone bully you into believing that you need to do something big bulky and dark to cover those things. A good tattooer can use what's there, add color and shape and distract the eye. If you have any questions I would happily answer them!

      For the "Atheism symbol" one, a good artist could easily turn that into a coiled up Xenomorph or something imo. That was the first thing I thought of anyone. Or even incorporate it into an overall science spiral tattoo that also resembles a spiral galaxy?

      I got this shitty ass small tiki face thing when I was drunk in Thailand. I don't really like it or the spot I got it on my arm. It looks like a temporary tattoo that you press with the wet cloth but it doesn't go away. It's actually terrible and I'm definitely gonna take your advice to cover it haha

    I'd love to get a tattoo in the future - but knowing my indecisive ass, I would just regret it in a couple months. It couldn't be a last minute decision for me, it'd have to be something thought about and processed over a long amount of time, lol.

      I haven't regretted any of my tattoos yet. But also as a rule I have to decide to get it.. then wait an entire year before actually doing it. I've avoided a lot of bad ink that way

    • @aronnemcsik

      I have a bunch of tattoos and have one covered by now, and am planning to get at least one more covered. And let me tell you. Tattoos just become part of your body, and if you really get sick of them, you can get them covered! It's really not as big a deal as people make it in their brains. Especially if you're really into tattoos and think you will want more than just a few. Your body is just an empty sketchbook, have fun with it!

      I don’t know if I’d ever get a tattoo, but if I did, it would be deeply personal. The only ones I’ve considered are memorials to my parents and a stylized line art cat because I’m obsessed with cats. By the cat, the names of my cats. If I had something permanently put on my body, it’d have to be fundamental to my life.

  • @jbca

    • @flavoredwallpaper

      I didn't even know "atheism" had a symbol. A mere lack of belief shouldn't really have a symbol...

    • @jbca
      @jbca ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@flavoredwallpaper The atheism that he’s referring to (or at least that I was referring to) wasn’t atheism as a generic concept, it was Atheism, a particular bundle of philosophy that was a popular combination at the time. It was as much of a broad philosophy/worldview as many people’s religious beliefs, so I don’t think it’s entirely inappropriate to describe it in similar term. (Not that I endorse a lot of that package of philosophy any more.)

    I only have 7 tattoos so far but I've been getting them since literally the day I turned 18. I think they're such a cool way to display our personal journey! Do I have a few I wouldn't get nowadays? sure, but I still think they mark important stuff at the time I got them and represent past me hehe

    I have Kaladin's brands and the First Ideal in Alethi Women's Script in white ink on me left forearm. I wanted them to look as much like brands as possible and the result is amazing. It looks like a scar, but smooth. I also have the Feruchemical symbol for gold on my ribs as a symbol for health and to commemorate my mom beating breast cancer.

    I love listening about people's tattos, and the dragon one is stunning indeed. I have a tatto inspired by the Witcher (the same place and symbol Ciri got in book 4), and a snake which is very vaguely based on the Little Prince. I'm still debating if I should go for the next one - I like the ones I have, and I have an idea for a design, but I also don't feel I need it right now.

    When you do the coverups you can initially do a few sessions of laser removal to lighten the really thick dark lines so that the cover tattoo doesn’t have to be over the top with design/colour/size and covers it a little easier!

    @Bailey_93 ปีที่แล้ว +31

  • @meghanc8967
    @meghanc8967 ปีที่แล้ว

    for the cover-ups you can look into doing laser removal, you don't need to remove the whole thing (would take multiple sessions and can be $$$) but you can lighten them/break up the thick dark lines a little in 3/4 sessions and that will give you a lot more options for cover ups. You're a good candidate for removal because it is dark ink on light skin which helps the laser track and break up the ink.

    I think you tend to regret tattoos less if they were well thought out and remind you of sth you're passionate about or a good memory or sth.
    If I ever decide to get a tattoo, I think I might pick the flower the road I grew up at is named after or a sparrow, as that's what my last name means. Both reminds me of a happy childhood and my family. I just haven't found many designs that I liked that much regarding those two

    I really like well made tattoos and I highly respect the art. The problem is that tattoos are forever. Yes I know somebody will suggest cover ups, but lets face it at worse you will look like a 90's public school desk covered in marker, at best you will have a new design but limited in so many ways that its basically a distraction from an old bad/outdated design. Im a graphic designer, I have done tattoo designs for people, but I would never be able to choose something for myself. In all those years I saw so many design trends, gone through so many phases that I dont think that I could find a design or a style that I would like on me forever.
    What I never understood was the tendency of people to throw tattoos on them on a whim. And what really boggles my mind are the people that will pick a design from those stock albums that every tattoo parlor has. I mean, people are willing to have on them forever what was basically clip-art before the clip art was invented. If you are going to go through with this, at least do something original!

    I don’t have any tattoos yet, but I’ve recently been playing with the idea of getting some variation of “life before death” from stormlight. Kaladin’s brush with depression and suicidality in the way of kings was insanely resonant with me and his interpretation of life before death is almost EXACTLY the justification I used to dig myself out of a very dark place. When I read that part of the book I just broke down, bc it felt so cathartic to see my experience articulated so well. I’ll always love Kaladin.

    You honestly should do a Fantasy/Sci-fi Tattoo roasting! It may seem harsh and brutal, but I think there would be a lot of people who would consent to having their tattoos roasted! I for example have a D&D tattoo that is just 6 dots with two of them filled in to represent the saving throws for a sorcerer (Con & Cha) Its silly and dumb and I love it! I also love the silly comments people have given me on them too!

    Deeply fascinating. Especially the atheist tattoo. It's interesting how something like atheism can represent being a dumb kid to one person, and personal growth to another. My equivalent to you was being a bible bashing zealot who listened to Christian metal when I was seventeen. Basically the same energy, feeling like I knew everything, except I thought that meant I knew there was a god whereas you seemed to have gone in the opposite direction. I was anti tattoo back then, cause of course I was, but I remember I had this idea for a black sheep standing in front of a bloody cross. I remember thinking that's the tattoo I would have gotten if I believed in them. Now after a lot of growing and breaking away from certain ideologies I identify as an atheist. And oh boy, I can only imagine how I'd feel having the tattoo I'd of gotten at seventeen on my body now. I wouldn't get the atheist symbol either- I actually didn't even know there was an atheist symbol- but it's interesting to think something that represents maturing for me basically played the part religion did in my edgy phase for you. The whole video is timely because my wife and I are planning a trip to Seattle and I'm gonna get my first tattoo while there. 🙂

    Can you expand on the one that is a "stolen design"? It seems like several of the tattoos you have are images from copyrighted work (like the wheel of time chapter symbol), which typically qualifies as fair use right? So what makes an image you found online and got as a tattoo stolen when the others are not? I'm genuinely curious what the difference is (as someone who has a portion of a piece of artwork tattooed on me).

    • @kellyy8735
      @kellyy8735 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I feel like there's a difference between television and book symbols versus drawings and paintings created by an artist. When it comes to copyright and trademarking, both do in fact qualify, but ones considered morally wrong, while the other is (for the most part) accepted. You can't really steal a symbol and take credit for it as your own, especially when its from something like wheel of time or lord of the rings. You are using it as a way to honor where it came from, and show your love for the books. Its a different case with drawings and paintings. Sorry if what I'm saying doesn't make any sense, I'm having trouble conveying my thoughts into words. Do you kinda get the gist of my words?

    Thanks for a fun video! Love your view on tatoos, personally I think even if it's not something you would have chosen today it can be a fun memory or say something about how you were then and that's ok. I have six tattoos, and I just look at them fondly as reminders of who I used to be :) All more or less fantasy related I would say, but not directly connected to a specifik book. I have a fairy, a big old tree, a key, elemental symbols, a moon and a compass. Basically a whole fairytale, could be used as writing exercise, trying to incorporate them all :D

I remember finishing the first one and immediately starting a new game to experience the story again. My 2nd tattoo is the science badge from Star Trek because I love the original series and I got a BS in Biochemistry. My last tattoo is Amaterasu from the video game Okami which is my 2nd favorite video game. I let the tattoo artist design it how he wanted using things from the game like the ink stokes and sun design. I would love to get some book related ones; maybe one relating to the Tortall universe because Tamora Pierce is one of my favorite authors.

    I'm really happy I stumbled across your video, because I've been playing around with the idea of getting a tattoo inspired by the LOTR and the Silmarillion, but have been to self conscious to actually believe I'd get it, but now I'm not.

    Tattoo artist here. You can absolutely cover big black tattoo with something else. It’s old, It’s faded and there are inka and techniques that will make it even less visible. Find a good cover up guy and let him cook

    I mean, except the dragon, are any of the designs on your body original? They are all taken from various kinds of media to show your connection to them, a number of different artists created them. What's the difference between those and the flower thing?
    You're not selling the design, I don't think you've stolen anything, or if you are it's no less so than all the other "stolen" images.

    I know you mentioned how Amazon audible treated the Indy authors how do you feel about Kindle unlimited? I realize they are owned by Amazon too. I do read a lot of books from that subscription a lot. Most of those books on that site I cannot find a digital or fiscal book at my local county library.

    I've been sitting on 2 tattoos for myself that I plan to get. The first is Ace's tattoo (Luffy's bro) in the exact same spot he has it. My second (though I want this one first) is my first D&D character's jolly roger. It's an orc skull and crossbones with bloody bottom fangs. Not sure about any others yet.

    My most recent one was a full sleeve with themes of Princess Mononoke on my right arm but COVID happened so I only have half of it done so far on my forearm. Also the tattoo artist moved away during COVID meaning a future session would be a hassle to schedule and I don't even like the result all that much. I thought about covering it too but not sure it's possible with how much space it takes on my forearm and how dark the half sleeve is. Planning on getting more but a bad experience turned me off for a few years.

    I'm thinking of getting a discworld quote tattoo. I heard people tend to regret quote tattoos so I decided to sit on it for a few years before getting it, just to be sure I won't regret it. Well, it's almost three years and I still really want that damn tattoo so it looks like it passes the test.

    I always loved tattoos. My main problem as a huge fantasy nerd I love a lot of things related to the genre so it could be a dangerous path for me to take if I start getting references to all things I like... I still really appreciate the art but honestly I have no tattoos and to be completely honest the main thing that has prevented me from getting them is a random quote from Ozzy Osbourne I heard once saying "to be somebody unique don't have a tattoo cause everybody and their friend has got a tattoo" and it just stuck with me 🤣

    • @elenafriese891
      @elenafriese891 ปีที่แล้ว

      Counterpoint: tattoos are art, no one expects to be unique because they have _a_ painting, but they might if they have a Vermeer or something. Or they might ignore the specialness idea because they do truly find their painting beautiful

    I love tattoo's (my girlfriend has a sleeve tattoo down her left arm) but I can never get one on myself, mainly because I am too fussy, and will most likely get one then instantly regret it and want it removed the day after. My mind is never 100% satisfied. I will have to stick putting ink to paper over skin :P

    I wonder if you’d be allergic to vegan colored ink too.
    I have a LOT of skin sensitivity problems and asked my artist to use vegan ink in hopes that I would be less sensitive to it. It healed very well!! But I don’t have an example of regular ink on my skin as a comparison. The only tattoo I have right now is an old textbook-style anatomical heart.

    You can still be agnostic and be an atheist though. Like, not believing in any god currently doesn't close you off for any possibility of any kind of deity (unless you are an anti-theist). So, I wouldn't beat myself too much over that tattoo tbh. And, it kind of looks cool imo. We stress over the simplest things sometimes, dw, you are your own worst judge. Nobody else is cringing at you (maybe with you if they feel like they made edgy decisions like that when they were young, but honestly, let that be the "worst mistake" - I don't think it is a mistake necessarily - that you have ever done when you were young). But thanks for being vulnerable.

    I am planning to get at least one tattoo (and most likely more), but the one I'm sure I want to have made into my body is related to the fantasy series that made me love reading, which is the Percy Jackson series, I used to read books more as a chore but then I got the Lightning Thief as a 12 yo and read it in three days, a week later I got the next two books on that series and also finished them in two to three days each, so in honor of that series I plan to put in my right forearm a Camp Jupiter tattoo (cuz it's the one thing that I thought really could fit as a tattoo) and personalize it as a child of Hephaestus tattoo (since I'm an engineer or at least studying engineering) and have one line for every year after I became a full fledged engineer (until 10 probably, 'cause I don't want it to be endless and 10 is the longest a demigod in Camp Jupiter had to serve in the 12th legion). I have also had thoughts of getting a Joestar Star from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure on the back of my shoulder, but I have my doubts about that one, I will probably get something of Brandon Sanderson's work, probably the symbol for iron, since it's one of my favorite metals of mistborn, and maybe Bridge 4's symbol somewhere. Lastly, I'm gonna have to think about what exactly to get, but something referencing One Piece I'm pretty sure I want tattooed on my body

    my (first, currently only) tattoo was a xmas present from my work. I plan to have 3 more (2 complimentary, 1 from covid - phoenix) . it's a lion rampant. was ok first layer color, & second & even 3rd, somewhere btw 3/4/5 colours over same area - omg - next layers, same place, bit intense...
    background: started working for this company in either June or July 1998. I did not meet the CEO/Owner of the company until my first day of work. (2 stage interview - she was on leave for both). my first day of work, having never met the boss/owner I *changed* the VALUES of her company (from passive, eg, 'we will work with' to active/proactive 'we work with...'
    words matters. my version, not just "immediately" laminated values from that day, laminated, distributed by reception - 'new values' (usually, as clique as it is now, complete company values/plans, fro reception up - my values, as is - published - not a word, bit of formatting ever changed over next 3 years.
    4 month review "you fit so well into company, like you have always been here, only thing you're missing is tattoo'. I laughed, agreed. company was occupational health & safety management systems consultancy. my xmas 1998 present was $100 voucher for a tattoo.
