Today I have a couple of chords that sound fantastic together and once you learn them, they will give you a rich new sound in guitar’s favorite tonality of, “E Minor.” To get things started we’re going to learn all about these two chords, and then, I’m going to expand on both with two more “bonus” chords.
This lesson introduces a group of four chord patterns that are all based within, “E Minor.” The lesson contains chord voicing examples that will work through the patterns of each chord to help provide you with a solid foundation for the second half of the lesson.
The lesson also includes two bonus chords. One is a simple “C” Major shape - that you probably already know. The other bonus chord is a shape that introduces one of the most full sounding inverted harmonies.
This unique harmony is one that all of the world’s most famous guitar players love to use in the open position. Its format is from the quality of a sound that is referred to in harmony as the, “Major 6th.”
To wrap up the lesson I’m going apply all of the chords across a chord progression in, “E Minor.” The progression will incorporate a simple and easy to play finger-picked approach that will help provide you with a very cool sound that uses all of the chords covered throughout this guitar lesson.

It's nice to have short lessons that focus on usable content that you can quickly absorb
Yes
As a singer/strummer it's nice to learn these different chord voicings for common chords. It really adds so much to the sound especially on acoustic when you let the open strings ring out. Great work again.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching.
Very nice quick lesson. The high end hammer on/off on the C and the B sound great. The chord progression of Em, Bm7, C and the great D6/F# (my personal favorite) works so well in a zillion songs. Well done.
Perfect clear simple lesson. Beautifully sequenced!
Love It Andrew! Sounds great! Love "Broken " chords! Thank you for the Lesson!
Excellent fingering for a Bm7. Been playing for 50+ years and have found a new variation. Thanks CGS!
Thank you so much, a lot of your content has improved my expression and creativity on the bass - that's huge, to me !
Nice combination of chords!! Thanks for sharing!!
More and more interesting and wonderful lessons every day 🥰
Very nice! Beautiful voicings on that progression. Thanks for helping us out! Keep up the good work!!!!
Thank you for watching and for the kind words comment!
I like the inversion, I have used, without thinking, it but didnt know its actual construction, I sometimes use the key of Bm in signwriting, as it works well for many male and female voices, be interested in other interesting shapes in that key.
Wonderful. That’s all. Simply wonderful.
What a lesson mate, perfect presentation and thanks so much its perfect for my experience level.
SRV - Riviera Paradise - uses that Em voicing - beautiful
Awesome lesson cool sounds
Well that was cool. I had my guitar behind me when I came across this video, so I picked it up and shazam beautiful sounds,,,,Thank you
Me too it was like wow
Thanks again for another instruction. Such a good talent. Your a certified gunslinger
You are very welcome, thanks for watching!
This chord pattern reminded me of CSN song “Just a song before I go”. Very nice.
Totally agree
Fretting an F# instead of a G in the Em chord sounds really nice. 074000, bottom to top. It adds a 9th to the mix.
very kind of you to show us. Thank You. Appreciated
Beautiful! Thank you.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much for sharing this!!!
Thanks I have a screwed up finger so I’m always looking for chords like that ‘Em. Also different chord progressions.
Very nice! Thank you!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Forgive my correction, Andrew. At 2:58 "Perfect fifth D note on second string open" should be B note. Great lessons
Ya heard me wrong, I did most certainly did say, "Perfect fifth B note" (I did not say, "D"). - Andrew
It has to be my hearing, I'm afraid. Please accept my apologies.
As a guitar teacher, I’ve found that thirds make weak bases. Yes it is an inversion - just not a very useful one. Strong bases are first and fifth notes.
D6F# is one of the 2 chords on a Horse with no name. 😊
TH-cam algorithms know that I just have been playing the D6 F sharp on horse with no name about an hour ago..😂
3:33 I also like to add F# on the high E string on that one. If you use this same chord position and add G on both of the E strings, it makes a very voice-y G2.
4:10 I have never liked the traditional C major. That third over the root sounds too clunky to me. I like to play G-C-mute-G-C-E. It's kind of awkward to recondition yourself to place your fingers for this voicing if you are used to the old fashioned one, but it definitely sounds more open and less campfire-y.
C also sounds awesome when played as a fifth: G-C-mute-G-D-G. Same thing with G major: I play G-mute-D-G-B-G, or play D instead of B if you want to make it a fifth chord. These two fifth chord voicings are particularly effective on electric guitar where standard C and G chords just sound too messy (in my opinion).
4:48 Don't think I have ever used this one before! Maybe as a passing chord when walking up from E to A? 🤔 Thanks for the tip 👍
Thanks
Thank you so much!!!
Hi! I'm looking into buying a classical guitar. Could you please tell me which model you're using? Since you're using it for your videos, I'm sure you're very pleased with it. Thanks and all the best! :)
I really like this how could I not Know chords like these I was taught the quicker and easier way which is wrong
A lot of guitarists in the more raw or experimental punk and indie areas will just use an "alternate tuning" aka "idk what this tuning is but I made it easier to play this one song/chord by tuning this one string down and this one up" and the song sounds difficult but it's actually just some basic shapes in a straightforward pattern
Just a suggestion: Might help a lot specially for beginners if you use a guitar with the dots clearly seen.
mmmmm, i've played these delicious chords for years, soooo goood ❤❤
I hearing a few songs in there,, particularly moby
Shallow with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga for instance.
Why not finger the second fret of the first string when making the b minor 7 chord?
Just found your channel; great content.
This is a great progression; thanks!
I think you are playing an Alahambra? If so, which model?
I have been looking at the 5PCW E8.
That's a tasty little piece. Thanks.
Just found your YT Channel. I like it. Can I ask who made your guitar?
Just play the Am and Em with the rest of your fingers while your 1st finger makes a barré in 7th position.
What guitar are you playing?
dear secret story teller around Bm & Em, i'm an old guitarist having guitar 4 more than 35 yrs !
meanwhile i am not native English so, most of times i need automatic English subtitle of videos in TH-cam, but yours is disable! with many thanks in advance, please make sure to enable mentioned feature in yor videos.
Thank You,
Hello, thank you for watching. The TH-cam "Sub-titles" feature is not something that we (as creators), have much control over. Either TH-cam automatically adds the sub-titles (done through TH-cam A.I.), or the "CC" doesn't appear. Unfortunately we cannot easily do anything much about it.
it almost sounds like alex lifeson of rush used those type of chords. awesome sound.
Almost?
Hey, that's my shirt!!!! Lol
You remind me of Sen Connery in A man who would be king.
I remember Randy Rhodes use that Em chord, I think in Crazy Train. But, I'm going to use it in my own stuff. Great lesson. The Patreon handout was really good to have. You make great content.
Cool, thanks! Believe that you are correct with Crazy Train!
Maybe a short
Nice
Good stuff. What strings and gauge are you using?
I only use D'Addario Strings. These ones are the; HARD TENSION Rectified Nylon Trebles Classical Guitar Strings (Model: EJ31).
