I suggest you move them after dark. It would be less traumatic and easier on everyone, especially in the heat. My Black Australorp suffers in the heat.

Hi Pat, my girls have been panting too. We've been giving them frozen watermelon so that they can keep cool. It's extremely hot here in Arkansas. Please hydrate and move slow. Love both your channel.

After the hurricane went past us we`ve had daytime temps in the 70s and 80s in central Louisiana and it was in the 60s last night. Hard to believe this in July.

Yes, keeping the hens cool in the 90 and 100 degree heat is quite the challenge. I found building an inexpensive canvas top gazebo over the run and then bird netting all around keeps them safe and cool. To even help them a little more I use a cobra mister that I connect to the hose and let it go from 2PM - 6PM. Very little water comes out, but the mist really helps. I also use large planter pot drain saucers filled with cool water. They wade in it. You can also add ice to their water fonts. Try not to give them fruits or vegetables that are high in carbs. The corn will generate more body heat as will the watermelon or sweet squashes. When I had given them watermelon in the past, they have a number 3 problem which dehydrates them even more. I only use the watermelon when I have a sick hen who won't eat or drink. It's easier to entice them to eat and replenishes their electrolytes and rehydrates them.

I love this channel. It used to have chickens years ago and loved caring for them. Unfortunately the development I live in now doesn’t allow them. They are so interesting to watch! Stay as cool as u can. Maybe mist the chicks down occ. the iced watermelon idea sounds good.

Patrick, you can plant dwarf everbearing mulberry trees for shade and food for them. They will grow over 12 to 15 feet in two years and create a lot of shade and food. These grow about 25 feet if not pruned. The dwarf part is more about the berry size but they`re one of the best tasting and very prolific after three years. Ripe berries will fall.

We love the mulberries too- having the mulberry trees keeps the birds from eating cherries, currants and red raspberries

@@christineortmann359 I`ve planted four mulberry trees between my fig trees and the woods. Hopefully this will save my figs but I`m gonna get fine mesh coverings for all my fig trees. I planted Brown Turkey and Celeste trees since they are old standards that do well in Louisiana and I`m rooting cuttings to give the birds some fig trees nearby. The Brown Turkey trees are already starting to make figs. The Celeste should begin producing next year. I want way more fruit than I can eat so I can preserve a lot for winter.
