In the first story it is not right or even necessary to disturb a lonely man just because he is not talking to anyone or giving candies. He should have been disturbed only after he commits a crime.
What horrible children, the fact that they tormented him was not necessary for the story. But I suppose it turned out they tormented a wretched man (edited to fix a spelling error ;-;)

The family across the street from the alcoholic who beat his wife said she used them as her scapegoat. That’s definitely not the right word.
