I imagine the plan by pitt is to have Russel start at that low cap figure, hope he plays like his old self and lead the team far, then they'll let him walk in FA to a big contract and get a compensation pick. Fields will have this year to be under the media radar, back up Russel, learn the Steelers system and then get his prove it year the following season.

Someone else mentioned this, but it is a sound business decision. If he goes through the workouts and does great, it doesn't help him. He'll still be the 1st or 2nd receiver taken and go in the top 5. If he has a bad day, he could drop to the 3rd or 4th receiver, and possibly go 8th to 12th. Working out is all risk.

You realize Pickett has 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in his CAREER. Steelers offense has been bottom tier, Pickett has zero pull as to what should happen. Now he’ll start his career backup journeyman career in Philly

@@relaxgaming8872jets will have to cut him for anyone to pick him up because of his salary. I'm sure someone would pick him up as a back up but to trade for him you'd have to give up a pick and pay his 8 mil a year contract. Most back ups make close to the vet minimum and provide relative qb play.
