« Late night ideas have something good - especially in the non-alcoholic atmosphere of those long Sufi nights of Konya, some magic can spark and still not fade in the light of the sun.
It’s a late encounter between Rana and Özgür which throw the dices for next morning’s recording - a ride to the nearby historical town of Sille, and an hour in front of us to dialogue in between two rare artists who never met before.
Özgür is a figure of a certain renewal of sacred folk in Turkey, and everybody in town was waiting for him eagerly. Rana is herself a radical renovator of Sufi dances and has been experimenting and opening a new path for the past decade.
Despite the building works going on in the background, we manage to find some quiet space inside and outside a gorgeous cave, overlooking the town but turning our backs, as if cocooning some secret formula.
Here are two songs, two dances, two movements in their integrality. In them, you will see an exceptionally gentle magician creating the perfect sonic background for another master to elevate herself (and ourselves) to the divine. It’s one of my favorite recent recordings, where in the space of a single take (yeah, again), we all touched a moment of grace.
While leaving the cave, we learn that it was in that same spot that, centuries ago, Rumi was meeting his spiritual teacher, Shams. 750 years after Rumi’s death, some are still trying to keep the dialogue open. »
