  • The small, custom sawmill in Yoder, Oregon, run by David Yoder and his tireless helpder Lowell. The logs being sawed were from my sister's property outside of Oregon City after they were cut to make way for a new driveway.

The guy switching out the blade is a bonafide BAD ASS. He could probably beat up 750 snowflakes as once! Seriously, enjoyed the video. Thanks

The steam engine that ran the mill when it was built is still under there! As well as the saw-dust firebox for the boiler.

Sure can tell he has the blade sharp and the feed rate just right. Surprised that they do not have an outfeed table for the boards to drop on instead of dropping on the shaft.

Watch closer a lot of sawyers I think more so when they feed with their left hand on the stick seem to follow the log threw with their right hand for something to do with it.

Splendid operation. However, what is the twin-bladed circular saw known as in Oregon?

I have a cousin named David Yoder. Are you any kin to the Yoders in Lancaster County, PA?

Sir Sawyer, at the risk of offending...you need to put that right hand in your pocket while you’re milling. That’s a very dangerous habit. As a millwright myself (metals) we were drilled incessantly to keep that unoccupied hand OFF the input stock. You WILL someday lose concentration and that hand is toast. Plus, riding a hand on the log/cant serves no real purpose.

He's standing way to far away from the blade to even reach it. Look closer. He couldn't reach it if he tried. The A frame that holds up the top saw is way to wide for that. He would have to fall into the blade in order for that to happen, and even then the risk of that is minimal there because there isn't really anything to trip over. I've been there many times. It's not a danger. It's not a good habit, but it truly isn't a danger.

@@24681359David I had the same habit of letting my right hand ride with the log when I was sawing on these old mills,I think it was because it only had 1 dog holding the log in place,I see you have 2 on this mill not much chance of the log kicking out sideways.
