- This time, I will introduce Arab Street, Little India, and Chinatown, which are popular tourist spots in Singapore.
■Arab St
The nearest station to Arab Street is Bugis Station on the MRT East-West Line and Downtown Line. The Arab area, known locally as Kampong Glam, is located in the northeast part of Bugis Station. Also, if you walk northwest from Bugis Station or the Arab Street area, you will find Little India within walking distance. Arab Street is a historic area where Malay and Islamic cultures remain strong. Arab merchants immigrated to the area in the early 19th century and it developed into a commercial and religious center. The Sultan Mosque, the symbol of the area, features a golden dome and is visited by many tourists. Arab Street itself is lined with colorful shophouses selling carpets, spices, handmade crafts, Islamic fashion, and more. In recent years, the number of cafes, restaurants, and boutiques has increased, and it has become known as a trendy area. In addition, street art and galleries are scattered around the Arab Street area, where you can enjoy the fusion with contemporary art.
■Little India
Little India is located northeast of Orchard Road and north of City Hall. Arab Street is to the southeast and can be accessed on foot.
By train, it is convenient to get off at Little India Station or Farrer Park Station on the Northeast Line of the MRT. The area around these two stations is called Little India. The main street is Serangoon Road. If you walk east from Little India MRT Station, you will reach Serangoon Road. The most eye-catching thing along Serangoon Road is the brightly colored Hindu Sri Veerama Kaliamman Temple. Especially during Deepavali (the Hindu festival of lights), the whole town is illuminated with lights and many people visit. Little India is a vibrant district where colorful Indian culture lives on. It developed into a commercial and cultural center in the 19th century when immigrants from India gathered there. Along the main street, Serangoon Road, there are traditional Indian spice shops, Jewelry shops and sari specialty shops. In recent years, the number of cafes and restaurants that combine tradition and modernity has increased, making the area popular for its unique atmosphere.
■Chinatown
You can easily access the center of Chinatown by getting off at Chinatown Station on the MRT East-West Line and Downtown Line.
You can also walk to the center of Chinatown from nearby areas such as the city center and Clarke Quay, making it a great place to explore the area.
This area is strongly influenced by Chinese culture and history, and developed as a result of Chinese immigrants gathering in the 19th century. Many streets in the area are decorated with red lanterns, and the area is bustling with colorful decorations during the Lunar New Year. Buddhist and Hindu temples such as the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Sri Mariamman Temple coexist, giving a sense of religious diversity. At Chinatown Food Street, you can enjoy local dishes such as Hainanese chicken rice and dim sum, which are popular with tourists. In addition, traditional Chinese pharmacies and souvenir shops, as well as modern cafes and bars are scattered throughout the area, making it an attractive area where good old Chinese culture and modern times intersect. In recent years, the area has been praised as a conservation district, with many historical buildings and the beauty of the streetscape.
