I'm falling in love more and more with this company. I have emailed them recently looking for a mic mod. Turns out, Dave himself will reply to your emails. He was very honest with me, saying that it was not worth modding my mics, and that I'm better off selling them and buying new ones. He then offered me an exclusive discount code in case I wanted to buy from them. You bet I will now. And here he is, giving shoot outs to all these engineers and artists. What a sweet, honest, hard-working entrepreneur!

I like how he doesnt try and Hype it up to much like Mic-parts. They are pretty much the same capsules. and these are priced right .thats the best part

Well, I went for it. I purchased a pair of CM1084's with several capsules. The mics came and had very noticeable noise issues, and some capsules seemed to have issues, too, at least aesthetic, with glue residue visibly touching the membranes inside. I emailed Dave and he sent replacements right away without even waiting to receive the defective ones. That was a real boss move by him.
The replacements arrived a couple days ago. One of them didn't work, and I noticed a thread of mesh inside where the capsules attach to the body was making contact with the center pin. No big deal, I've seen that before with other mics. I removed the thread and it was good to go. Then, the moment of truth: headphones on, input monitoring on, both mics on, I'm hearing the mics pick up my computer fan and I'm happy, I go grab the mics, and the mics hum when I get my hands close (one a lot more than the other). I touch them, the hum disapears. Grab the mics, move them around the room, and they hum depending on where they are facing, too. I ruled out several cables and preamps, and tested numerous mics (I have almost 40 and have never had this problem, but worth the try), dynamic and condenser, transformer and no transformer, with the same one cable straight into the same input on my Quantum interface, wiggled them, moved them all around. Only these hum. I have no grounding problems, I have no noise problems in my home setup. I hate to, but have to return these for good. I can't afford the risk of bringing these to a session, either in a studio or one of the remote recordings that I mostly do, or at work at Trinity Church where we have tons of concerts that we live-steam, record, and make available on demand. I already missed using these at a big concert because the first ones were faulty.
All this being said, I have not lost a single bit of respect and appreciation for Dave, and at least one thing is always consistent with all comments ever about him and my own experience: he's kind, honest, and really knows his stuff. He is a very knowledgeable and smart man. He should clearly do everything in his power to prevent this from happening ever again, though. But I still like to think that I'm side by side with Roy Cleveland Sullivan, who got hit by lightning on 7 occasions; I got the two bad pairs of CM1084 from Advanced Audio. I'll give it a shot later in the future again, I truly wanted to love these mics, but right now it's not the time.

I think I should update you all. Dave made another very generous/boss move after all those problems I had with the mics, and sent me one of his FET LDC for all the trouble, the time, and shipping expenses I incurred: 2 shippings and 2 returns, from one end of Canada to the other end of the US...it got expensive! The mic is his take on the vintage 414, and it's a ridiculous mic! I happen to have a late 80's ULS 414 and I gotta say, AA's mic isn't as dark as the AKG (which I appreciate), and doesn't get as boomy on some vocals as the AKG (which I also appreciate!). All in all, I am still not ready to give the CM1084 mics another shot yet, but if I had a few hundreds in my pocket and were looking for another LDC, I would most likely go for an Advanced Audio!

@@emancia nice update , Detailed feedback really helps out ,
especially about this brand and thats what im actually deciding on ,is a 414 type mic thats not dark sounding , the u47 types take out to much high end shine, i want a U67 type capesule ,then put it in a Mic parts T84 circuit, but that 414 clone seems pretty nice too, i do not wanna settle for a blue mic.lol , i sent dave a message and i finally was gonna buy a AA67 capsule and he never sent me the invoice for paypal like he said .
not sure if i got time for the "pick the right working capsule game" either.
i got songs that need to be done , other producers waiting to see the results of these capsule and mic mods so if they are even a tiny bit of help, the truth will set us free ;) AMEN

I bought a CM 47ve and absolutely love it on vocals and really everything.
I put in a vintage preamp tube and think it sounds even better.

As always Chris, you have done a wonderful job at bringing these great products to our attention. As a Canadian, I would love nothing more than to support one of our own. Unfortunately, the currency exchange rate(s) really hits us hard!

      Canada doesnt have paypal?

    • @dylanj8676

@@hitmakermike5865 The problem is that at a good time $1 CAD is equivalent to $0.75 USD, and currently (as of the COVID19 outbreak) $400 USD is equivalent to $560 CAD or so, but PayPal and banks have conversion rates that aren't in the buyers favour. Like the Canadian dollar is worth 75 cents US usually (before the COVID19 outbreak it was roughly that), but you only get 73 cents US for your dollar when PayPal converts it.

A person in a recording group I’m part of on Facebook claims that he has the Advanced Audio CM47 mic and that it’s “toppy and has a high noise floor”. I’m assuming he meant that it has boosted upper/high frequencies and is slightly noisy. Is this accurate?

    • @demodeiowa
      @demodeiowa 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

It Depends.. did he get the CM47 or the CM47ve? They each have completely different capsules

Few years ago i bought a CM87 and i can say it really worths its money! Great in this price range!
Here is a shoot out i 've recorded with this and some more expensive and high end mics i now use for my job: th-cam.com/video/sBqspGZ_Dac/w-d-xo.html (Neumann TLM103 and TLM67, Vanguard V13 and Warm wa87). CM87 still keeps a position in my collection, it is a boutique item and absolutely love it!

That was back in 2017 and filmed with my phone (rear camera) so no way to monitor myself... I did 3 more conventions since them with a good camera, feel free to watch them ;-)
