I have many modern Fuji cameras with the late 24mp and 26mp sensors, but wanted to play with a earlier generation model to see if all the praise was worthy. I located a never been sold, still in the box X-E2s... same as the 2, but with all the firmware updates installed and a few external tweaks.
I really like this camera. I have 50 years in photography and shot tens of thousands of rolls of film, and the images that I get from the X-E2s look as close to film as anything that I've shot on digital. I only shoot jpegs with this camera. To that end I made several outings to get my parameters (highlight, shadow. Color, sharpness, etc...) set up and now I get consistent, repeatable results. This camera works great with the much maligned 18mm f/2, and the reduce resolution and older rendering make it very usable indeed. I found a good Mono formula (no Acros on this older camera) to use with the 18mm to boost the look from this lens and after seeing the results. I joke that it is my poor man's Leica Q. The 27mm is also perfect given the size.
So glad I bought this when I had the chance.
would you mind sharing your recipes, both colour and black and white?
@@alex.mathioudakis Hey Alex, I wish I could credit the person that I got this from, but as I recall it was in a comment section on a review of either the X-E2 or the 18mm f/2 (I spend too much time looking at this stuff). I know that the formula was written specifically for the 18mm used on the X-E2, taking the rendering of both and getting a result that maximizes the output.
As it was written:
Mono, yellow filter
Shadow +2
Highlight +2
Sharpness +2
Noise -2
Exposure compensation -2/3
The premise is that darkening the shadows and brightening the highlights and then underexpsing will give a high contrast rendering and the perception of greater sharpness. Reducing the noise reduction gives a film-like grain that adds to the vintage look.
FWIW, I don't do the minus 2/3 exposure compensation, but I utilize the WYSIWYG finder to adjust for each scene. Probably 65% of my shots have minus compensation, but usually about 1/3rd of a stop.
@@albertsmith9315 thanks very much for your extremely detailed answer. I know what you mean about YT videos, I do the same.
I have the x-e2 with some lenses, I'll definitely give it a try.
May I ask what you use for colour?
@@alex.mathioudakis Alex, for color I use Classic Chrome always on the X-E2s. On my newer models I go between Classic Chrome and Provia depending on the subject and light.
My X-E2s set up is:
Classic Chrome
Shadow +1
Highlight +1
Color +2
Sharpness 0
Noise reduction 0
I adjust the exposure compensation via the finder, with a high percentage of shots having minus compensation to prevent blown highlights.
These two formulas are input into my set up menu and I can toggle back and forth via the Q button and if the subject requires, I can tweak the settings for a few shots, then return to the original set up quickly.
@@albertsmith9315 thanks again. Will try this as well. Do you shift or in any way paly around with WB?
This is my camera, I literally use it with tape over it lol. I love it, it’s a blast. My next goals for Fuji is acquiring the 35mm 1.4!
The 35mm f1.4 is a really nice lens you wont regret it!
A couple of months ago I picked up 2 X-E2's and an X-M1 for the equivalent of 385 Euros. These older models seem to be unappreciated where I live, but dependent on your needs I think they offer great value for the output. 54 Euros for a mint X-M1, what's not to like.
That's a great deal!
That's crazy.
I have the E1, E2s, E3, H1 and just added the S20. I think the E2s is the sweet spot in the X-E line.
I like the size of this camera , so portable. A nice travel camera. Thanks for sharing dude. Well done video.
Thanks for watching!
Was surprised to know this was actually a JPEG camera. I spent the other day looking for an X-M1 here in the Philippines but found this gem instead. And just looking at the images it can capture just now, I'm so tempted to own one.
This is the camera that got me into Fujifilm. I still miss it! Great photo camera all round.
It really is!
Looks like a good quality camera. Very nice captured. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day!
Thanks, you too!
Would love to see a direct image comparison between the different x-trans sensors. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this camera model. I have been looking at adding a smaller Fuji camera to my bag. I see the prices of these older models have really gone up recently. Much of the time asking much more than they are worth. In time the price should come back down to reality.
A lot off people are trying to make a profit with older cameras and I think this trend will continue in time, I am looking for a X100 but the cheapest I found in good condition is 500$, its too much. Mpb have decent prices depending where you live.
Thx for sharing. Pretty good results out of that. Take care 🖖🏻
Thanks, you too!
Still love it! Still got it next to my XE3 and XT3
Nice.
Excellent post and thanks for the video of the fiesta!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Really enjoyed this, I am considering trying out Fujifilm with this one.
Go for it!
Thanks for sharing this interesting video my friend Andrei.
Have anice day, Greetings, Manu
Thank you my friend Manu!
Really like your video, make me want to get a X-E2 or 2s myself 😁
Thanks! 👍
I love the color! Is this from fuji recipe or lightroom preset?
thanks for the effort and sharing. i would welcome a look/comparison of the various X-Trans sensors. i have the XT-1 and the XT-2 and there are days I prefer on over the other. care to share your 3 fav X mount lenses? thumbs up!
Hey man! Great stuff. Just bought a used X-E2s and I am very happy with the results. Only thing that bothers mi is that it's not compatible with the Fuji X Raw Studio, which means I can only apply film simulations on my camera rather than on a bigger screen on my computer. Unless I am missing something?
Hey, I never used Fuji X Raw Studio with the X-E2 files, I will give it a try and come back with an answear.
Did you use (A) mode to capture the picture? Or you did fully manual mode?
For the photos in this video I used both.
Very nice camera !
It really is!
I dont think it is the most filmic camera from the "xe" lines...xe1 looks more filmic to me...but it is all very subjectiv anyways...
Everyone has a favourite filmic look in the Fujifilm X system. Some people love the X-Pro 2 look. As you said , it is subjective.
Nice job Andrei :-)
Thank you!
Very strange that nobody told this but, i really think your xe2 (or the lens) has some issues, i owned 2 of them and they never showed your lack of sharpness. Moreover i have an xe3 and a xh1 and i can tell you that xe2 has a very impressive image detail.
The photos in this video are sharp. Did you watch the video in 4K on a good display? The softness I am talking about in the video is not related to loss in detail it is like you have clarity on -1. I tested other X-E2 cameras with multiple lenses and they all look the same compared to other Fuji cameras. Again, its not loss in detail its something that makes the photos more film like.
@@AndreiDimaReviews perfect, i agree
Looking to buy my first ever camera. Can you make a video about what to look for when buying a used Fujifilm camera like this X-E2? What are the indicators that the camera is in a good condition or if it has been abused?
Good idea, thank you! The main things to look for are: bended corners and deep scratches on the body, scratches on the sensor from bad cleaning, the overall look of the camera.
If you ever get tired of photography you would be a great comedian 😂
Thank you!😅
Xe2 vs xm1? The tilting screen on the xm1 is really temping, and also the price...
I like the X-E2 more.
Now you collect the old fashioned gear
Yes!🙂
Hi Andrei. Just came across your videos and I love them! Especially your sense of humour 😁
Quick question, I'm going backpacking and would love to get my first camera to learn photography and journal my travels. Being newbie to photography I'm finding very overwhelming choosing a camera to buy. I know that I do want fuji. I was so happy to come across your page so thought will ask for any recommendations? I was leaning towards fuji xt30ii, but it's size with the lense looks a bit too big (from what I can see online, maybe it's different in real life). I was thinking about the x100f, but it doesn't have zoom, and as I don't know much about cameras, not sure if it's a good or bad thing. I just want something that is better than my phone, takes good photos - I might want to print some photos - and portable.
Would really love to hear from you, many thanks 🙏
Hello, I would get the X-S10 instead of the X-T30ii but a good option for travel is the X-E4 with the 23mm F2 lens or the 18-55mm.
@@AndreiDimaReviews thank you so much for getting back to me Andrei, really appreciate. What's your opinion on the lens that comes with xe4 - 27mm f2.8? Once again, thank you so much!!!
Its a good lens. I prefer the 23mm f2 but the 28mm f2.8 is more compact. Its a good first lens and with the X-E4 you can and more lenses later to your kit.
Can you review olympus e300 "ccd sensor"
Hi Andrei, where do you find them so cheap... I just switched to Fujifilm and my daughter just got interested in photography and I want to buy her a Fuji so we can share lenses... Thank you... Keep up the good work!
I got them from Wallapop a Spanish website just like OLX. But I got them during the pandemic and the prices were low. Thank you! Have a nice day.
what settings did you use for the SOOC images
What recipe did you use for these shots?
Hello, I used my presets pack to edit the photos in the video, I did not use a recipe.
Should I get the X-e2 or the X-m1? the price difference is not much and Im going use them as a small lightweight camera I can bring anywhere.
X-E2
Go get a sigma dp2 merrill! After endurance of the pain of using it, you get more than leica+Hasselblad+xpros+GR++++++++more.
I’ve heard a lot about Sigma’s Foveon sensor. Do you consider Sigma dp2 Merrill to have a superior sensor than X-Trans?
@@SlavaVeres the dp2m is a big challenge, and a big learning curve. The color to me is more organic, true, and less "digital", a step closer to "analog" than xe2 or xe1.
Interesting, I will try it out if I get the chance!
@@AndreiDimaReviewslet me know, I have a pristine condition one for sale. Not a single scratch
You sound like from Hawaii? I got the X-E2s wit XC 35mm lens for 375 bucks, but it is not easy to hold it. Are there any recommendations for a thumb grip? or what to do ??? As a newbie to Fuji and film I also wonder if there is any good video out there that gives some ideas for useful camera settings?
I am not from Hawaii. Here is a thumb rest: amzn.to/3EwPni9
@@AndreiDimaReviews Thanks for the answer with link!
For sale?
Nope
I really love your videos and suggestions about photography and gears but you all street photographers really need to stop photographing people making their faces visibile. It's a violation of privacy and if It happened to me i would not like It.
So you buy cameras because you’re bored? WTF.
