This video would've been called half an hour of Mae if the entire reloading process was included
I would watch it😂
"My very first pistol was a cap-and-ball Colt / shoot as fast as lightning but it loads a mite slow.
Loads a mite slow and I soon found out / it can get you into trouble but it can't get you out."
@@rdrrr 6 rounds plus a curtain of smoke to make your escape...lol Could be worse
@@rdrrr Take two.. they're small.. well, this one isn't, but you take my meaning.
@@rdrrr Awesome song, I think Highwaymen one is my favorite version
It was called a "Horse Pistol" for good reason; you needed a horse (pommel holster) to carry it, and it would put the enemy's horse down!
The follow-up made that clear. Dragoon is cavalry, who’s primary weapon is firearms.
Isn't that why Samuel Walker requested a larger firearm? The Paterson wasn't enough, he wanted something that would stop a person on horseback, by stopping the horse.
Read a piece about a S+W, with attachable shoulder stock, used Australian Light Horse, I believe.
@@jrstoelting60 grains would do that, Paterson also had its problems and this is def an improvement
P90 of 1860's...
According to Ian, the Walker was one of the most powerful handguns until the 357 mag was introduced.
1850s Desert Eagle, I suppose.
Nope, 45 Colt
Is that so? I was under the impression that 45 Colt ain't much better than 45 acp.
The 45 colt was also a black powder cartridge but didn't have the volume of the Walker. The Walker was the top dog till the .357 magnum.
@@dltenboer yep, that's what I was thinking.
I think the Walker is the pistol that the merry band of scalp hunters equip themselves with in the delightful children's novel Blood Meridian. It is used to great effect.
I know some people think they’re supposed to be a few different models, but I can’t picture Glanton with a brace of anything but these. Maybe the only judge sized revolver, too
One of my favorite books, from one of my (2) favorite authors!
"Delightful children's novel"
That there was a colt dragoon. Basically the same thing though as the dragoon is just an improved walker.
@@Sosaparksthe judge made those whitneyville colts look like pocket pistols
The Colt 1847 Walker is the official NATIONAL firearm of Texas. It's big, it's loud, and was incredibly powerful for its era.
The most powerful hand gun until the magnums came along in the ‘30s
That's nice but Texas is turning blue and nobody there is doing a thing.
Everything's bigger in Texas!
Probably in Arizona too...
🎵Big Iron...big iron...🎵
@@bertroost1675 Thank god it is
The Walker has an amazing sound when fired no recording does a good job of capturing the sound
For real, especially with 60gr max load it sounds even better because it's actually breaking the sound barrier at that point.
Enjoyable, as always. It's nice to see one of those things Mae-handled!
"Are you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?"
Robert Duvall carried one of these in Lonesome Dove and used it to teach a rude bartender some manners.
Yep. The actual gun was a very cool custom conversion to Colt .45.
What a behemoth of a gun!
I have one, it's like holding onto a half gallon jug of orange juice, sideways. 9" barrel practically makes it a carbine and 4.5 lbs is as heavy as some small rifles. With max powder load, it's .457 shots are super sonic. It's a real blast to shoot!

Mae with a Colt Walker...that grin at the end says it all, May. Been subscribed to you guys for years. Never change. 👍
55-60 grains of black powder is a good load for an SMLE in 303. Just learned this today.
Glad to see it not blowing up in Mae's hand, "which was a failing common to that model."
Let's how many people get that reference....
1:00
I was just thinking that! The poor man with the huge schlong, shot himself in the foot with his first round, because he panicked.
What was his name again? Corky?
And of course, it's from Unforgiven.
@@downunderrob Corky Corcoran didn't shoot himself in the foot, a - presumable - chainfire blew off his hand. We are told that English Bob wasn't going to wait around for him to grow a new one.
@@realhorrorshow8547 He did shoot himself in the foot. He panicked and went for the Walker so fast he shot his toe off. Then he misses English Bob "because he was still so damn drunk!" Then he took his time, lined up a good shot, and "BAM!! That old Walker Colt exploded in his hand! Which was a failing common to that model."
Let’s see how many people care
I'm no SIMP, but Mae is my favorite GunTuber.
Mae & historical firearms: 2 of my greatest loves 😍
That's just weird
Ah yes, Captain Walker, one of the few good things to come out of Maryland. The other perhaps being Admiral Buchanan.
You forgot the National Anthem
@@countryboy2123 Francis Scott Key didn't write Dixie.

Who did?
The embodiment of the term "big iron".
Look Out, Tom Chaney! 😮 Ok, not the revolver in True Grit, but hey .... It's still a hand held cannon! 😉
"By God, girl. That's a Colt's Dragoon." I think the line was.
@@downunderrob indeed it is 😉 Great film, Great cast, Great line.
You have no idea how much I love old revolvers.
The monster hand cannon; the fire-breathing behemoth!
Just the best.
"You ain't no bigger'n a corn nubbin, what you doin' with all that pistol?" My excuse is that while Rooster says Maddie Ross's gun is a Colt Dragoon, the 1969 film used a Walker, probably because it's even bigger.
Yeah, I'm gonna be needing one of them
Good one Mae, and never a flinch!
I know they are powerful enough to meet the deer hunting handgun energy requirement in my state and large enough to meet the black powder requirements. I would imagine a brace of walkers and a few spare cylinders would make someone that knew how to use them quite formidable, even now.
Thanks alot....now I want one.
It may look heavy, cumbersome and slow to reload, but it was revolutionary at its time of creation
Thats got to be the coolest peice of iron the Mae has shot so far. I always liked the Walker when I first set eyes on it from books and movies. Its a cool interesting story that it was the most powerful handgun in the world for centuries until the 44 magnum came out. Not sure where I heard that from but i heard it...
"Why you're no bigger'n a corn nubbin', what're you doin' with all that pistol?" --Rooster Cogburn
The big iron. Beast of a handgun, only surpassed in power once .357mag was released.
“Well you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?”…
“The Outlaw Josey Wales.”
A monster ! Good job as usual. 👍🙏😎
I've got one of these Walker Colt/Colt Walker reproductions from my Uncle who passed away. It is tricky for someone with a weak arm to hold steady, it's like holding out a half gallon milk jug, but that weight soaks up all the recoil nicely. With a 9" barrel, it's practically a carbine, and is accurate out to 50+ yards if you have a good strong arm and wrist and know how to use it's sights. With 60 grains of powder it's velocity is super sonic, I believe. While cycling, you want to point the muzzle up so the cap doesn't get stuck to the nipple and jam between the cylinder and frame a couple shots later. Also, can easily be converted to fire .45 long colt cartridges, but that does change it's legal classification..
A Walker reproduction from Herter's was my first handgun. Since I was too young to buy a centerfire back then, I had this delivered to my house.
great video, PS: LOVE it in the full video format 🙂 as lately, Mae has been reduced to a "shorts" segment, NOT good for us, we need her full screen!!
Had two of these monsters. They worked perfectly.
The only gunpowder firearm I would like to own one day. Love to the Channel
Loved it! Thanks.
Basically a 19th century Desert Eagle
Soon half a million subs!!
Every time I see a Colt Walker, that song lyric "she's a Bad mamma jamma" comes to mind...😂
I’m surprised there wasn’t a carbine of this handgun.
I’d like someone to create repros of these, and then I’d like someone to inevitably create a cartridge conversion for those repros like they have for other BP revolvers
I have a second gen colt that has never been fired (except for the few rounds shot at the factory).
Love it!
PDW before even casings were a thing... well, mostly. Before they were a widespread thing😅
Always remember to put some form of grease like Crisco to seal the chambers to prevent a chain fire! Love the Walker,
They do.
Wonderful video. Thank you
I called mine, "the pistol of the quivering arm"...it was one heavy beast when fully loaded.😁👍😁
If I understand correctly, there are conversion kits for the Colt Walker which installs a loading gate for metallic centerfire cartridges and replaces the loading lever with an ejector rod mounted to the side of the barrel.
Yup! It can easily be converted to fire .45 long Colt. However, one must remember that also changes the gun's legal status, until you convert it back to it's muzzleloader form. My uncle has a kit for his, sometimes he uses it, sometimes he doesn't, it takes about 5 minutes. The nice thing about converting it is, makes it easier to keep loaded at home for defense, not that it's an ideal home defense gun, but it would work in a pinch, and be absolutely terrifying to any intruder.
@@pex_the_unalivedrunk6785 What about the cartridge ejector rod? There are very few pictures I have seen online of Colt Walker conversions with the loading lever removed and replaced with a barrel-mounted ejector rod.
That is one beast of a handgun. It's not much shorter than some rifles.
🎤🎸 This Colt was made for walking and walking did it to, but if you got shot by it,you may lose a foot or two! 🎶🎵😁
Blood Meridian is the book that got me interested in cap&ball revolvers
They are a ton of fun

Pretty piece, thanks !
Good morning, Mae, that handgun is on my bucket list, it's time to track one down, Cheers, great video as always
I hope you mean a reproduction because it's unlikely you will ever afford an original. Lmao
@@herrcobra4144 and what do you think he meant?
@alanrogs3990 It's the internet so there's no way to know unless he specified. LoL
I got one love it
It's a prudent safety measure to grease over the chambers on a cap & ball revolver, it prevents "chainfire" where multiple chambers will go off at once.
In the longer video they do.
Now with a optional stock !
" my, that's a big one " ~ Dirty Harry
I’ve taken deer at around 20 yards with my Walker, and they never go far. My only real gripe is the rear sight!
Wow
That gun was Josie Wells in Outlaw, Clint Eastwood❤👍🍺
The Colt Walker has a weakness- the original pistols could not handle the powder charge when loaded to the max and were known to explode in your hand
That usually came from idiots loading their conical bullets backwards.
True, but this is most likely an Italian reproduction.
@@donovanchilton5817 the gun shown in the video is an Italian manufactured reproduction, but old or new, it's best not to load to the max to prevent the gun from blowing your hand apart.
@@brianlubeck4184 A new one is not going to blow up from a full powder charge. The metallurgy is far greater than the original.
@@herrcobra4144 true, but why take the chance?
Can hold 55gr powder and a .445 cal rounf ball. A 45-70 carbine round has 55gr powder charge for comparison.
Muito linda assim como os demais apetrechos.
Saint of Killers' legendary revolver
yeah, i'd say "authoritative" is a good way to put it. what a gun!
Hilarious story; I was at a reenactment participating, and there was a member of the artillery armed with a Walker, during a battle someone shared the guy shot his pistol after the guns fired their shots. The guy was confused why there was more cannons than there was! XD Took him a while before he saw the guy and his pistol then pointed at him in understanding!
You got that big boy the horse killer
But you hate to be on the business end of it. Another great video Ms Mae. Thank you
To the town of Ayga Fria rode a stranger one fine day ...
We are going to need a bigger Mae.
Enormous respect for a lady who can shoot a Walker. Tougher and more capable than most men. In Australia we have Queensland country girls, hard workers and so tough my old man reckoned they could knit with fencing wire.
Texas red: *Sweats profusely*
What modification did you do to prevent the loading lever from dropping?
Yes I used to carry them on the horse horses
I will always think of Josey Wales whenever I see a Walker and I want two of them.
i always called this the big iron gun
I own the Uberti Whitneyville model with the same grips as the Walker, but only a 7.5" barrel. I wish someone would make an attachable buttstock for both models, since they are so heavy as a lone revolver.
As per my recent comment, S+W made one for one its guns. Might it fit ?
With the 9 inch barrel, it's practically a carbine...it would be nice to have a butt stock, since a front grip would be a bad idea because it's a revolver and hands in front of cylinder is a no-no. Holding it out with 1 hand is literally like holding a half gallon of milk sideways.
The Walker Colt was developed for early Texas Rangers so they could fight Comaneci Indians on horseback by riding right in among the Natives to shoot at close quarters. The early ones sometimes exploded because the metallurgy wasn't up to the pressures of 60+ grains of black powder.
The firearm of choice for the Glanton Gang
1850s Desert Eagle.
A great minute. Did you think about your fingers while firing that giant?
Big enough to use as a club in melee combat
Out of the manufacturers producing reproductions of these, what would you all say to be the best quality?
Uberti
Mae's got the big iron on her hip.
The Hand Cannon
Not hard to believe she would fare well in a serious duel, though I believe that negotiation would be preferable, by far.

I accidentally read the title as Colt "Wanker" 💀💀
Question, is the walker larger than the dragoon?
yes
@@araknidude thanks I was thinking that. I was at a gun show a while ago and saw an original Dragoon which was cool but I thought the Walker and dragoon were the same thing, so when I saw this I was like what
If memory serves the Dragoon was the follow up to the Walker production run and they took advantage of lessons learned to scale it down a bit to be more manageable to hold and fire. It wasn't a huge amount though. The Walker was 2.0 kilos (rough 4.4 pounds) while the Dragoon was 1.9 kilos (4.25 pounds). Mainly they shortened the cylinder on the Dragoon so you couldn't overload with powder as easily as with the Walker.
The Walker could hold 70 grains of black powder but that was found to be dangerous due to cylinder rupture so the standard load and cylinder length was scaled back in the later Dragoons.
Imagine the increase in firepower a pair of those + a couple preloaded cylinders gave you in the 1840s
I can't tell which totally impractical monster revolver is cooler: this or the Montenegrin Gasser!
Largest hand gun ever adopted by any military in world history.
