  • Highlights of the First Division match between Brighton & Hove Albion and Liverpool at the Goldstone Ground in October 1981. Apologies for the squashed picture format - I recorded it in 4:3 rather than 16:9 by accident.

Brighton had a really good side back then, made it difficult for any team on their home ground. Showed great resilience to come back and get a draw.6>1 Amen.

Only ever went to the goldstone ground once, fa cup replay in 91, we got there in the afternoon and it was a night kick off, so we headed for the beach and we were all fascinated cos its a pebble beach, so they we were under the pier trying to find flat stones to skim them across the water, brighton was crap in the winter 😮

Interesting to see Gordon Smith, the man who broke my heart in the 83 cup final, clean through on Gary Bailey to beat Man U, shot straight at him.

Ray Kennedy soon moved to Swansea to join Colin Irwin and Max Thompson (managed by Toshack) and Jimmy Case moved to Brighton and wears #7 here with Shanks at #2:-).
Ex Red Jimmy Melia would manage Brighton the following season. His Toshack style gladiatorial style run to the Kop after their FA Cup win not greeted with the same response.

12:04 Souness ambling back. Not remotely interested in challenging Case.

Thanks for your comment. There was a dispute between the clubs and the TV companies in the first half of the 1985/86 season, so unfortunately there isn't footage of many games. As far as I know, no TV cameras were at that Arsenal game.

@@DaveWallerLFC Not seen any but surprised if there was no news clip with Mark Austin's dulcet tones. First home game after Heysel. They had a choir on the pitch before the game singing Abide With Me and the PA system was not relaying it so the Kop started singing the usual pre match YNWA. We were all surprised picking up the papers next day as we were accused of disrupting the ceremony. We still get that thrown at us after all these years.

I thought that after posting the reply, but I've never seen any footage, and if they weren't allowed to record the game itself maybe it wasn't worth the effort.

We used to give Steve Foster some stick when he played for Luton at Anfield…

A totally different world to today - but to give an example of how complacent, blase and bored some fans were - singing was frowned upon for most games (what are ye getting yourself worked up for?), so talking to your mates with your back to the game was 'in' , staying in the bar at Highbury and missing the game was becoming popular - and in this game (pretty sure it was this one) - a sizeable contingent of Liverpool fans left this game early as the weather was awful and cold - to explore the town. A few would even move there to live.

That's still annoying 40+ years later. Still we won the league anyway!
