About 20 years ago we stopped off in Dalhart on the way to Angel Fire NM. It looks so flat people don’t realize how much density altitude you can encounter out there in the summer. But we felt it - like you did. Fortunately, we packed ultra-light to get four people in and out of Angel Fire in a normally aspirated Bellanca Viking with no O2. On the way out we had to climb while circling in a box canyon above Eagle Nest Lake (where the surface is 8,200’ MSL) to get 100 feet above the trees before turning East and flying back to Oklahoma. We used up a lot of luck that day to gain some experience.
You folks definitely made the right choice of airfields in ALBQ. You couldn't get the same hospitality at the International one plus you have military traffic from Kirkland The pattern is insane,( dying turbulence flying over Sandias in bound), and especially take off, you head directly AT the mountains and have to bank hard right. No mistakes or failures. The commercial traffic will run over you being a Southwest Airline hub, and rental cars are the pits located off airport. Altimeter readings are a hoot too. Just found your channel, great flying. Oh, if you like the turbulence do a stop and go in Lubbock Texas :-)
If you haven’t gone there is a tribute area in Winslow with statues and an old Ford truck. Nice place. You’ll get a laugh out of the building and store front. Safe travels.
The old "leave behind". That's the oldest trick in the book. Beware gentlemen, when your girl leaves behind clothes/shoes, get ready to get out your credit cards. This tactic is most effectively used with blame resulting in guilt. Well played Jaime. Enjoy your shopping trip in LA. Ha ha. You guys are great! Thank you for sharing.
I watched this video with a bit of amusement. Having learned to fly in 1965 at KPRC with a field elevation of 5000 ft, the density altitude was just another day of flying. The bumps and unable to hold within 500 feet of altitude in the middle of summer, well that was normal. I have never flown a plane at the lower midwest elevations, though I was raised in Southern Indiana, just a half mile from the old Haps airport in Jeffersonville. If you didn't go to Page, Az. you missed a great opportunity. Have flown out of KPGE (?) and KGCN, and a number of trips over the Grand Canyon, beautiful flights/scenery.
Hey, Kevin, the bad odor y’all were smelling in Dalhart, Tx, is cow poop. There are cattle feeder lots all over Dalhart, with hundreds of head of cattle in those lots. So, regardless of where you are in Dalhart, you’re gonna smell cow poop, because of the West Texas winds! However, after a while, you get used to it. I’ve driven thru Dalhart many times, in my RV, on my way to Denver, Colorado. But, then again, that’s Texas for ya!! Enjoyed the video. Be safe on your journeys, and keep the videos coming. As always, happy Flying, and safe landings!!
Albuquerque from Chicago in a VW Bus in 1976 passing through a lot including Salt Lake City, Wyoming, Badlands and more. We found the best sopapillas on earth at a local Mexican Food Buffet. Our 7 month old first child in the back of the Bus singing bah, bah, bah and learning to stand while swaying down the highways. Love your videos !!! Keep 'em coming. More about getting back into Algonquin on fumes at 3am in the morning later on.
I just love flying along with you both but not having to endure the turbulence of being shaken and not stirred to get there. It's lovely that you invite us along to see some of the local sites after landing, thank you both! The engines were struggling with their breathing alright. Such a high density altitude sure sucks the power from them. I bet there's a lot more TC airplanes around NM and other desert states! Best wishes to you both from the cold South Pacific Islands of NZL, David
Can't believe you did this tour without a stop in Las Vegas. Williams, AZ is a great stop for Grand Canyon with the Grand Canyon Railway hotel and train ride. Maybe next time.
I Used to live in Kansas City, we went to Phoenix for my Son's Wedding, and On the way back, we stopped at this little Store in Winslow, and that song came to mind, because my Boss would always sing that at our Hardware Store. Not many Girls in Winslow! Now back Living in Retirement in Mesa Arizona. Been to that Hampton INN in ABQ
I haven't been in the channel in awhile, the first couple high DA landings and takeoffs in this series were not a surprise lol (I'm a single engine pilot out of Phoenix). Your ground speed is a lot higher and control response is sluggish when you are high and hot. Great vids on this trip! Keep up the great work!
Been following for a long time, glad you made a stop at Double Eagle airport and got a little taste of ABQ just down the street from mi casa. Hope you guys can make it out the first week in October to checkout ABQ International Balloon Fiesta. You won't regret it. Dinner will be on me. Continued safe travels as you continue west. You had your mixtures set just about exactly how we had our 310 C. Welcome to high altitude flying. Love you guys. All the best in your future. (Kevin from Wyoming)

Been to Winslow. Very cool downtown with a Harvey Hotel and waaay too few airplanes at their historical airport. Been to Page, they love transients and cater to same, it’s hot in summer with good Mexican food, several hotels, some amazing views.
I live in this area… just have to fly higher. Usually 11,000 to 15,000 is smoother. Also ABQ always keeps you high then clears you to land 5 miles from the airport and 4000ft above it. You learn that when you come over the mountains to already be slowed down, have flaps down, and gear down so you can make a fast decent.
Used to fly to SKS Taos in a '80 310R in the mid 80s before the 2nd runway was added..7,000 feet msl and a 5000 foot runway on a hot day was interesting
Those mountains east of Albuquerque are almost always turbulent. I used to drive a semi truck out there a lot and got lots of wind sheer affects near the top on I-40
I used to stop at the international airport there all the time when I was flying in the military. I really enjoyed Sadie's restaurant. Their salsa is amazing, and they sell it there. I bought a few jars of it.
Just did Page in a Piper Lance. 7AM, 7000 foot density altitude. Climbout was extraordinarily anemic, but per the book. Naturally aspirated and high density altitude can be eye opening, especially if you're at or close to sea level a lot of the time.
When my wife and I fly cross countries, we fly two legs, each one between 2:45 and 3:15 and call it a day anymore. I'm from TX; love the density altitude.
Darn!! You are the 2nd TH-camrs I like that posted an unscheduled stop in Albuquerque in the last month. Would loved to have taken you guys out to dinner. Probably would have told you to watch out for the red light runners here too. It's almost like a hobby among Abq drivers.
@@rtazz17 Really? I had seen a previous comment about a divorce but wasn't able to find any information about it. They seem like a great couple. Sad to hear.
Ahh, mountain wave. Used to get some serious mountain wave in West Virginia (eastern area , sort of). We were cruising, alt hold on the autopilot, I think at 175 knots. The updrafts really made the AP put the nose way down to maintain altitude. Then we'd get a downdraft, heavy nose up. Then updraft. The indicates airspeed was all over the place
Ya, it came out in early 1972. A lot of the younger generation never heard of The Eagles until Joe Walsh came on board and they did Hotel California. Their best album was Desperado.
Do you lean the mixtures for best power before a high density altitude takeoff? I operated out of RMMA (BJC) and points west for 30 years and it was sop. And, Jamie would look great with some turquoise and silver jewelry!

Bumps.... yeah... welcome to the mountains and the desert!
When my wife and I fly cross countries, we fly two legs, each one between 2:45 and 3:15 and call it a day anymore. I'm from TX; love the density altitude.
I love the tail camera view going through the clouds. Have a great trip.
Albuquerque is one of our favorite destinations! Happy you got to experience New Mexico!
Darn!! You are the 2nd TH-camrs I like that posted an unscheduled stop in Albuquerque in the last month. Would loved to have taken you guys out to dinner. Probably would have told you to watch out for the red light runners here too. It's almost like a hobby among Abq drivers.
This was last year. They are now divorced
@@rtazz17 Really? I had seen a previous comment about a divorce but wasn't able to find any information about it. They seem like a great couple. Sad to hear.
I actually stood on a corner in Winslow az and a girl in a flatbed ford big truck actually did slow down it was very cool.
Been missing Jaime’s singing! Gotta love Winslow
I've driven out that way many times but never seen it from the air that would be fun to do , thanks for the ride 👍 can't wait to see more 😊
Thanks for sharing your journey.
Jeez, I thought everyone knew the lyrics to Eagles tunes. Thanks, folks.
Ya, it came out in early 1972. A lot of the younger generation never heard of The Eagles until Joe Walsh came on board and they did Hotel California. Their best album was Desperado.
Thanks for singing Miss Jaime.
Thanks for sharing your adventures NC USA 🇺🇸
Tks.guys..Great video!..Entertaining and informative.
Several years ago I was flying to Jeffco and Denver approach left me hanging, had to call them to switch to jeffco tower 2 miles out.
We always land at Dalhart when we go out west. Nice people. Years ago they had a diner car there until they built the new FBO.
I always enjoy your video adventures. Keep'em coming.
Ahhh, this vid popped up what a pleasant surprise, needed to get my mind back on flying instead of putting around the lake in the boat
Do you lean the mixtures for best power before a high density altitude takeoff? I operated out of RMMA (BJC) and points west for 30 years and it was sop. And, Jamie would look great with some turquoise and silver jewelry!
Hello from Minnesota!! Love your videos, hope you have a few more in the Q! I want to do this same trip in our 182!
You could tell the air density altitude was having an affect on your takeoff. Seemed a little sluggish.
affect is a verb. effect is a noun.
@@keemez Thank you very much for correcting me. I was thinking air density altitude affect when I was posting this. I noticed the mistake after I posted it but did not think it was worth editing . I stand corrected since it obviously distracted you or perhaps others who read it from my true intent. Lesson learned.
Mountain flying in the afternoon is like putting yourself in a washer machine. Smart move to play it safe!
Lov your videos Kevin. I was flying into ORD a few weeks ago and was wondering what sector you work. Darren
Visiting my hometown hope you enjoyed your visit thanks for the great videos.
Hi Kevin & Jamie. I just found your channel and love this video. Very well done. You two are an interesting couple. Hope to see many more videos out west. Thanks for sharing. Just realized I spelled her name wrong….Jaime, sorry.
Gotta love that density altitude! Looks like a great trip so far.
This is turning out to be a really cool adventure! Thanks for bringing us along with you guys and blessings to you and your family.
Your love for each other is beautiful to see.
Happy well deserved vacation out west!
Alberquerque is a nice City and surely you saw the AF Base
Indeed. ABQ’s Sunport shares runways with Kirtland Air Force Base.
I am in Kingman. Might have been a good idea to land there and then rent a car and take the 2 hour drive to the canyon. Nice and quiet here. I have been there several times and it is a piece of cake from here. Hotels are pretty decent also. I live about 5 miles from the airport and could have helped you. I was there about two weeks ago and everything was open.
