Keith Richards Discusses the Final Days of Charlie Watts

  • Keith Richards remembers his band mate and lifelong friend: Charlie Watts. Keith discusses one of his last conversations with Charlie regarding going on tour without him and his struggle with cancer.
The Rolling Stones are a family. There is a need to carry on even after key members pass away and Charlie made it clear that he wanted the band to continue touring without him.
Special thanks to Keith Richards, CBS Sunday News and Lee Flier… • Time Waits For No One ...

After fifty plus years, it must have been a shock to look back and to miss that persona and steady beat that Watts provided for so long.
He was the rock they built the foundation on. The drummer in a rock band is the backbone of the music and the band. The songs depend on the steady beat of the drums for the most part. Except for the slower Ballads.
So Watts was essential to the music and to the groove!
Without the drummer, there is no groove!
    RIP Charlie Watts

This is exactly how I feel. I wish them all the best, and do not begrudge them at all for carrying on. For their crew, their associates, and themselves. I have seen them live 10 times, including both Chicago shows of 2019 to kick off that tour, delayed after Mick;s surgery and those became the new opening shows of the tour. But personally I wouldn't buy a ticket in the future because it is not worth their asking price when Charlie is not there. It really is not the Stones any longer. Charlie was much much less replaceable than Wyman.

I saw the Stones with Steve Jordan. He has had an amazing career. Back to Saturday Night Live in the late 1970s, where the Stones first met Jordan. He goes through the Dave Letterman show, being the drummer on the Chuck Berry 60th birthday show, being Keith's solo drummer, and various collaborations with Eric Clapton and others. He is just brilliant. We sing his praises and also acknowledge the meaning of Charlie Watts to all those great records, and go back and listen and watch Stones concerts. Charlie does the job of a great drummer. The literal backbone and backbeat of the band. The Stones for 60 years without Charlie is unimaginable. Had they not chosen Steve Jordan as drummer, it would also be unimaginable.

I think you meant Steve Jordan. Keith felt ten-twenty years ago, that he could not envision the Stones without Watts. I guess after working with Jordan for over thirty years on various projects, including the Winos, he changed his mind. As good as Jordan is, when I heard them with Jordan on the drums, it just doesn't sound the same. Charlie, along with Keith, were the backbone of the bands sound. The people they cannot replace are Mick and Keith. I used to think that Charlie as also on that list.

MY FAVORITE MEMORY OF CHARLIE IS WHEN THE STONES PLAYED CLEVELAND. MICK INTRODUCED THE BAND AND EVERYONE IN THE PLACE GAVE A NICE ROUND OF APPLAUSE BUT WHEN MICK SAID "MR. CHARLIE WATTS ON DRUMS" THE APPLAUSE WAS ABSOLUTELY BONKERS. CHARLIE WHO WE ALL KNOW IS USUALLY STONE FACED AND UNEMOTIONAL COULDN'T HOLD BACK THE BIGGEST SMILE I'VE EVER SEEN AND AT THE SAME TIME LOOKED QUITE BEWILDERED. YOU COULD TELL IT MADE HIS DAY.

The Stones sound will never be the same without Mr. Watts. He is irreplaceable. The "No Filter" concert in Prague in 2018 with my grandson and Tomoko is the last one. Too bad. If they come to Japan (very unlikely), I may reconsider. I'll bring the members of "The Lady Shelters" (a Japanese rock-'n'-roll band) along.

Anytime you saw pictures of Charlie and Keith it was obvious how much Keith cared for Charlie. Same with Bobby Keys. Sure that Charlie felt the same but was more reserved. But you knew that Charlie enjoyed the attention from Keith. Being that close for all those years certainly was a loss to Keith and the others in his life as well. Keith strikes me as the type that loves and is loyal to people is his life

@@DJGerryfromStarlightMusic There've been about 15 genres of music that have taken form since The Stones started out. The last thing I heard from them with a "new music" claim attached to it was something about a ghost town, a total ripoff of The Specials 80's hit, "Ghost Town". Mick and Keith kicked their muse to the curb some 45 years ago in favor of exchanging golden oldies for arenas full of cash. I don't expect much in terms of a reconciliation, do you?
