Omodeo Lake - by InSardinia

Lake Omodeo is the largest artificial lake in Sardinia. It is located in the province of Oristano and is formed by the damming of the river Tirso through the dam of Santa Chiara first and the most recent dam Eleonora d'Arborea, located in the territory of Ula Tirso and Busachi. The water basin takes its name from the engineer, Angelo Omodeo, who oversaw the design of the Santa Chiara dam, near Ula Tirso, which was inaugurated on April 28, 1924, originating the largest artificial lake in Europe, which had a capacity maximum of 403 million cubic meters of water.
More than 22 km long, the basin was built to regulate the floods of the river, to produce electricity and to irrigate the Campidano di Oristano plain. The creation of the artificial basin also led to the submergence of some archaeological sites such as nuraghi, tombs of giants, and the prenuragic settlement of Serra Linta and the small village of Zuri, which was rebuilt on a hill not far from the lake. The ancient church of the village, present in my video, dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle, was dismantled brick by brick and rebuilt in its current position.
On 2 February 1941 the dam was attacked by torpedoes from some planes taken off the British aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal.
In 1997 the new dam was inaugurated, named after Eleonora d'Arborea. The barrier is 100 meters high and 582 meters long. The total volume of the reservoir amounts to 792 million cubic meters of water, covering an area of ​​29.370 km².
