There is nobody in South Korea or anywhere else in the world who is as good a singer as Sohyang. These TV show competitions tend to just be popularity contests with the audience and not actual measures of talent. If you have songs on the pop charts you will be more well known, and if you don't, like Sohyang because she doesn't even try to put anything in the charts, you are not likely to do as well. But there was no one on that TV show who could hold a candle to Sohyang ten years ago, and certainly not now. It was only because of the TV audience with tin ears voting that Sohyang didn't win. 🤔
I think she sang this song better than anyone I've ever heard cover it. Thanks for posting this given the original problems. I can imagine when she was crafting her trade there were those that just didn't know what they were hearing -- thus she didn't 'win' this particular show. She did shine here, though, and has since shown much of the world that she sits with all the great singers. What makes it beautiful is that being considered 'great' isn't her focal point, but to bring joy to music listeners. She continues to do that today. I am constantly amazed at how she can sing all types of music at a superb level. She obviously has incredible talent, but she works incessantly at her profession. I saw in an interview where she sings a song 100 times before she does a performance. This does not mean she isn't given to do a little improvisation here and there, because I feel she does do that, maybe because she knows the arrangement so well by the time she is on stage. BTW, Tim's suggestion (in comments) to react to Lena Park is an excellent one, as she is a Korean-American singer who is a star is South Korea (if you haven't reacted to her before). Her version of 'Chandelier' sung in Italy in another season of Begin Again is amazing! She has many, many great songs. She is soulful, with R&B vibes. She sings in Korean and English as well. Thanks again for both the 'live live' version of this and today's.
Sohyang is a gospel singer and not many people know her during that time.

Queen sohyang
To highlight what they talked about... This was the semi-final stage. The elf dressed guy was asking her why she chose this song, a carol, when other contestants were sharpening their weapons (literally "knife" - Korean Expression for waiting for a chance to revenge). She answered, for 15 years, she had been singing this song and sharpening her knife. The elf guy replied, you are sharpening your knife by singing O Holy Night?!? She said most famous singers sang this song. She especially liked Mariah Carey's version and practiced as she grew up. She sang this song in front of Seth Riggs, the vocal coach of Michael Jackson, and she got many complements from him. She wanted to make the audience happy hearing this song in this Christmas season. She sang "My dear Savior" instead of "Our" to show her personal faith in Jesus Christ. The professional commentators thought she had the best performance. However, she got less votes than the first performer. The first performer was the most known singer among the 3 semi finalists and was expected to win the whole thing from the beginning. I believe she should have been eliminated here, but she moved onto final and lost and Sohyang was eliminated here. I believe she should have gotten more votes for this song, but considering that she sang a religious song, she did well and less than 10 votes difference to the expected to win singer. Btw, 500 live audiences and 500 audience via monitors vote if they like the performance. The second song Sohyang sang for this competition was a really famous song and Lena Park, the star singer from I Am a Singer 1, had sung the same song in the season 1. Sohyang tried to show a different stage unlike her previous stages. I believe she did a little too much to show her different side and it back fired her. I can't really remember, but I think it was a rock style. Perhaps "Mona Lisa" from Masked Singer might have been much better. Having said that... from the beginning of the season 2, Sohyang was good, but she tried to show high notes a little too much and some people thought she just screamed too much. Then, she got used to being on the stage and in a few years, she really matured. Perhaps "Mona Lisa" at this stage might not have been as good as Masked Singer. "I Have Nothing" from I Am a Singer 2, her first performance probably on live TV was good and ranked #1, but you could hear that she tried too hard and still not used to the stage as a total unknown singer, but 3 years later, she sang a masterpiece (many dare to say better than Whitney) in I Am a Singer Legend stage. Perhaps her being new to big stages or just rigorous stage schedule (had to arrage and practice 2-3 songs every month) and trying to show her high notes too much (because you never know when your last stage will be) made some of her performances a little shaky, but a few years later with some experience and time to prepare, she produced legendary masterpiece performances one after another. I think her performance of "Lean on Me" on Immortal Songs 2 in front of Michael Bolton and hearing his comment of "Virtuoso" was the turning point of her career. Until this stage, people debated who was better singer between Lena Park and Sohyang and Sohyang had a great high notes, but still people tend to like Lena Park more for her voice, but Lena Park's face expression during Sohyang's "Lean on Me" you could tell that Lena just admitted that Sohyang won that day. When you get a chance, react to Lena Park as well. Thank you for your Sohyang reactions.
