I live in CM. I usually avoid this sort of video but Karl is a lovely guy and a neat storyteller. Most importantly, he reminisces about Thailand in the 80s without putting down Thailand today which - let’s face it - is all we’ve got. Still a great place with wonderful people.
Having travelled all over the world as a young back packer for several years I came to the conclusion that the thing that sets Thailand apart is the ability to mix with the locals . Its possible elsewhere but not like it is in Thailand .
Yes, Thai culture is very unique, I can have the most incredible times here and some very frustrating times too but it's never boring. And the locals are indeed very sociable, sometimes too much for me lol.
Only just stumbled onto this channel and so enjoying the last 3 videos as my own first trip was early 90 at about the same age (I am 56 now). Brings back so much memories of amazing times and the truly wonderful girls I met back then. Its hard to explain unless you experienced it, but my god I am glad I did.

Wonderful reminiscents Karl! Brings back memories from my second trip to Thailand in 1981. Really enjoying this series of your travels. Those photos you took are fabulous. It's like they've been waiting all these years for the technology to catch up with their quality. Nowadays we can see on a computer or big screen tv. Nice story about the girl recognising you. Great memories I was there in 1986 Bkk then night train to Surat Thani then ferry to koh samui, then went to the states for 24 years and returned to Thailand for two years four year back, but I also remember the one and only club disco on koh samui 😂 Great photos you have, I did the same tripod etc but I had an Olympus O.M.1. All the best look forward to the next one.
Cheers Vin, what a journey that is by train and bus and ferry eh? But to quote from ‘The Beach’…”Trust me, it’s a bargain!”. You’re one of only a few I know who remember Flamingo House. Do you still have your pictures from 86?
@@karlsthailand I do Karl But in storage in the U.K. not there just now but when Im back I will dig them out, You got some Great colouring on your old photos, Did you use a filter? Yep The flamingo house great memories, I was in a beach bungalow on Lamai beach forgot the name but she the lady also had a restaurant in the middle, she used to give everyone that thia stick 😂 and no one was bothered to move so she had your custom most evenings eating and drinking then pay your bill when you left ha. Look forward to the next one.
Great memories Vin. Samui was another World back then and we were lucky to experience it
@@karlsthailand We was Karl very lucky to experience them times, I stayed at the old famous or infamous hotel Miami when I first went to Bkk I believe it was in its time a hang out for U.S. Troops on leave from Vietnam, I don’t know if its still open? I used to go to Cheap Charlies open air bar Famous with ex pats and the like, went back after 30 odd years and was still open I think its. Closed now, Did you ever go? Im probably the same age as you so I can relate to your experiences at that young age in that magical place Thailand. All the best look forward to your next Video cheers.
Thank you for the story friend 🙏
My pleasure. Hope you enjoy the whole series of those videos. Thank you
So many happy photos. Love it !
Thanks Your Dadsvan, glad you’re enjoying the videos. Thanks for the positive comment
Handsome man Karl :)
Well. Thank you
Amazing memories Karl……I too lost my traveller’s cheques in ‘99 on Samui, found myself at the police station eating fried banana with the cops…happy days. Also met my kids mum in the Bauhaus, Lamai 2001.
That’s great Danny. I wonder if Flamingo House/Bauhaus is still there in Lamai?
@@karlsthailand I’ve heard it’s gone now….end of an era. The foam parties were good fun.
Hi Karl, I'm on holiday in chiang mai, I had the han lae in jok somphet, did the monks trail to doi suthep and back, and next will be the floating pagodas. I greatly enjoyed, thank you 👍👍
That’s great Gerard. Btw you owe me a few beers 😉😂
Anytime, it would be a pleasure😀
This episode was so much fun to watch! The pre “Disney” commonality of travel were indeed legendary times to travel in Thailand.
Thanks Scott, I look back on those times fondly and I do think I realised they were special at the time, that’s probably why I took all the pictures
Great series this about the old times, well done Karl
Thanks James, glad you’re enjoying them
That was very watchable. Gave it a like. Good work. You have much sharper memories of those years than I do. Bad lifestyle choices on my part.
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, my memory has always been good when it comes to the chronology of things happening but having the pictures to remind me is a big help. Cheers
Karl you brought tears to my eyes mate.
People love those videos with my old pictures…..wish I had taken even more lol. Cheers
@@karlsthailand Don't mourn that time that is lost to us, let's be grateful we got to do it.
Superb Karl. I met you once in Quicky Bar probably around ten years ago. That place used to be great. It looks like you’re having a great time.
Thanks. I was known to hang out at that establishment lol. Still trying to rack up the adventures.
Great pics and memories Karl. My first few trips to Thailand in the 90s are all a bit of a blur 🤣will never beat that buzz coming into land in DM knowing you’d be soon be in sukhumvit bars !
Yes, it was quite a buzz wasn’t it?. Thanks for the comment
Great video and storytelling about your life many years ago
Thanks Jeff, it’s great to have the pictures and memories to share
Great video mate 👍
Thanks Paul, more to come
Nice one Karl. 👍
Thanks
Really enjoying this series of your travels. Those photos you took are fabulous. It's like they've been waiting all these years for the technology to catch up with their quality. Nowadays we can see on a computer or big screen tv. Nice story about the girl recognising you. Its often said people remember how a person treated them and made them feel more than what they said to them. I'm sure you've done that everywhere you've been on your travels Karl. Looking forward to the next video.
Thanks Popicorn, yes taking slides seemed like an awkward thing to do at the time but I’m so glad I did now as the quality is better. It was a great coincidence meeting Darin again
This is a great collection of Thailand stories and photos. 👍
People do seem to enjoy them, thanks again
More great memories Karl 👍
Bet those Hmong children served me coffee as 30 odd year olds now when I was up at Doi Pui in April! Amazing memories, keep em coming 🙏🏻👍
Yes, you’re probably right lol. Family businesses
This is interesting, me and my mate went in December 86. I remember all the food then was loaded with Chilli which we could not handle, apart from the fried rice. This was the only thing we ended up eating literally everyday, always had a fried egg on top 😀
Cheers. Oh yeah, Thai food in it’s natural environment can be a very spicy shock to the system.
fantastic Karl it would be great to see pics from the island so you can compare, hope you wore better footwear back then, not simular Nick wore on your trips during early covert LOL
I can’t remember what I wore tbh, yes, Nick’s flip flops have gained almost legendary status now Raymond
@@karlsthailand yes Nick gave us all a bit of a laugh, you had right footwear
Well done Karl loved it
Cheers Andrew, part 4 on it’s way. Hope you are well
Great photos Karl . It was great in the eighties!! Poste restante ...
Thanks. Yes, Poste Restante lol, thumbing your way through hundreds of letters looking for one with your name on it.
I really enjoyed that Karl, Thank you. This is the Thailand I remember as the best of times, way more innocent than now. I really hope you keep sharing! Thanks again! They were the best years ever!
Thanks Tony, I’m happy that it’s brought a bit of that time back for you. There are at least another 4 videos to come, basically every year from 1987-1992
Great stories. So glad I found your channel.
Thanks Glenn, glad to have you on board
I was staying in Sunflower Bungalow Koh Samui towards the end of 1986. The photo at 10:53 show Sue (rear, left) the wife of the owner, Yung. The Thai at the rear, right is Porn, who was in charge of the kitchen etc.
That's great. I assume you have also seen my most recent video where I go back there?
@@karlsthailand Yes, it's all gone now. Your video nearly gave me a heart attack when I saw you followed in the same path: Freddy no 2 to Chiang Mai and then to Sunflower. To see people I knew in your photos was very emotional for me after all these years.
The Thai girl who is mostly concealed in the photo may be Daang who was the kitchen junior/scullery maid.
Not sure which photograph you are referring to tbh ? There is a girl called Daeng in one of the pictures I took in the Blue Fox. You might enjoy this video if you haven't seen it already th-cam.com/video/gpAmYN-aQe4/w-d-xo.html
Another great video Karl.
Thanks very much
Excellent, as always.
Thanks Michael
Ohhh Wow! Great stuff! Thank you!
My pleasure Tony, more coming
Great memories and photographs. Did you ever keep in touch with any of the girls you met? I bet you wonder where they are and what there doing?
Thanks. I kept in touch with some of them for a year or two and saw them on subsequent trips but gradually lost touch. It wasn’t like today where all you need is their Facebook. Yes, I wonder too
