Have a question about composition & possibly a future video idea.
Was/am literally listening, via ROON / QOBUZ to now my 10th album recording while rabbit-holing music history, composers, pieces, even labels, etc. Many, by the way, I may currently own on vinyl too thanks to you, Scott, Mark, etc. YES! One be both a vinyl audiophile AND a digital-phile(?) especially via my 6-7 yrs with ROON.
Here's my Q: while listening to & reading about The Firebird on Wikipedia, there's a short few sentences, "[Firebird]
Stravinsky later created three concert suites based on the work: in 1911, ending with the "Infernal Dance"; in 1919, which remains the most popular today; and in 1945, featuring significant reorchestration and structural changes."
It's the "...reorchestration and structural changes..." part, was/is this common with composers & pieces we've come to appreciate & love? Why so, if common? Didn't know this was done.
    Thanks!

@@DanielHog13 I’m not quite sure what you’re asking. Stravinsky arranged sections of The Firebird for four reasons: its popularity, orchestra size, length and to transfer copyright from Russia to Boosey and Hawkes in London.

Bravo! My favorite Firebird too! Wonderful video, great breakdown and analysis
I am now excited to revisit the Classics 33 and 45, and take one more listen to Tom Fine's later digital effort on vinyl.
Hearing it on my current set up should be a treat.
That "whack" you mention startled me first time I heard it!

I have a copy of this on Mercury Golden Imports, late 70s. I haven’t listened to it in ages but I will give it a listen and check back in!

Ok, the vinyl is dead quiet and the detail is stunning, but I definitely think the bottom end suffers a bit. I can’t complain though as I picked this up for about $1 a couple years back. The bottom end thumps a bit better if I turn up the bass a notch or two on my amp (I usually have tone controls set to 12 o’clock - flat).

Such a special, and wonderful performance.
The Dorati/LSO recordings are magical 👍

It's the BEST (though it's my imprint version, too). My father, who worked in radio, brought this recording home in Fall of '63. My late brother and I knew the Suite, but were totally blown away by this performance. The very vivid fairy-tale plot synopsis on the back cover played a major part in the experience. We would sit in our basement listening area, sometimes watching the sun set through a small window.....the perfect atmosphere for the creepy Kastchei/Prince Ivan dialogue scene. IMO, this recording will never be equaled (though Boulez/NY and Dohnanyi/VPO are also fabulous).
A few things: 1.) The only real blemish in the performance occurs during the "Lever du jour" music (figure 93) when the glockenspiel player must have turned 2 pages at once, and can be heard busily playing his "Infernal Carillon" passage (fig 101) that occurs a bit later (on the CD, it's Track 12, 0:32). 2.) considering your insightful comments on the lavish orchestration, the "Dance of the Firebird" score pages which you show (2:43, 7:53) should have (perhaps) been identified as the much-LESS lavish 1919 revision. 3.) You twice mention 1960, but Gramophone says June 7, 1959 was the recording date (wasn't the Ansermet 1955 recording the only complete Firebird prior to Dorati?). Not trying to be picky, but details are important to us fanatics.
All-in-all, a fine presentation of one of the greatest landmark recordings of all time. LR

@@HassoBenSoba yes, the Kostelanetz version is 1919 version. Misread his handwriting. But I’m sure you get the point I was making. Also, LP and streaming, both original score and Dover, no glock mistakes at the fairly quiet 93.

    • @HassoBenSoba
      @HassoBenSoba หลายเดือนก่อน

@@AudiophiliaChannel I doubt that there was a re-take of the passage that was used in only some releases. Whatever..in the 1991 Polygram CD release...Track 12 - [0:33 to 0:40] the glockenspiel can easily be heard (clear as a bell, you might say) jingling around playing (by mistake I'm sure) the next glock passage (at fig.101). My late brother, who had a tremendous ear for detail, once jokingly said "Maybe it's Stokowski back there improvising". And this was probably 45 years ago, from our first LP versions. You also obviously have a well-attuned ear, and I'm sure you will hear it (along with Dorati's 2 emphatic grunts (with the violins) 2 bars before fig 95. LR

Hi , Thank you for these informative video"s (where you discuss the performance as well as the sound quality). I don't have this performance on vinyl but i do have the stravinsky by dorati on sacd (dsd) (2004) and the dorati sacd made in 2018 (Stereo Sound [SSHRS-039/040]). How would you compare these 3 (vinyl and the 2 sacd's ) sound quality wise? again, love you're videos!

Thank you for a great video, Anthony. The only version I have of this on vinyl is a Philips boxed set, conducted by Sir Colin Davis with the Concertgebouw, and includes Le Sacre du Printemps and Petrouchka. The Dorati is on my list!

I have both the 33rpm Classic and the Speakers Corner of this title. I just double-checked the Speakers Corner and the deadwax is etched with (I think): "HLB-TBS". Cross-referencing with the listing of Speakers Corner cutting engineers on the pure-analogue website - there's no initials that match. Would be curious if anyone has this knowledge. I will say the Classic version is a touch deeper and wider than the Speakers Corner. But both are quite enjoyable and worthy of owning. Would love to hear an original or the single-sided 45rpm one day. (Still holding my breath for ORG to pull a Lazarus and get back into the game).

Definitely agree with everything you said Anthony. I gave up on records years ago ( sorry ) to embrace cd. Have you done a comparison of the two formats and how they differ?. I find that getting the replay volume is tricky on smaller speakers even in my relatively small / average UK living room (12 x 13 x 8 ) due to the wide dynamic range. The speakers I use are of my own custom design for the room ( I am a loudspeaker design engineer ). What sort of listening levels do you use in your room and your system ?. As a side note, I always find orchestral massed violins particularly hard to reproduce realistically. Cheers , Ian . Leicester, UK.

@@IanKnight40 not heard the CD, but it would have to go some to match the dynamic range on that LP! I do enjoy listening at pretty realistic volumes. Maybe not as loud as the flute chair or podium loud, but a pretty good facsimile.

@@AudiophiliaChannelHi Anthony, thanks for your reply, I had better find one of my "vinyl" mates to see if we can do a comparison!. By the way, I don't consider the Qobuz offering to come even close to my version on CD. Cheers, Ian.

Whata great story about your 'kawai' 4 year old!! Thanks much Anthony......now to dig out the SC's version I have that I've embarrassedly never played......too occupied with the Mutti 45rpm DOR0057 that the Japanese put out in the early 80s. King Records made these 45rpm records in the early 80s, kinda ahead of the curve if you think of it..

Through some eBay shenanigans, I wound up with the version Decca put out in 2021, mastered (from digital?) at Abbey Road. This reissue was not mentioned in your review. Since I have not yet played it, is it a worthy contender, or not? Thanks.
