  • In this video I am starting to make a box for a client, the box is to hold two items of different sizes. This is the first installment. You may have seen the finished box make a cameo appearance in the inset movies. More to follow which will complete the prototype.

    Your videos are EXCELLENT! You are such a great teacher --- your videos are so richly detailed. Camera angles are just perfect! I am a relatively new book artist and am thrilled to find a person with your depth and knowledge on you tube, much less with the perfection of your videos! No wasted time or words for you! Thank you so much! . You are truly an inspiration!
    Quick question: do you let your methyl cellulose dissolve in the water overnight? I am readying my cloth for backing, and have been reading that you should mix MC the day before planning to use it in order for it to totally dissolve. Is this true? Or perhaps mixing with warm water would be appropriate if you wanted to use it immediately? I would certainly appreciate your opinion and knowledge on this. THANK YOU so much! Susan

      Methyl cellulose should be allowed to rest after adding water. I sometimes let it rest over night but that is not necessary, after about 20 minutes it is as thick/dense as it will get. If you let it rest over night it will clarify, usually with no difference in the thickness of its body. It can be kept in the refrigerator in a sealed container for a long time and the density stays where I want it. If it is stored a VERY long time it will start to break down and get runny, that's when I throw it away and make a new batch. BTW warm/hot water will make it ( and wheat paste) clump into things that never dissolve.

      Wow, I feel like I’ve been noticed by a rock star!!! THANK YOU so much for such a quick and thorough response! I am glad to know that methyl cellulose will set up within 20 or so minutes and I don’t need to mix it with hot water. I have my fabric and now, can start the process - thanks to you! And I am excited to learn that it will keep in the refrigerator. Very good to know. Again, I think you are an incredible talent and I so appreciate your willingness to share your expertise online. Your videos are just excellent. I am a HUGE FAN. Thank you!!!! Susan

    Brilliant. It took me until 5:50 to figure out why the gage was double thickness. I can be slow at times. Also, I love how this was does with out measuring.

    Mr Sage , do you sharpen your shear or do you have some one sharpen for you? I love that shear!!

    • @Ceropegia
      @Ceropegia  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The shear has not needed to be sharpened in over 30 years.It was made when people made machines to work well and work well beyond their own life time. (and probably dates from some time around the beginning of the 20th century) I did have it sharpened once and that has to be done by an engineer who know what they are doing. I don't even know if that company is still operating because it was back in the '80's, they still had a shop on West Broadway in the city about three blocks from where my studio was in the Cable building on Broadway. All of those machinery businesses left the city decades ago during the evolution of digital typesetting along with a lot of the printers and binderies.
      Thanks for watching.

    Great video. As a material, what's the nearest one to Rexine - I'm thinking of thickness as well as durability.

    Hey! What kind of glue do you use? I tried regular PVA glue and applied it directly to cardboard. Paper didnt glue corectly. It made a lot of wrinkles. What kind of paper do you use? Thanks

    Hello I am just now finding your videos and find them fascinating. I do have a question. What is the lining material that you use?

    • @Ceropegia
      @Ceropegia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In this video it is most likely Canson paper but you can use any good paper, in other videos you will see other types of lining designed for the intended use of the boxes. Thanks for watching, stay safe and get the vaccine as soon as you can.

      @@Ceropegia thank you for the response! Is this paper just decorative or does it serve a mechanical purpose?

    Does the cutter/trimmer have a specific name? What is it? Is it antique? Is that a brake you are using with your foot to hold the paper/board in place? Thanks for making these very informative videos. Have a blessed day.

    • @Ceropegia
      @Ceropegia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cutter is called a Board Shear. It is at least 100 years old now. I have had it since the about 1979. It does have a foot powered clamp to hole the material still while being cut. Thank you for watching, stay safe and get the vaccine as soon as you can.

    What materials are you using?

    • @Ceropegia
      @Ceropegia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The materials were supplied by my client. the lining paper is Canson and the covering material is a grass cloth wall paper. I don't recommend the grass cloth for anything you intend to keep around and use long term. The grass part also breaks when you make folds around corners, it was never meant to be used this way. This box is for an invitation with a video and isn't meant to last much beyond the event. Thanks for watching.
