Congratulations on such wonderful educational videos and thank you!
I have been sort of fighting a lot with some jumpers and even some riggers about the misconception regarding the bridle routing and the "change for the french way" .
And yes, also caught some kill-lines with markings from factory that... heuh.... don't show up when you set the pilot chute hahahah

      Thanks again Tomás Matos,
Be gentle with your colleagues, it's difficult to see things differently if you were shown something else initially,
"It's never given you any trouble before",
we do many things without really having the knowledge or understanding, of the reason for its present evolution or variant.
Hopefully if they see the information in the videos it helps some of them.

What about sizes and fabrics type of pilot chute?

    • @thomson1963
      @thomson1963  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hello Skydive France,
When I started using hand deploy pilot chutes(1979) they were 33"F111(permeable fabric), it was pulling a bag with canopies like Cruiselite, Pegasus and GQ Unit approx.200quare feet.
As time went on, canopies got smaller(150's), line types changed (with no shock absorption qualities)
so the 33" pulled a wee bit too enthusiastically, opening forces went up to an uncomfortable level, the P/C was one of the components making a contribution to this.
Gus Wing gave me a tip, to reduce the pull force of a 33"P/C
"pop it in the washing machine, before first use",
this would increase the permeability (and pull force)(not something I've done for many years)
PdeF the first to use ZP fabric(canopies & P/C) went from 33"to 25" P/C to compensate for the dramatic increase in pull force of the ZP fabric.
Nowadays manufacturers offer a variety of sizes some in F111 or ZP and others only in F111 (UPT=27",30",33", SunPath=28",33",35",38".)
For normal sport skydiving with 170'ish or smaller size canopy I would use 27"permeable fabric(F111)
I think the the non-permeable fabric (ZP) pull too aggressively, not to say you shouldn't use them,
but if you had the opportunity to try a ZP and then a F111 on you Rig, you will feel the difference.
With a Rig in the 260-280 size canopy, I would use 33"F111, for the heavier bag it need to haul up.

    I have a question.
why do you opose the french way
I agree with you, that it is there for the wrong reason, but wouldn't the french way + education on proper kill-line setting , be the good solution ?
Instead of resisting the change to the french way + éducation .
    See what i mean ?
Does the french way has any other benefits other then preventing pin though bridle problem ?
    Thanks :)
Edit ; i wrote this comment before listening to the entire video. nevermind. :)

      Hello Philippe,
Thank you for making the time to watch the video and your question.
I don't oppose the French way, of routing the bridle.
When some of the manufacturers recommended the change, it saddened me,
not because it's bad, more because it wasn't hitting the nail on the head.
I wish they had made a bigger effort, to get the message across to users, on the correct way to prepare a KillLine pilot chute.
      However,
Most green marks appear in the window too early,
most jumpers aren't properly educated on the system requirements.
So go ahead and follow the manufacturers recommendations, it's good enough
and please help all your friends set their P/C correctly.
Remember there are many out there that are impossible to set correctly, without modification by a knowledgeable maintenance person first.
I will continue to do what I consider just fine, based on empirical evidence I've gathered so far, whilst working on sport parachutes.
      (Marginal gains theory)
      i.e. Call me Old-fashioned.
The PSB2015-01, may not be hitting the nail on the head either,
if every jumper made Test Pulls After a reserve repack,(as well as before)
(If you don't measure it you can't improve it)
there would be more reports of Hard Pulls and then hopefully the ReservePin
(+ rigging) quality would be improved.
I have many more Poor quality Pins, in my collection than I have 2014/2015 Spectra Reserve Ripcords with Excessive Urethane Coating.
