- For this game we're choosing our commanders from Jumpstart 2022! We'll be playing Isu the Abominable vs. Mizzix, Replica Rider vs. Zask, Skittering Swarmlord vs. Preston the Vanisher.

That's allot of elfs for insect tribal xD it's more of a combo deck rather than insect tribal imo
I learned about Verdant Succession just a few days ago, and immediately ordered it for my Zask build, but after this video, I consider getting Vigor and Dread as well for it :D

That is a great deck building. I wonder how fast this deck if you dont get the gaea's cradle and the elf mana early.
We’ll have a follow up match with the same decks coming out soon, I don’t think Matt gets as explosive of a start in that one.

How can you replay hornet queen when zask causes your insects that die to never hit the graveyard? Wouldnt that mean insect deaths would not proc verdant succession?
Zask says when they die put them on the bottom of the library, so they die, hit the graveyard, then are moved to the bottom of the library. If it said "put them on the bottom of your library instead" they wouldn't go to the graveyard first
@@tylergosdin4260 I don't think that's right. A death trigger has to happen before the enter the graveyard trigger, obviously. When it's placed into the library it goes from being a dead creature on the field to a card that is moving to your library. It never enters the graveyard.
@@alexzoin The difference is it's a death trigger, not a replacement effect. Replacement effects circumvent what WOULD normally happen. Something dying causes it to go to the graveyard. This is seen on other cards like Yedora, Grave Gardener, which brings your creatures back as forest lands after the die. The creatures die and still go to the graveyard triggering LTB and death triggers, but are then returned from the graveyard to the battlefield.

I'm making a Preston the Vanisher deck that focuses on venture into the Dungeon and initiative mechanics, meets party 🥳 and does have A use for it. The idea is to speed run through dungeons for value. Still uses a lot of the infinite combos pieces so theoretically could venture into the Dungeon infinitely. Technically could be kinda budget. I had to add anointed Procession, and obviously MOM when she's legal as well as Nykthos to bring the price up.
An underrated card in Preston is Scion of Vitu-Ghazi. Etb make a bird then populate. Infinite populate anyone?

Which to be fair doesn't go infinite per se. But it will expound every one of your combats after you have blinked the original. They could just populate the token versions of themselves/each other/ whatever else you have a token of.
yes!! nesting dovehawk is great, and it doesnt really matter but i think the art matches preston's vibe really neatly :_)
i wanted to build Preston bc i really like the artwork and the flicker tricks you can do, but im goldfishing it and i think going infinite every game would really not match the vibe of my playgroup
i think i'll just wait for bloomburrow to come out in 2024! hopefully there'll be new commanders in a similar vibe to preston@@ProphetofEndTimes

So many Zask and Grist decks on TH-cam be like "I dont want to do bugs, let me go way off script and do elves and skeletons" WTF! Insects aren't that bad!

I feel like the Verdant Succession combo is wrong.
Zask says "whenever an insect dies put it on the bottom of its owner's library" so it never enters the graveyard? A creature is put into the graveyard after it dies. A death trigger has to happen before it enters the graveyard.
