    Maaaaaan! Here in michigan, this car would sell for 2 grand just because it has no rust! No inspections here, so this thing would be clear and completely legal.

    • @scottkrafft6830
      @scottkrafft6830 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah exactly! People don't understand when I tell them all these cars that they get are worth so much more up here.

    • @valenciah3690
      @valenciah3690 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I'm in Michigan too (Metro Detroit) and NO WAY would it be worth $2k here lol. On Craigslist you'd be LUCKY to get $1,500 with 180k miles and it being a basic model. If it were a Z24, an LS Sport, or even a convertible it might fetch slightly higher, but this would be a $1,000-$1,200 car ONLY because of the body condition like you said, and the working A/C since it's Summer. These things (especially the coupes) are usually ALL rotted out in the rockers and under the fuel door here (a lot of the fuel doors usually fall off on these lol) so those are the only perks this one has. Definitely worth saving as a beater car though.

    • @KatoJac
      @KatoJac 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed, even in Minnesota these things in fairly decent condition aren't worth hardly anything. Hell, even Cobalts barely sell for anything nowadays.

      Hey man florida doesnt any emissions or safety inspections in florida either this what you call in florida fix it up and flip it for cash profit flipper car.

    • @NoMoneyG
      @NoMoneyG 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Florida "USED TO" due emissions when I lived there, but only in certain counties Like "Pinellas" (Tampa Bay Area) and "Broward" (Miami Area), the larger populated counties, not all. Then thank God they stopped that shit!! Every fucking year I couldn't pass due to some stupid bullshit thing.
      Used to be $10 bucks and if you failed, you got 1 "freebie" to get checked again after you got it fixed. If you failed again, then went up to like $15-20? Anyways, they stopped doing it cause someone said it was discrimination that all counties didn't do it. It only lasted about maybe 5yrs? or some shit like that.

    I currently own a 2004 Cavalier 4 door base model, has 109,000 miles on the clock. Usual issues with the dash cracking but not as bad as this particular car. Never been stranded and it's been reliable since I got it 3 years ago, I love it

      I have seen Cavaliers with 300,000 miles that are still on the road. Chevy never should have discontinued it. Instead they came out with the crappy Cobalt. The Cavalier was Chevy's longest running compact car nameplate.

    Not a bad car minus the radio and the easy to find plastic interior pieces.
    Let us know if someone picks it up cuz it's worth buying it as a daily driver!
    At the same time tho, there's a yellow-orange one that's not so lucky as the silver one you videoed.

  • @jefferysmith3930

    This is an example of what is no longer built: just a good, basic car that looks decent. I started working at a Chevy store when this generation first came out in 1995. Having come from a Nissan store, I couldn’t believe how inexpensive these were when new compared to a comparable Nissan. Never owned one, but drove a bunch of ‘em and always liked them - especially the coupes. The styling still holds up well 20+ years later. I think they borrowed the styling from the GM Europe Opel Calibra. I hope someone snaps it up.

    • @jefferysmith3930
      @jefferysmith3930 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mercury Milan Fan Club: OK, I’ll give you the Versa but the Mirage?!. That’s a terrible car. Plus it looks like it riding around on temporary spare tires. A good basic car needs to have at least a little sense of style

  • @DanielsCarTalkChannel
    @DanielsCarTalkChannel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    While I’ll admit Chevy Cavalier wouldn’t be my first choice, just having high mileage is a lousy reason to scrap the car. I’d fix the AC vent, put a radio in along with some speakers, clean it up and it would probably be a decent car.

    • @dvaeogreg5557
      @dvaeogreg5557 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Straight up Daniel. Tremendous waste out there.
      Hand stitch that seat together with some fishing line, interior douche out, new mats, maintenance like oil and filter, coolant, belts and hoses, anything that might strand you, and keep rolling.

    • @calsand6

  • @RhinoXpress

    that car would be easy to fix up for cheap. those dents could be popped out and those dashboard trim pieces can easily be replaced since they're just the plastic sections on the dashboard that are cracked. those radios can be easliy found at a cheap price as well.

      Parts i used to fix it..
      New fuel filter, inline not tank.
      Ran a bottle of fuel injection cleaner.. used lucas super concentrated.
      Cleaned the throttle body, it sucked but i took it off the car and cleaned it all out.. ran fantastic after that..

    Cheap little 2 door wouldn't be bad for a point A to point B transportation. That dinger is something else. And 185k Miles is "High" Apparently

    • @scottkrafft6830
      @scottkrafft6830 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is VERY high. For me anything above 100K is high, 150K I'd consider extremely high. My mom's car died at 47,000 miles from rust, so to say that almost 3 times that amount isn't high is crazy.

    • @brianleeper5737
      @brianleeper5737 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I've got a 2002 Cavalier (4 door) with 240,000 miles with the 2200 engine and 4 speed auto and it runs beautiful. I live out in the west with low humidity and magnesium chloride instead of road salt so it has absolutely no rust, even on the rear frame rails. Definitely not the fastest car but IMO it's comfortable, cheap to work on and super reliable and gets really good gas mileage. Don't understand why cavaliers get so much hate.

    Growing up in a trailer park, these were all over the place! Mostly the earlier models though. By 2002, most of my neighbors had graduated to Blazers. The first brand-new car I ever drove was a rented 2002 Chevy Cavalier - I think I was maybe the second or third customer to drive it - still had that new Chevy smell. At the time, I was in 12th grade and was getting dealer warranty work done to my newly purchased 1997 Mazda 626. Having driven a new example of the Cavalier (base model sedan if I recall), I distinctly remember it as being one of the WORST driving cars I had EVER driven - the ride quality was trash, the handling was trash, the transmission was trash... but despite all that, it still had an impressive amount of standard equipment - ABS, Traction Control, CD Player, PW, PL, Cruise, and Tilt Wheel! One of the worst aspects of the 2002 Cavalier were the SEATS!! I swear those were one step above police car back seats... upholstered in burlap, if I recall.

    The key to these engines not eating head gaskets is to not let the engine overheat. I am currently driving a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire that has been in the family since 2006 and has 267K on it and it runs very well, paint looks like hell but we have no car payment. I have seen these cars go north of 400K miles.

    The 2.2 liter engine was also found in the Corsica. The 2.2 was also noted for it's head gasket problem. The exhaust manifold is too short, and it causes the gaskets to fail. The Chevy S-10 also had the 2.2 engine. On the S-10 the exhaust ports are longer. I remember our 1992 Cavalier with the 3.1 V-6. That Cavalier had gobs of torque, and it was a sleeper. It left everything else in the rear view mirror.

    I have this exact same car except mine is a sedan. 235k and absolutely reliable. I have gotten 34 mpg on the freeway. That broken bezel is still available from gm part #22698064. Replace that and the stereo and do maintenance on it and it will go another 100k.

    I love those little J-bodies. I owned a 2005 Sunfire myself, a very rare one for the year with the 5-speed manual. Nearly all of the Sunfires in 2005 were autos, I wanted the manual transmission and literally found the needle in the haystack. I purchased it the very next day. It was a really fun little car and I owned it for about 3 years.
    I do hope someone saves this one. That car is much too nice and seems to run too well just to scrap or part out.

    Thanks for your videos Jay. Seeing which cars are scrapped and at what mileage gives a real perspective for a car man. In the end they are all scrapped. I drive older Toyotas myself. But here is a Chevy question I’ve heard the later model Cobalts and Impalas are pretty fine. T or F?

    I hope someone save it. Liked the "poor little Cavalier' bit. Maybe the check engine light is something simple. Ya never know, thogh. The Missus '05 Civic Coupe has been in the family for just over 10 years at 74k and beyond the usual brakes, tires and such never needed anything. The other day, the check engine light came on. 4 emission related valves and other stuff with labor came to just over $1300. Money well spent. Car's a gem!

    I had a 1996 pontiac sunfire 2.2L automatic 170k miles. It was owned since new, a one owner. I sold it on craigslist back on 2012 for $1000. Pretty much same condition except I didn't have a check engine light. One bad issue with no air conditioning in TN, I worked nightshift so I didn't care. I had people calling me like crazy for this car. Some losers were trying to offer me 300 dollars for the car and said "will you take $300 it's all I have and I'm desperate for a car" Another guy wanted me to take 500 dollars because it's gonna be his daughter's first car. I couldn't believe the kinds of folks who will say anything to get you to lower the price. The first guy who saw it bought it for my asking price with straight cash.

    Here in the UK, 185k is considered high miles. Unless it's a Volvo 240 or an old Merc, anything with over 100k is generally regarded as being past its best.
    We didn't get this generation of Cavalier; when it's boxy predecessor was discontinued in 1989, we got the Opel Vectra A (still badged as a Vauxhall Cavalier) and then the Vectra B in 1995. Modt had an 1800 or 2.0 engine so this 2.2 would have been quite quick by comparison. Pretty much all have now rotted away and have become a very rare sight on UK roads.
    This doesn't look like a bad little car with the dash / radio fixed and dents pushed out, worth plugging in a diagnostic to see what is causing the engine light too. Probably just a sensor or the like.

    I bet that check engine light is on due to needing a new gas cap or something really simple. I used to have an 03 with around 150k on it and the CEL came on so I took it up to Advance Auto Parts and they scanned in and told me try a new gas cap. It went off after a few days.

      Alloy wheels, automatic transmission, and a rear spoiler are the only options on this one. Still a tiny bit nicer than the base model. LS Sport are the nice loaded up ones. :)
