This was one of the greatest baseball games in history. Unfortunately, due to the popularity of the teams, it is easily forgotten. It had it all. Seasons on the line, multiple lead changes, controversy, a grand slam (!!!), extra innings, a walk-off, and yet more controversy. A true classic!
As a Rangers fan, I agree with the popularity aspect. A Series like Rangers-Cards 2011 doesn’t get the *all-timer* recognition of a Red Sox-Mets 1986, and that’s solely on the Rangers not being famous/mainstream enough. Same with Marlins-Yanks 2003, Marlins-Indians 1997... Imo though, this is more a Rockies Classic than *all-time great game* - BUT the 13th counts as 1 of the best innings ever 🔹Season on the line, Padres take lead 🔹All time saves leader & future HOF Hoffman comes in 🔹Tulo shows exactly why he was (almost) NL ROY, Holliday then ties it & wins batting title (that clutch hit could’ve won him MVP) 🔹Rockies make quick work of Hoffman on their way to 21/22 & the pennant 🔹Controversy with Holliday at home THE Defining moment in that historic streak has my vote EDIT: Wow didn’t realize Braun beat out Tulo by 2pts for NL Rookie🤷🏽♂️
Bit embarrassing hearing Orsillo before he was the SD announcer, having just flown from calling the game for Boston 2 days prior. Good guy, professional and quick witted but boy was there oversaturation of Boston media in that period
Sox fan here…one of the most amazing runs I’ve ever seen. As crazy as this sounds, I wish they gave us more of a series…that was an unforgettable team that any other year would’ve probably won it all. To this day I still am not sure how they handled that so dominantly. Of the 4 (well, 3) teams they beat in the World Series in the 2000’s I felt most bad about making the Rockies suffer.
Me, not having watched this game & noticing Adrian Gonzalez’s stats @ 9:01 : 🤔1HR 4RBI would be a great way to round out those numbers... Cut to 44:22: 😆😂
XboxClips some interesting notes about this tiebreaker (besides this obviously being a classic). - first of three straight seasons with a tiebreaker game/ game 163 * only one that was for a Wild Card, and only one where the winner advanced past the division series - had the Mets won vs the marlins the previous day, the Phillies and Mets would’ve had an NL East tiebreaker with the loser taking part in a three-way NL Wild Card tiebreaker. - if this were the NL Wild Card Game in 2012 or later, the winner would’ve faced the Diamondbacks and not the Phillies, this is due to the fact that the division series restricted intradivisional matchups in the division series prior to the Wild Card Game being a main fixture in the format. - Had this tiebreaker game been held in 2009 or 2010 (or as the NL Wild Card Game post-2011), the game still would’ve been held at Coors Field due to the Rockies holding the 10-8 head-to-head entering this game.
Yep, before they expanded the playoffs to 10 teams in 2012 and then to 12 teams in 2022 but now since the last and most recent expansion, they just do the old fashioned tiebreaker system like the other sports leagues so we won’t ever see one-game playoffs like this again
This is the greatest game in Rockies history there is no question. Winning the pennant was nice but this is what I remember, and I was at the World Series.
It is amazing that Atkins (didn’t?) hit a home run, and the guy who pinch ran for him wound up hitting the Sac Fly that scored Holliday. Yes, that scored Holliday.
As a Rockies fan, 2007 was the pinnacle. It's too bad they met a really strong Boston team. I don't know when we fans will get our chance to watch a team like this again.
I’m a Padres fan and Matt Holliday never touched home, Padres should have won this game, BUT I was rooting for the Rockies against the Red Sox that year. They had a long lay off before the WS, sweeping everyone.
It's mind blowing looking back on this game how obviously out he was at home. That play should have been a double play and the game might have continued.
Sadly all tiebreakers & playoffs are through network TV (FOX/TBS). Someone would have to take a radio feed & match it to video, which I’ve personally never seen done for a full game
@@gcc107 You’d have to voice record on your phone, then screen record that voice recording to make that possible as far as sharing a whole game of a radio call. That’s just the audio, which I am assuming can work on Android phones also but I know for a fact on iPhones you can do that.
You can clearly see that Atkins hit a homerun @2:04:05 instead of a double. If that wheelchair wasn't there, that ball isn't bouncing back into the field.

Now in 2022, we will no longer have one game playoff tiebreaker games sadly. However, the playoff field expansion to 12 teams does compensate for the loss of one game playoffs.
next tiebreaker that will happen is for the nl west between the padres and the dodgers in 2021. padres win it on walk off and force the dodgers to spend october on the couch
He was great too for the 2014 AL Wild Card Game and pretty much every game he called during that Royals World Series run. Also did pretty good with the 2017 NL Wild Card Game between the Rockies and the Diamondbacks, which now Arizona is finally back in the playoffs in 2023. I think he’s a little underrated.
Yep. Instant replay would have overturned that call. Holliday's hand clearly got blocked by the catcher's foot. But the Rockies still had Helton at 1st, but 2 outs. Brad Hawpe due up. And I am a Rockies fan, I said to myself back then Rockies got a huge break. ...Would have been interesting to see how the game played out if Holliday was called out. San Diego losing the last two games in Milwaukee set the stage. If San Diego takes care of their business there, no tiebreaker needed.
This was the last time my team was in the playoffs 😭😭😭. I was only 2 and barely remembered this, and this was the last time until 2010 that my team was in contention at all for the playoffs. 300 million dollars isn’t gonna do this especially when you have Manny Machado.
Oh, so this was why mlb eventually went to replay. How the Fk did the Ump miss that play at the plate? No one even argued, and it was so obvious. . Never touch home plate.
Who? Oh, are you referring to the Yankee reliever who blew the save in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series ? Arguably the biggest choke job in Major League Baseball history? That Mariano? I guess the voters forgot about that when they unanimously voted into the HOF. What Is a joke. For the record, the umpire was responsible for Trevor losing that game. Talk about a blown call. In the Umps defense, it must been hard to see what was going while his head was stuck in a very stinky place.
been a Padre fan since '73. And so, Ive certainly seen the worst games, as well as the best games this franchise, ever played. But this game?....was the most infamous game in the history of the franchise. Yea, I know...its not a franchise with a whole lot of history in the first place. But its still, among the most painful games to watch if you happen to be a fan of this team.
Considering this also was the kickstart of a 14 year long playoff drought, it took the team a very long time to recover from this loss. At least now they finally have gotten back to being a playoff team and a potential championship contender with the roster they have now.
face it man, Rockies and Padres are no better than the Rangers, sure the Astros are 1 for 3 in the World Series and granted they switched leagues from NL to AL, but the way I see it, one is better than none, Go Astros!

I was there, in the very last row. It was epic!
TBS's first ever postseason game.
This Rockies team had such a fun ride to end this season winning 21 of 22 to get the NL pennant. Amazing.
technically this is a regular season game isn't it?
Yes this was game 163. There was only one wild card team in 2007
Bit embarrassing hearing Orsillo before he was the SD announcer, having just flown from calling the game for Boston 2 days prior. Good guy, professional and quick witted but boy was there oversaturation of Boston media in that period
Such an amazing run with the rookie Tulo at SS, the summer and fall of 2007 will live forever in Colorado!

Big choke from Hoffman, as great as a closer he is, he couldn't capitalize on big situations, I still prefer Mo over Hoffman.
Hoffman, Benitez, and Wagner
That double in the 7th by Garrett Atkins wouldn’t even be overturned with instant replay wow 😮 that was so close
It is amazing that Atkins (didn’t?) hit a home run, and the guy who pinch ran for him wound up hitting the Sac Fly that scored Holliday. Yes, that scored Holliday.
The ball doesn't bounce like that off the top of the wall, that had to have hit the seat beyond the fence.

this was the game that ushered in the wildcard era from 2008 til 2021 before the recent changes made it a series.
Coors field sure loved techno music back then. And for some reason the 6 flags theme song
they still do love that music, and the 6 flags was cause 6 flags elitch's theme park downtown
Don't let Matt Holiday missing home plate distract you from the fact that Trevor Hoffman blew the save in extras.
Did trevor Hoffman ever not choke in clutch situations?
Man this was an amazing year for Rockies baseball, too bad they just couldn't keep up with Boston.
Yeah it was. But the 8 game lay off is what kill the Rockies.
Whats the song playing at the stadium from 1:06-2:30 ?
Nobody talks about this really cause Padres and Rockies are not gonna be clinching a division title any time soon
A season so great, an extra game was given.
