What excites me about the project is the passion and the poetry of the client, the building also reflects the character and the philosophy of the couple.
Yet another greatly curated episode by Grand Design.

The other thing that is so striking is how the sky and clouds reflect in the glass stair tower! LOVELY.

Always loved water towers! This is a fantastic reinvention/reimagining of a beautiful piece of history.

Pretty cool Architect, knows what he’s doing, knows what his clients want too. Really cool building.

Denise and I are one of a kind! She probably rescues things that ARE valuable, only people are too stupid to see the value until she comes along to show it to them. In a sense, she is a Translator! She pulls the beauty out of an object. (I take paper, stuff others discard, and make Art from it).
In Africa, people go to the rubbish dump, get tin cans and make extraordinary things out of them. THAT is the New Art Form for this century: EVERYTHING WE THROW OUT, reconfigured (and therein lies the Magic. In the reconfiguration).
THAT is what they are doing HERE! I find it VERY exciting!!

Did you see the Antiques Roadshow episode about a woman who brought in a small side table she'd bought for around $25 at a garage sale years earlier? The only thing she'd done to it was a gentle cleaning with soap and water. It turned out to be a rare piece of early American furniture and sold at auction for around $500K.

@@happydays1336 I did not see that one, but I love, love LOVE Antiques Roadshow! (However, I do find it a bit difficult/distasteful seeing people that ONLY value something when they are told that it is worth $BIG BUCKS: The ones that keep the painting in a closet/attic/garage until they are told it' has monetary worth. Then I get depressed!).

Good design imo. I could live there very happily. And selling it later for 850,000 shows how well the design was.

My only question is, she said she wanted a 'practical' design, but how is an aging couple going to navigate all those stairs over 4 levels?

The gentleman seems still young enough to easily do that, and the lady's physical job keeps her fit enough to do that as well. If she had an office job, then it might be another story. Many people in their 80s in places such as rural China or rural Vietnam would outwork most city's 20-year olds

They'll be in good shape after climbing those stairs day in and day out.
The drum "lantern" on top of the addition should have been left in wood and not clad with the Zinc.

50k over with that furnishing they probably could of saved 20k being more forceful with both builder and architect

This does not have integrity. The additions seems like boxes randomly dragged there by magnetism. The concrete is punctured with ordinary windows.
To add, all of this will have incredibly high heating demand as well as high demand for materials per square meter.

I fell in love with the tower in the same way the couple did, but I think the architect missed the mark in a lot of ways. Visually, the proportions feel very clunky and the color palette seem very stark and contrasting.
I’m glad the couple seem to love it, but I feel like they could have gotten a lot more bang for their buck. Kevin brought up much of this in a passive way and I think he was right.

I totally and utterly disagree with you. By the time they started construction, the price of the steel needed had gone up by 50 thousand, and the couple wanted a nice interior with a very nice kitchen. The architect did a great job

Thank God black countertops have gone out of fashion (like the dark heavy furniture of the 2010s). They suck all the light out of the rooms. Not a fan of all white cupboards either. But fashion is fashion, even in interiours.

    You doing something fantastic,
But the both of you look like you'll be sixty soon are you going to go up and down those stairs for time to come,🙁
You dont have to be so extravigant for the two.
So silly to have a mortgage.

This was filmed from 2004. According to another comment they lived happily in it for years and then sold it in 2017 making a good profit, so it all worked out.

The presenter is insufferable. So negative and constantly running down the project with his "ugly duckling" nonsense. The show ought to have had multiple presenters they rotated through so each one could hype up the projects. The house doesn't need to be 5000 square feet to be unique, interesting, or beautiful, and given that it's just for two people, it would've been a huge waste if it was! I think the redesign was thoughtful and gorgeous.
