      Great Find. Thank you for the experience. Imagine the panic of the SS officer who buried these medals that were used to shower the troupes in the final days before Hitler used children and old men to hold the lines near Berlin. The hole was not too deep since maybe the ground was frozen at the time in the winter of '44 or January of '45. Zhukov and Konev's armies would not take prisioners, especially decorated solders. Not after Stalingrad.

    My dad grew up in a small town of Dolgen (A small town near Hannover) he said after the war the solders dumped all their guns, ammo etc..in the town pond. The kids (including him) would try and dive and retrieve the objects. Good find you got there that day! ;-)

    • @hkhjg1734
      @hkhjg1734 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @seanharris6982
      @seanharris6982 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Harrison D If they are not marked or found by a repatriation organization they are fair game. Properly marked and recognized graves should be left alone, but if you are like this man detecting in the woods and finding relics from soldiers who are long dead, they certainly aren't going to object. If one finds a dog tag it is a different story.

When I was a teen, I was out in the desert in Arizona and stumbled onto a huge mass of native American potsherds. It was very cool for me as a young teen to make such a find. Occasionally, while stumbling around in the desert, we would find arrowheads. Wish I had them now.

    • @tomservo5347
      @tomservo5347 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think a group of German soldiers made a pact to burn their Iron Crosses versus having them stripped as mere war trophies. At this late stage of the war the Nazi cronies were handing out Iron Crosses like candy to anyone foolish enough to wear a uniform for the excellent chance of dying. If I knew I was about to be captured I'd do the same to draw as little attention to myself as possible.

    as a 35 yr collector of all military items,,I find some of the comments really funny..1st of all,they are 2nd class ek (iron crosses).these were given out 4 a military deed done well..this means a runner carrying a message all the way to something more exemplary.a 2nd class was given out 1st.they had ribbons and could be worn in social situations,,with both metal and ribbon,,or the ribbon was sewn thru the 2nd buttonhole of a uniform.when a deed of more merit was accomplished,a pin back 1st class i.c.was issued2 the soldier,pinned thru small threads on his tunic.when someone says they are ss killers metals,,your ignorance shines thru..many soldiers wore these who weren't murderers!!great find,,my theory is that these German soldiers hid them cause ww2 was a souvenir war,,the low rankers who wore them did not want them going back 2 russia,,and hid them 4 that reason.a Russian bullet was found,,so that's my theory..if they had been captured by americans,they probably would have traded them 4 cigarettes or chocolate..cool find,,thanks 4 sharing...

    • @KlugscheisserDan
      @KlugscheisserDan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    • @panzerwolf494
      @panzerwolf494 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, likely a bunch of Germans buried them to avoid getting more grief. Some allies, especially Russians, picked out the guys with iron crosses for "special" privileges like an extra round of beat downs or even an execution

    • @KlugscheisserDan
      @KlugscheisserDan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @KlugscheisserDan
      @KlugscheisserDan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you would be right lime would dissolve buttons and other metal objects too but it doesn´t. And by the way at that location the wehrmacht simply didn´t had the time to cover bodies with lime cause it was a few days before the end of war and neither did they have any lime there nor would they have cared anymore.

    A lot of these comments don't make sense. Obviously it's not a grave. This wasn't an area where soldiers burned their uniforms either, or else the buttons and other metal parts of the uniforms would've been detected, and they would've been more scattered. It looks like a box or bag of medals (because they were within inches of each other) was thrown into an old burn pit. The burn pit was likely for tree branches or paper/cardboard since no nails or standard metal garbage debris was detected. Likely the Iron Crosses were never awarded- maybe they were intended to be but things collapsed too fast at the end of the war. I don't think anyone at that time foresaw they would be of any value in the future, given the war was lost and the Reich fell. The medals were considered garbage.

I'm not a Nazi sympethist and detest what was done during that era but never the less, this is still a very exciting find. I am of German descent and think this is a wonderful find just to stare at it and contemplate possible scenarios of where they came from. Congrats on the huge find!

    You look very cold! What a gorgeous treasure trove! I once had a teacher tell me it takes a hundred years to make an inch of topsoil. I was looking at the charcoal and I admit I was a little worried at the bullet casings, was hoping you didn't find anything else. When I went to the Lincoln museum in Hodgenville, Kentucky, they had two large showcases full of slugs and casings from the civil war. After studying them, then reading up on them, I now know from the distortion of them that they went through soldiers before lying there and getting found.

    I imagine the crosses were thrown on the fire along with the broken glasses by someone not seeing any value in them.Perhaps during or after the endgame,by german or alliance soldiers.
    Or maybe by "looters" enjoying some schnapps at the fire.
    I think the fire would bury them,maybe helped by someone putting out the fire.

    It looks like they threw them into a fire and then covered them up. What an amazing find! Maybe deserters? I hope you plotted where you found this stash, there might be more stuff out there.

    Very nice find indeed ! I am envious ! Defiantly a HUGE fire pit. Have dug civil war relics here in the states the same way.Those are so much fun ! I can hear your excitement in your voice and I don't blame you ! I love the history of an artifact if it could only talk ....Myself I would have taken some of the ash and charcoal too to display with the artifacts. If you don't electrolysis the iron parts I would use a coating of EXTEND on the iron parts.Another thing you might want to do is take you a big screen around 3'x3' and sift your dirt out of that hole. a lot of times things are very deep and small from those fire pits.Open that hole up to you don't see any more ash. Anyway GREAT JOB ! GREAT FIND !

    • @KlugscheisserDan
      @KlugscheisserDan  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Paul Mcguire Given all facts it´s at least in my opinion most probably they were never worn they were still to be awarded. It´s highly unlikly(but not impossible) that 13 guys who had "only" their 2nd class iron crosses(not any other medal) decided to bury their medals at one place. It´s more likely that the guy/officer/etc who had to give them out threw them away cause he had to flee or the war was already over.

    Greetings from Australia; my Half German ancestry came out here from Dresden in 1847. I so love the metal detecting done over there .. as I enjoy all military history.
    Charcoal and Crosses... maybe at the cessation of the war .. they were thrown in the fire .... ???

    What a find, there's nothing in central Illinois to dig and no one will let you dig anyway. I would guess that since you found Russian ammo that they burned the medals. Great channel, I'll sign up now.

    • @KlugscheisserDan
      @KlugscheisserDan  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +David Wacker Thank you but I don´t think they burned them. I think they were not handed out yet and were discarded by the person who should award them. Why I don´t know. There don´t show any burn marks.
      Thanks for your interest.

    Great find..... If they we're all KCs you would be sat on a small fortune. But still. To find a number of Iron cross second class in a bundle like that is amazing. Originally given for a single act of courage and while carrying all the pomp in the early years of the war - they quickly became more a gesture of encouragement to german soldiers than anything else in the later years.

    • @KlugscheisserDan
      @KlugscheisserDan  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +VimyScout Right, right and right! The ic 2nd class was given out about 3 million times between 39 and 45 in the end as you already said more to boost the morale with the very young soldiers.

    Spectacular find. Credit to you for saving these from certain loss. The idea they were discarded and possibly burnt by soldiers to avoid being singled out on capture seems likely, or else a reserve of crosses that were never awarded. A great story.

    • @KlugscheisserDan
      @KlugscheisserDan  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I consider them not yet awarded though the soil looks like being burnt it isn´t. The charcoal is likely from a campfire or a fire in the forrest from a later time. If the Germans would have burnt the crosses the should have burn marks but they have not.
      Best wishes. daniel

    Yo that was so cool I'm jealous of you. Where was this shot? What kind of activity took place in this area during WWII? I think your theory about them going to soldiers but never making it completely there makes the most sense. Kind of said in a way. The history or story of these relics is what most fascinates me but it is really up to the imagination. Well good job, can tell you were having good time that day P.S. I didn't know they where constructed in 3 pieces, always thought is one whole piece. Was that dumb of me to not know that? Wow this was so cool thank you lucky guy

    Отличные находки! Завидую. Бывает за весь сезон ни одной пуговицы не найдешь, а тут аж 13 крестов в одном месте! Потрясающе! Хотя... Я знаю где лежит примерно 5 кг таких же. ))) На дне Волги. Мой дед, участник Сталинградской битвы, рассказывал что после освобождения Сталинграда один солдат из его роты принес мешок крестов и они выбросили их в Волгу. ))
