On the subject of replacing the background soundtrack to "disguise" the silence; don't. We love it. I also feel like lots of others have mimicked you (or vice versa) and by that, that sound has become the "de facto" slow mo sound. No slowmotion video is complete without it. Anyway, great video 👍

Yeah, I agree. At this point, you used it SO much, you get more flak IF you replace it. It really IS a signature sound after all this time. Just keep it as is.
Seriously, the number of things that Gavin has just intuitively figured out and taught himself (including stellar sound design) is amazing. Truly an eye and ear for detail. I actually went to school for audio engineering, and there's a lot of stuff in this video that some people in my classes struggled to understand.

I'm sure he would swap it by a similar sound and not replace it forever, but merely sometimes. It's actually 'ambient' music btw. It's a genre. The space part is just what it's themed around.
The attention to detail is seriously an art form. I mean 9 hours just doing sound for one video like that’s intense and the result is more beautiful than the random viewer could imagine. And the sound for filling up silence is both comforting/familiar and perfectly relaxing. Sometimes “professional” is just years of experience, hard work, and passion
Being a sound designer myself I found this very interesting. I am a little bit surprised that the real sound captured on set is almost entirely useless most of the time, though I think that the fact that you slow down all the library sound elements makes them believable even though they are still orders of magnitude faster than the footage. If I could give you one tip - add highpass filters at 50-70 Hz to get rid of the very low boomy stuff that sometimes piles up and creates clipping in your videos. You could also use a limiter to prevent the clipping. When designing sounds for a film I usually fill the empty spaces with "room tone" (very quiet ambient noise) but the synthetic choir sound is to my ears a very important piece of music of this show, and contributes greatly to the feeling of wonder that watching slowmo footage gives me. Anyway, huge thanks for showing your workflow!

We love "Synthetic Design 2", it's already the official song of the channel. I specially love the fact that, in Planet Slow Mo, there's an orchestral version of it
The "synthetic design 02" is like your, The Slow Mo Guys, signature sound because to me it sounds perfect during ALL of your slow shots. I've always liked that sound because to me it is a "I'm immersed in this very slow shot" kinda feel. Also the 'slow down" sound is another signature sound. Awesome work Gav. I know I'm late to the party but I am just now watching this video. Keep up the awesome work and hopefully Dan can get on a plane soon and get back to the USA and film together again!
How different would the main channel be without Gav's perfectionism that he actually achieves for every video. He just described some of the most extensive, well-thought-of sound design on any TH-cam channel as "I just wing it"
I mean, honestly, that's kind of what all Foley is. You take a clip that has no sound, then just mess around until you find a sound that your brain goes "yeah, that's what that sounds like." Try this; pull up two videos. One of bacon sizzling and another of rain on concrete. Mute the rain video, play them both at the same time, but just stare at the rain video. It won't take too long until your brain will just hear rain.
Synthetic Design 02 is honestly so calming to me, I've been watching slo mo guys videos since they came out, and they really help me with my mental and physical illnesses, and that sound has been part of my safety net for years, please never get rid of synthetic design 02 it is my coping mechanism
Pleeaaaasse no other backgeound slow mo sound, this one has become a sort of trade mark of your channel. If I hear that sound anywhere I instantly think: "uuhh slow mo guys, I like"
This video did not take away any of the magic you guys do with each one. I truly enjoyed hearing you nerd out about sound. And the purring ? Killed me. Cheers Gav and Dan!
Knowing this info now, I cannot even describe the level or respect, awe and wonder that Gavin puts into those videos. Not that I hated any of the editing before but it's a whole new caliber of appreciation that I didn't know existed lol. Simply amazing!
Another vote to keep SynthDesign2. It is the sound I expect to hear when I watch your videos. It is your signature sound. It is comfort. It is peace. It is the sound of home. It perfectly compliments the raw beauty of your shots. I've learned to anticipate it, even when you pitch it up and down for variable speed edits.
And this is why it annoys me when people say Gavin isn’t smart. This is so incredibly brilliant, and the fact that he puts so much effort into videos, finds a sound for every single thing that is going on, things some people won’t even notice, is insane to me. Bloody well done. It’s amazing.
He’s very smart. He just can’t communicate his ideas clearly sometimes. Which ends up being funny by the way he phrases it. Which still ends up being good content.
I like how every time he says something like "I just felt that it'd sound like this" or "I wanted it sound like this" and everyone, literally millions of people like every single pick of a sound he makes
I love the synthetic design sound in your vids. It’s very relaxing..not sure how to describe it otherwise. I love the “slow down” sound, too. Amazing amount of work that goes into every second of every video. I had no idea. Thank you.
So according to Gavin's everyday calendar, he's done something once a month, but he skipped it in September, and done it twice in October. I wonder what it was.... but Simone would be proud.
Just compared it to the main channel release dates and it does in fact line up perfectly. Hadn't realized that a bunch of videos released on consecutive 18ths. Shame it doesn't show the future.
The Synthetic Design 02 on 50% is seriously part of why I love The Slow Mo Guys channel. It's got that awe-inspiring epic and ambient feeling that matches up so well with the fantastic and unique footage that you're producing. You could make something new, but please never get rid of it. Cheers
Yup! Gav did not realize yet that his simple solution for the gaps became the signature sound of their channel. Wishing that he'd make a soundtrack based on it and put it on spotify.
When I started getting more into sound design a couple years ago I was blown away at how important it was, and how quickly it can take a project from "ehhh, it's passable" to "this is now fantastic." I took a film making class a couple years ago as an elective, and one of our assignments was "Polish a Turd," IE: We were given a bunch of really crap footage, with horrible acting, and a very loose narrative. We were told to edit it together in any way we saw fit to make it better. Most people focused purely on the sequences and cutting together of the shots, but me and 1 other guy put a lot of effort into the sound and ended up making the two best and most cohesive versions.
Your sound design was so good and fitting that it didn't even come to my mind that these couldn't actually be the original sounds. Now I can appreciate much better all the work that goes into a Slow Mo Guys video.
I have to say that the sound design in the blowing up computer video just blew my mind. The impact that sound created was just awesome. It just shows how great a filmmaker you are. That video is still one of my favourites
We need a T-shirt with a guy holding up his hands in a holy manner with "Synthetic Design 2" above him in holy lights. That's how iconic and amazing that sound is lol
The ultimate flex, showing us how he does his job knowing full well someone could try and replicate his work. Really highlights the genuine intent to share knowledge at the core of Slow Mo Guys.
B.T. Express let’s be honest, who else is gonna spend 9 hours on sound design for a video? People can try and replicate it, but without the hard work and dedication, it will show it’s no competitor.
In all my time watching the Slow Mo Guys, I've never noticed this was edited. You've done an amazing job masking the lack of sound over the years, great job!
@Benjamin McCann but it doesn't cost us money which is the main thing. TH-cam is a good way to teach as it's free for us but the adverts give them money. I just think the human race would be more advanced if the government of every country put some money into some nation wide youtube videos so you didn't have to buy books for education. It would be easier than paying so many teachers. And I know theres the flaw that not everyone has the internet. Anyway, what I meant by my comment is that Gav is teaching in a good way and effectively giving it away for free but others may try to profit off of this information that you say is well known and not really a secret by making people pay for the service
I have to say that the synthetic design sound used is pretty iconic for this channel. It gives us that wonderful feeling of drama and awe and wonder from watching this slow motion action. Well done!
Never realised how much detail and effort was put into sound in all of your videos. This video made me appreciate that a whole lot more. Awesome work guys!
This is all I ever wanted to hear!!! The background music had been fascinating me a lot through all of your videos and hearing the "background story" of it is awesome!!! I knew that the audio in slow mo footage is not real (as in recorded there and slowed down) but this video is still very exciting to watch! Thank you!!!
I hope people now realise how much effort Gav puts into all these videos and he's not just the guy who presses record while Dan does the dangerous stuff.
I knew there was always a lot of work in these videos, but seeing it happening is mental. Massive amount of effort Gav, thanks for investing the time into it mate.
Gav I've learnt so much from you. Your videos on how cameras, focus etc work literally made me go out, buy a DSLR camera and a bunch of lenses and taught me DSLR photography from zero pre-existing knowledge. I hope you know this video will do the same for sound designers, editors etc. You are incredibly generous with your knowledge and an exceptional teacher!
I remember a couple years back when you explained how you got the background noise by using a slowed down choir effect! Such hard work doing slow motion. Way to keep up the hard work
that part where you showed the rubber balloon splitting and the sound only coming in a few seconds later really hammers into my head how sound travels way slower than the speed of light, i love it a lot. i also realized sound comes in waves, and slowing down waves is basically just stretching them. at slow enough speeds it would just be a kinda flat looking wave and thats why all the different tones and highs and lows kinda just meld into one clump. i guess this is obvious to everyone else, but i feel like i just learned something new, even if i already knew it in my brain beforehand!
The incredible amount of tweaking and tuning that video editing takes is mind blowing. Add in the effort that it takes to come up with most of your videos sound on the fly. Sound is something that most people take for granted not having to get or edit. Bravo, Gavin.
Despite your statement about this not being a tutorial, and being just the way you do it, this is exactly how I do sound design! Listening for qualities within individual sounds that you can imagine working to picture, being able to hear in your head how it'll sound pitched down or stretched just by previewing it, layering the absolute f out of stuff, and a bunch of trial and error! Your work is absolutely instinctive, and it's encouraging to know that there's somebody that works in precisely the same way as I do! Great stuff man. You could probably stand to give Pro Tools a try, as that's what I use, and it gives you a lot more flexibility mix-wise, plus plugins, but you do such a great job with Final Cut, it doesn't seem necessary!
I love that the ICONIC SlowMo guys music that’s in the background of every video is just some random clip from the internet from 10 years ago slowed down. Please don’t change it! Or if you do, get someone to compose something new using it!
I figured some sounds were fake but never realized how many. Absolutely mad amount of effort and skill and brilliance go into that. The attention to detail to the beautiful shots and added sounds, like the shot of the ball rolling across the rail. Absolutely mind blowing. Mad respect for all the videos. Even the wobling of the pinball decor whle you were explaining that it has to sound "wobly" in slowmo, my brian was like "No! That's definitely how it actually sounds"
Has anyone ever actually complained about the audio being synthesized? Is this the approach that theatrical slo-mo sound design takes as well? I remember you describing the ambient sound you made and it''s become iconic with the channel at this point lol
16:50 A sound that i never heard and that i actually do not really appreticate 17:11 A sound that i am familiar with that is slow, calm, relaxing and could probably listen the whole 2 minutes of it without anything added to it.
Please never change you're background noise filler noise. Its part of slow mo guys in my head in a way that truly brings me comfort in every one of your videos. Change up however else, but that sound and the slow mo guys attitude is immutable
Being a long time listener of the RT Podcast, its cool to see you finally have the time to do these projects that you've been wanting to make and explain for so long, like this and the Blu Ray idea. Keep killin it Gav! I'd love to see you do something with Demolition Ranch in the future because you're both in Texas. BTW, love the hair
I never really thought of it, but when I saw the video title I went "That makes sense." But I never knew how much of it was added later on. Like for fire and explosions, specifically the ignition sound you mentioned, I thought those were real. But in the example of the cd shattering, I figured that had additional sound effects added for the pieces shattering on the cinder blocks.
Honestly, the fake sounds always bothered me a bit, but now that you've justified them, I don't think they will anymore. And that background audio? Don't ever change it-it's become a cool sound in itself, because I associate it with the cool visuals.
Do a collaboration with him. Maybe then some people would understand that you replace the sound. Random person: damn this fireball sounds exactly like the song memories... ...so catchy
I figured something like this was the case, but hearing you go into detail about it makes me appreciate just how much effort it takes to make your videos. That must be one of the main reasons why you guys are so popular; your production quality is second to none.
Gavin Free, you are one of the most talented and dedicated nerds I have ever had the honor to witness. Thank you for your detailed explanation of your sound design methods and execution. Thank you very, very much for your dedication to such tedious and lengthy procedures. They exquisitely enhance the videos.
Holly cow!!! I have a deeper appreciation for the work you put into the editing. Your videos aren't just slow motion. It's "ART". I didn't realize how many audio layers you put in your work. Just awesome. Thanks for all the work.
Gavin has talked about this in 10s of Videos across slow mo guys videos, RT Podcasts, and RTX panels. A large portion of the audience hasn’t seen other things Gavin has done and are just here for the visuals. Unfortunately it’s doubtful they are watching this video on the second channel
I just assumed it was at least half fake. Didn’t realize it was quite this much... but I just chose to ignore that and treat it as real in my mind while watching.
These comments are the perfect combination of “Well obviously we knew that” and “Wow, I had no idea” 😂

"Synthetic Design 2" is how you know you're watching a Slow Mo Guys video.
I've been waiting for Gav to flex his sound design for idk how many years now, and it was even better than I could imagine.
How different would the main channel be without Gav's perfectionism that he actually achieves for every video. He just described some of the most extensive, well-thought-of sound design on any TH-cam channel as "I just wing it"
I mean, honestly, that's kind of what all Foley is. You take a clip that has no sound, then just mess around until you find a sound that your brain goes "yeah, that's what that sounds like."
Try this; pull up two videos.
The fact that he has Simone Giertz's every day calender 😌
I noticed that right off...
Pleeaaaasse no other backgeound slow mo sound, this one has become a sort of trade mark of your channel. If I hear that sound anywhere I instantly think: "uuhh slow mo guys, I like"
I'm leaving you for Synthetic Design 2.
:o
I'm Genuinely Surprised that its the actual Meg Commenting and Not a Spoof Account. LMAO
I’m surprised that not only is this the real meg it’s her first comment on this channel
huge if true
Why aren’t you verified?
This video did not take away any of the magic you guys do with each one. I truly enjoyed hearing you nerd out about sound. And the purring ? Killed me. Cheers Gav and Dan!
Your sound editing is spot on! 💪 well done
This kind of stuff is why you’re not just two guys with a fancy camera
Knowing this info now, I cannot even describe the level or respect, awe and wonder that Gavin puts into those videos. Not that I hated any of the editing before but it's a whole new caliber of appreciation that I didn't know existed lol. Simply amazing!
Another vote to keep SynthDesign2. It is the sound I expect to hear when I watch your videos. It is your signature sound. It is comfort. It is peace. It is the sound of home. It perfectly compliments the raw beauty of your shots. I've learned to anticipate it, even when you pitch it up and down for variable speed edits.
I see you have Simone Giertz’s calendar in the back
That’s the first thing I noticed!
Snap haha
I spotted it seventeen and half seconds into the vid ;)
Was wondering who else would notice that lol
Legit just commented about the calendar, I need one.
Synthetic Design 02 is iconic. Never change it - it’s perfect
Which still ends up being good content.
of course he is. but he himself embraces the sillier side, just look at his gameplay videos, completely different gavin.
@@jrstoelting Intelligence and poor communication skills often coincide. That's my experience.
No one says that lol
I like how every time he says something like "I just felt that it'd sound like this" or "I wanted it sound like this" and everyone, literally millions of people like every single pick of a sound he makes
I love the synthetic design sound in your vids. It’s very relaxing..not sure how to describe it otherwise. I love the “slow down” sound, too. Amazing amount of work that goes into every second of every video. I had no idea. Thank you.
So according to Gavin's everyday calendar, he's done something once a month, but he skipped it in September, and done it twice in October. I wonder what it was.... but Simone would be proud.
It lines up with release dates on Slow Mo Guys videos. There was none in September.
Just compared it to the main channel release dates and it does in fact line up perfectly. Hadn't realized that a bunch of videos released on consecutive 18ths. Shame it doesn't show the future.
Wow, that was my first hunch but I couldn't be bothered to double check, cheers!
This is one of the best sound design workshops I've ever seen. It's just as good as your exposure and focus one.
When I started getting more into sound design a couple years ago I was blown away at how important it was, and how quickly it can take a project from "ehhh, it's passable" to "this is now fantastic."
I took a film making class a couple years ago as an elective, and one of our assignments was "Polish a Turd," IE: We were given a bunch of really crap footage, with horrible acting, and a very loose narrative. We were told to edit it together in any way we saw fit to make it better. Most people focused purely on the sequences and cutting together of the shots, but me and 1 other guy put a lot of effort into the sound and ended up making the two best and most cohesive versions.
Duality of Men (Film school)
The best designs are the ones we don't notice. The fact that no one points out the fake sounds is a testament of how good your sound design is.
Rewatching some old Slow Mo Guys videos and came across this one, and I noticed Gav has one of Simone's Every Day Calendars! That's awesome!
Don't change the background sound. it is such a recognizable "SLOW MO GUYS" sound.
We’ve got Greebo Gavin back, we just need “Sports Cabinet” Dan back now.
Just noticed the Simone Giertz Everyday Calendar in the background
when i think of slow mo, that "synthetic design 02" sound comes to my mind, so yeah it's pretty iconic
The synthetic choir at specifically 50% legit makes me happy to hear. It *means* Slo Mo Guys.
Your sound design was so good and fitting that it didn't even come to my mind that these couldn't actually be the original sounds. Now I can appreciate much better all the work that goes into a Slow Mo Guys video.
I remember gavin talking about this in a Q and A a couple of years ago, but hey I mean it eeeees what it eeeees
Me too. I can’t remember the video tho
i think he only scratched the surface at that qna, this time is far more indepth
Yup! I've always thought about it when i watch the videos, that the audio is always great & I appreciate the work behind it!
It eeeees what it eeeees.
I believe you meant you say, "eat ease watt eat ease".
the backround music in the slo mo things are so relaxing and when I try to search to find the noise I CANT
I gotcha buddy th-cam.com/video/6XjFDmGSYpQ/w-d-xo.html
@Benjamin McCann Oh, cool.
You should see Louis Rossmann then lmao
In all my time watching the Slow Mo Guys, I've never noticed this was edited. You've done an amazing job masking the lack of sound over the years, great job!
It feels so bad leaning all this stuff without paying any money. It's like a magician is revealing all his tricks.
@Benjamin McCann doesn't stop people from trying to get money for teaching people about it
@Benjamin McCann but it doesn't cost us money which is the main thing.
That slow mo choir sound is iconic now. Don't change it Gav.
I have to say that the synthetic design sound used is pretty iconic for this channel. It gives us that wonderful feeling of drama and awe and wonder from watching this slow motion action. Well done!
To be honest, it's even more amazing now that I know that all sounds are added after recording. Massive respect.
Never realised how much detail and effort was put into sound in all of your videos. This video made me appreciate that a whole lot more.
Awesome work guys!
So glad to see the communitys shared love for Synthetic Design 02. Absolute staple of this channel ❤
Slo mo guys: most of our sound is fake
OG viewers: tell me something I don’t know
Me lmao
Yup I remember a similar video a while back
OG viewers: [waiting for the choir clip]
Dont be a gate keeper, make them smarter every day
@@alex0589 Putting fake sfx instead of the original isn't that smart
"Synthetic Design 02" merch, please 😆
Gav I've learnt so much from you. Your videos on how cameras, focus etc work literally made me go out, buy a DSLR camera and a bunch of lenses and taught me DSLR photography from zero pre-existing knowledge. I hope you know this video will do the same for sound designers, editors etc. You are incredibly generous with your knowledge and an exceptional teacher!
"If you've watched all slow mo guys videos." you almost make it sound like that isn't a normal thing to do...
Gavin looks like he did when he was 14 and joined the RT site...
We've come full circle
14 y/o grizzly Adams.

It's the Internet, friend. Every possible thing has been complained about. www.ftrain.com/wwic
@@CyclingGeo Hahahahha you can't be serious. Most people don't realise? Surely most people don't even realise the tooth fairy isn't real.
16:50 A sound that i never heard and that i actually do not really appreticate
17:11 A sound that i am familiar with that is slow, calm, relaxing and could probably listen the whole 2 minutes of it without anything added to it.
I bet a zipper opening/closing would make a good effect for the balloon ripping & velcro would be interesting for embers crackling.
Honestly, the fake sounds always bothered me a bit, but now that you've justified them, I don't think they will anymore.
And that background audio? Don't ever change it-it's become a cool sound in itself, because I associate it with the cool visuals.
Why is David Guetta talking to me about slow motion
LMFAO
Why wouldn't he? :D
Gavin's everyday calendar looks like he did something never.
Looks like his monthly upload schedule
I found you. Now I just need to find the wizard The scroll and the cane.
He marks the days where he gave a fck

Gavin Free, you are one of the most talented and dedicated nerds I have ever had the honor to witness. Thank you for your detailed explanation of your sound design methods and execution. Thank you very, very much for your dedication to such tedious and lengthy procedures. They exquisitely enhance the videos.
Holly cow!!! I have a deeper appreciation for the work you put into the editing. Your videos aren't just slow motion. It's "ART". I didn't realize how many audio layers you put in your work. Just awesome. Thanks for all the work.
Wait, did people not know this? I thought he’s talked about before about how much time he spends editing in the sounds
He has but this is more of a break down of the technical stuff
yeah but it was years ago when they were filming in Dan’s garden
Gavin has talked about this in 10s of Videos across slow mo guys videos, RT Podcasts, and RTX panels. A large portion of the audience hasn’t seen other things Gavin has done and are just here for the visuals. Unfortunately it’s doubtful they are watching this video on the second channel
I just assumed it was at least half fake. Didn’t realize it was quite this much... but I just chose to ignore that and treat it as real in my mind while watching.
