A way to save money and not have the issue with breaking lines: take a cheap bolo rod, put on an old reel and done. That way you can also use thin leaders for a better bite rate and if something bigger bites (typically chubs), it just takes a bit to get it out.

Keep your rod pointed directly at the fish. The fish will eventually tire and you can slowly bring it in with a cheap Telestick. I have done with my bamboo stick...
