      It will be strange but it will also mean we are free to go back to normal again. We have a slight easing of lockdown so Finn had a riding lesson today, first in 11 weeks and we visited our grandparents and had socially distanced cakes in the garden, also first visit in over 10 weeks.

    Great video there kids! It’s strange (to me) that silage is not going in a silo. But, that must be the Wisconsin farmer in me 😉. Say, who was that in that silver truck that was pulling the beautiful piece of APPLETON STEEL????? Was it the hair blown Craigie Boy and his sidekick? Or, was it the world famous The Hoof GP and the bus fare boy 😂🤣Lol! Thanks for the smile today. Cheers from 🍎ton 🇺🇸!

Day 5 finished chopping by lunch and it took the whole afternoon to put the sheet on. So 5 days in total. We were lucky it was dry the whole 5 days, most years we have rained off days in between!

      Fermenting has been a natural way of preserving foods for millennia, for us humans. I don’t know the history of Silage. Perhaps another edition of ‘Farming Files’ could tell us? There are many advantages, but one of the biggest is the natural probiotics which build up as fermentation processes are underway. This is very good for mammalian digestion.

    • @FarmingFiles
      @FarmingFiles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mike, good question. We aren’t 100% sure of the answer but we do know that we very rarely have weather here on the west coast of Scotland which allows hay making. It usually rains a LOT here so hay is tricky whereas silage just needs 24-48 hours before chopping it. The weather window is much easier for silage. It’s also very expensive to make bales compared to silage the way we make it. Much cheaper to put it in the pit and much more nutritious but we have a cow nutritionalist who comes every month ( he hasn’t been in person since lockdown) and we’ll ask him 👍🏻

    Did you tell us how much Silage you use in a year or did I miss that ?

    • @FarmingFiles
      @FarmingFiles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Malcolm, we use whatever we produce that year, if we have a bigger crop like this year it saves us buying in other things like potatoes and brewers grains to supplement the lack of silage. We had two very wet years and poor silage crops and it cost a lot more to feed the cows those years as we had to buy in silage from nearby farms and other supplementary feeds. It also took a couple of years for the fields to get back to normal.
