    I was always under the assumption (guess watching too many movies about these ships) that there were flooding lamps at the base of the funnels aimed up illuminating the funnels. Even in Titanic (1997) during the sinking it showed the funnels lit from the bottom.

    What color did you do the bottom of the hill in? I have a large scale Titanic that I bought when I was a teenager. I started the kit several years ago and painted it red and black. It didn't look right so I boxed it back up and it is sitting in my collection to this day because I have not been able to find the right color for below the water line. Anyway great build as always. Love your channel. Have watched your Enterprise builds several times.

    • @TrekWorks
      @TrekWorks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a custom mixed color, really quite simple. I just took some regular red and added a few drops of black at a time until I thought it looked right. It's painted with craft paints you can buy at Walmart or hobby Lobby.

    @TREKWORKS looks good I see things are moving right along I thought I read somewhere that R.M.S. stood for royal mail service ? or did stand for something else ? just curious how's things going with the starship Enterprise ? is it on hold while your working on this stay the course Bruce

    • @TrekWorks
      @TrekWorks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am doing some work on the big Enterprise. Right now it's the boring and tedious stuff like drilling and filing open all of the windows which goes really slowly. I'll be posting an update on it pretty soon when it gets to some of the interesting stuff.

    • @TrekWorks

      RMS stood for Royal Mail Steamer. It was a term set forth by the British Admiralty. Ships carrying that designation had to meet certain standards. One of which was speed. At the time of the Lusitania, Titanic etc, the minimum speed requirement was 21 knots. There were only a handful of ships at that time that could cruise that fast.

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TrekWorks It should also be pointed out that the other common designation for ships was "SS" for "Steam Ship." It was proper to call these ships with an "SS" prefix.
      When Britannic, the last of the Olympic Class ships finally steamed, she did NOT go into service as a Royal Mail Steamer. She was pressed into service in World War I (1915) as a hospital ship so her designation was "HMHS" standing for "Her/His Majesty's Hospital Ship." Britannic was NEVER fitted out with all her luxury fittings.
      Has Britannic survived World War I, it would have been repainted in the same colors the Olympic and Titanic steamed under AND outfitted with the luxury features that were not installed. As recently as 2007, they found a pipe organ intended for Britannic in Germany!
      ***************
      The Lusitania herself is in VERY bad shape and has been collapsing/accordioning for decades. The people who dived on it said that as late as the 1960s, it was in excellent condition but the elements finally started to break it down badly after the 1980s. There was of course salvaging and probably undocumented looting of the wreck, too.
      Like the Andrea Doria, it's in a bad place of the ocean bottom and is exposed to heavy ocean currents that accelerate its deterioration as well as make it much more dangerous to dive on, too.
      How much of the damage has also been done by authorities or anyone else trying to prove or hide the existence of illegal munitions (which seems to beyond doubt) now is another thing.
      This year (March I think), the Lusitania's wreck was gifted to an Irish maritime museum by the American, Greg Bemis, who owned the wreck since the 1960s. He's 91 now and felt it was time to turn over legal authority. The Irish government had control over access to the wreck anyway since it lies in their waters...

    Looks really good. I wish they'd releae this kit again, they are very hard to find unlike the Titanic. How much do they go for now on average?

      I found one in a second hand goods store for 75 euro about 80 bucks. Original, all parts sealed. On ebay they go way too expensive (Entex, Gunze Sangyo) like 300 bucks and more

  • @stikibunn
    @stikibunn 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question. Are you building it As Built, post Titanic refit or in it's final voyage coloring with the black funnels and buff line and grey superstructure?

    • @TrekWorks
      @TrekWorks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm building it as it appeared in her early years of service. In looking at pictures, it is interesting seeing the different paint schemes she sported over the years finally ending the black funnels and sheer line running the full length of the hull.

    • @stikibunn
      @stikibunn 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TrekWorks It's a more interesting and vibrant look then the black and grey and buff scheme of her last voyage. Nobody's 100% sure they actually repainted it like that either. Equal amounts of people claim it had been repainted as those who said it had not. She was repainted at sea when war was declared, painting her battleship grey but was painted again back to her original colors a few months later when the Admiralty decided that it was too expensive to have coal guzzling ships ad-hocly fitted with guns and returned the big liners to their owners. Accounts say that the ship was painted again in New York. We know for sure that on her last voyage she flew an American flag on the insistence of the mostly American passengers. Perhaps the blackened funnels were supposed to indicate the ship's assumed neutrality. Unfortunately the Germans had stopped following Cruiser Rules.

    • @TrekWorks
      @TrekWorks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right now I have a couple of commissions that I'm finishing. After those I won't be doing any more for awhile and will only be building the 1:350 TOS Enterprise kit's which I'll be offering for sale when I finish each one.
