It's not really about having enough space... the roof would need extensive work or even replacement if we were to keep it around for the long term, and that would cost a fortune. It is sad though.
There is enough space, but the saddledome can't stay up forever. It's roof has a shelf life and we are approaching the end of that shelf life. There was an article in the Herald a couple years ago about a study that an engineering firm did on the saddledome, and they found that the steel cables imbedded in the perimeter of the roof that hold up the roof's tiles are quickly reaching the end of their life. The dome would require significant renovations beyond 2027 anyway. It needs to go and really it should have already been replaced.
Also, the saddledome is an ugly dumpy looking building. I'm glad it's going to be gone for good. It's a massive shit stain on an otherwise beautiful skyline.

I'm going to really miss the 'Dome, so many good memories especially with the Johnny Chuky years recently and dome foams up in press level. Just a great barn, maybe comparable to the 'smells like hockey' feel of the Joe Louis on a smaller scale
Edmontonian and Oiler fan here, glad to see Calgary finally get a new arena after many missteps. It will help Edmonton as well as more entertainers will want to venture up here as there are 2 large arenas that can accommodate todays big concert needs. When I was working, my office was close to Rogers Place and it was fun to see it being built.

The Dome will be missed obviously, it's one of the most iconic buildings in Calgary, but this is more than needed by the Flames and the City of Calgary. Just the Flames dressing room alone was embarrassing when you see what our rivals have just north of us. 2027 can't come soon enough!

Agreed. I don't want the new arena at all. They put millions into the Saddledome getting her ready after the floods in 2013. It's a unique structure that fits Calgary's Stampede motif. I don't plan on ever going to the new arena.

The tinsel roof is not conducive for concerts. Yeah, the Saddledome is an historic building, but it's over 40 years old, and it is dated by today's standards.
I really like this new arena design. I am sad to see the Saddledome go, as it was a bucket list item of mine to see a Flames game in Calgary, but alas i won’t make a trip to Calgary for a few more years.
I know the Saddledome looks like a giant pringle but as a born and raised Calgarian it has always been an iconic landmark of the City. You feel the hype walking up to the building on game nights. It has a very authentic sporting atmosphere and it will be dearly missed. Soo happy that the boys will get a proper dressing room too.
Things I've seen: 1. eight bathrooms on the main concourse (Likely split four for each gender) 2. Three restaurants and one cafe in the food hall. (1 fancy restaurant, 1 regular sit-down, 1 sports bar) 3. Club/Suite entries separate from the concourse so they aren't taking up space like they do in Rogers Place 4. Saddledome Mask is relocated to the Team Store 5. Community Rink is underground with a plaza over top

It's probably just a money thing. The saddledome hosts nhl games, lacrosse, concerts, and of course the stampede. Rogers Place is similar but it just is nowhere near the same level because of the stampede.

Grew up in the city and never got to see a game live in the Gaudreau/Monahan/Tkachuk era. I can't express how depressing that was when the team imploded after the Oilers series. I have 3 years to get back out to the dome from the Okanagan but its unfortunately low on my list of priorities. Watching games live was great for atmosphere but watching the game from my couch is a better hockey viewing experience imo.

It looks good but I just hope it actually turns out as rendered. Rogers place ended up more or less very similar to renderings but they had to change some key elements. Also hope that they don't make the same mistake with washrooms.
Not sure why they would not put the same amount of seats? 1000 (ish) less seats is a LOT of money for 41 home games. Halos they are getting a new building. Going to try my best to get out there to see a game before the new building is done.

So a 51 year old building is "old" ? How many people tear down their homes after 51 years to make for a greater one ? I hope promises will be kept and no property taxes raised. I was in the Saddledome 1 time in my life (after 1999 when I moved to Calgary) for one game and it is unlikely I will ever go into the new one, but who knows. I did not have time to go to the new musical center yet, let alone the new library. Maybe one day. I hope all these will turn out right and not like the 4 car expansion for the CTrain platforms or the Deerfoot Mall "redesign" or the New Horizon Mall . Let's hope the Calgary hockey team will measure up to their new arena and it will be a great host for new upcoming events.

A lot of big bands never played in the saddle dome because of how it affected the acoustics of the sounds. AC/DC is one that’s never been there.

Need a new arena. Ugly as fuck. That Flames motif at the top will not look anywhere near the rendering. Oh and Cana is involved. Not a chance this building comes in on budget. They built the Saddledome and had massive cost overruns.

Not a fan of the new arena. The Dome has character, this looks like every generic modern corporate building. Plus the Dome getting torn down, not a fan for sure.
