    I used a diy two layer fabric pop filter made from my wifes stocking and a 3D printed frame. It works. But when i got a more fancy mic (Blue Spark SL) i wanted a more pro look of the gear. And i got an Alctron mpf02. Its a 2 layer plastic mesh that is also shape formed. Works great. Check it out

    Mic technique. 👍🏻
    If you’re using the mic for speaking, I think you can get by without a filter. If you’re using the mic for singing, you MAY benefit from one. It all depends on your technique. As far as speaking, I was a professional radio DJ for years! I never used a pop filter. I just angled the mic off axis. There are other tricks you can do (e.g. certain letter pronunciations) that can also minimize or eliminate plosives.

    I have a Stedman metal screen. The Neumann TLM102 is subject to popping, but the screen is also there to protect the mic from spray. (Eewwww!) When you pay major dollar for a mic, you want to shield it, especially if you have guests in the studio using it. During the pandemic - and after - disinfecting a metal screen is easy... just wipe it with alcohol. That said, yes, exercise good mic technique even with the screen. Filters can produce a buzziness with hard plosives. Oh, and trying to read a script through a black screen can give me "Pirate Patch" Eye after a long session.

    Great answer. It isn't cut and dry, but mic technique does significantly eliminate plosives.

      @GadesChannel ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, if you record yourself, you can excercise and get the good technique to avoid plosives. But if you are a podcaster and have some "unprepared" guests, you need to be ready for "pops", so you should have pop-filter or good windshield for them ;)

    for condensor and ribbons yes, dynamics no. the off-axis thing is on cost of fidelity and also the popscreen is preventing spit. also they help with distance. i use layer over layer and a meter or so distance bc i am mad loud and i ssssibliance like daffy duck. wet and windy.

    (!!) Crucial detail most all pop and non-pop people miss: your mic may be directional , but your mouth (voice) is not as directional. So...if you mic is pointed at your mouth's center, but your mouth is pointed away from the mic, the voice is clear and there is almost no pop. Try it.
    This explains both camps. That being said, when I use an SDC (small diam. condenser), I add a metal mesh pop-filter. Super-clear. In singing, mouth position and a higher low-pass freq. (150--200Hz) are usually used. For voiceover, you want everything. Different apps.

    • @harambo88
      @harambo88 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      you still loose frequencys also if you planed to use a dynamic you cant make use of the proximity effect. it works but it is just an bandaid. i need, use my mouthsounds as part of my expression.

    I usually keep the pop filter about 5 inches away from the mic as a rule. I never have ANY pop filter touching the mic. Now, I have a question. I just saw a video where the host said he heard that that same metal pop filter can cause MORE sibilance because it's metal. Have you found this to be the case at all or no?
