To really improve you need 3 types of sparing opponents. Someone who can destroy you, Someone you can destroy, and someone about your level. You will learn different things from each.

"Spar with people that are less skilled" has really hit a chord! I'm getting hammered week in, week out sparring with far more experienced fighters in an attempt to get better. Never occurred to go with less experienced guys to try out stuff before now.

This is a wonderful bro-mance developing. It's so beautiful it almost brings a tear to my eye. ALMOST.
In all seriousness, thank you for these vids with hard2hurt. I am a head instructor at a class, and I break these things down for our students and black belts alike. The methods and philosophy I'm picking up from are things I immediately turn around and teach in many cases.
THANK YOU! You are enriching my life and the lives of our students.

Be adapted with sparring .. go light and fun but also find that person that you can pad up and go hard on occasion to train the brain the be comfortable under stress and heavy pressure.. don't be afraid to throw hard in a controlled environment..

    Thank you guys.
As a southpaw the one thing that becomes apparent is that you are a minority in the fight game. I am not a secretive dude but, I do reserve tricks and methods of training specifically for southpaws. Having said that, if we must cross a conventional fighters center (moving to the left) the foot work and torso position is crutial to avoid the straight right. For both the southpaw and conventional fighter the rear hand must be the measure for the leed leg round kick. Jab over the opponents jab as you position the leed foot on the outside of your opponents leed foot. Slip opponents left jab to your right with a small step on the right foot and throw the right upper cut (do not do this standing in front of your opponent), this is a slip counter. Your foot should control the out side. People don't expect a southpaw to hook well. Double up hooks from body to head. Use the straight left to the body to get there. Consult and practice.
Thank you again for sharing. It makes an old fighter feal bit younger. Keep up the good work.

When it comes to getting good at everything the other issue is not losing things you are already good at. Like I remember a Nak Muay talking about how she has to circle her training. Since she will be focusing on specific things like making her elbows or punches better but then she needs to circle back around to her kicks so that they don't start getting worst. Another example is the difference between American/Freestyle Karate and American Style Kickboxing. They are very similar with the sideways stance, blitz movement, and heavy use of the lead hand/leg. But they differ in that American Karate will be better at that type of fighting than the American Style Kickboxer but the American Style Kickboxer will be much better at fighting in the pocket and using combinations then the American/Freestyle Karate Stylist.

The whole south paw vs orthodox outside lead foot position battle is important because it lines up your shoulder with your opponents head making the rear hand straight way easier.
Saying the "open vs open" stance means one guy can attack and the other can't is ridiculous... it's literally equal for both guys. Just because his foot it outside yours doesn't mean hes not gunna get side kicked. Or teeped. A bunch of Spinning techniques work with inside foot position or at least stepping across into an inside foot position.
And you can still get check hooked and jabed to death if you have the out side foot position.

@@metrolinamartialarts broad question...an agreed situation in which two guys try to hurt or submit the other until the other one quits.
You can make it into a semantic discussion but I'm just saying I need to see a lot more high pressure sparring for me to believe you can actually do this. I'm just some rando on the internet so I can understand if you don't give a shit of course, but most of what I see is tricks and little actual fighting capability. A good but unfair comparison is Jeff Chan, he has tons of high level sparring on his channel, so his ability is beyond doubt. Of course, he is also superconditioned so that comparison may be unfair. But yeah. No offense meant. I'm just not convinced.

I’m in the really good at one thing but sucky at everything else camp, which is kinda strange compared to my personality because I have such eclectic interests. I’ve always been a boxer and done a little kickboxing but I’m trying to get into grappling arts now. I find them so much less intuitive than striking which I got really good at really early (relative to my peers). I guess it’s just human nature to strengthen your strengths and double down on what you’re already good at/interested in, but I think this is a problem if the goal is to be a complete martial artist or even just have a complete human experience.
