I have to say, in 2023, this is still hilarious. There are several recordings and remakes out there where this great song is given justice, but this little gem is fun and I'm glad we have both versions to enjoy.
@johniwuh9316: Unfortunately, as soon as the British Invasion came along, the Everlys were considered yesterday’s news. They were pigeonholed as a 50s nostalgia act which was unfortunate. Anyone who has ever listened to some of their albums from the mid-60s and beyond and the 3 albums they released in the 80s, knows that they were definitely not a 50s nostalgia act. They didn’t have a good manager either and in later years no manager at all so there was no one pushing for them. They had an amazing song in 1984 that Paul McCartney wrote for them (“On The Wings Of A Nightingale”) and the song went nowhere. At least they got some peer recognition in the 1980s with their induction into the RRHoF and their Star on Hollywood Boulevard.
@@johnr8820 Paul McCartney stated that he and John Lennon were envious of the harmonies the Everly Brothers had and tried to come as close to them as possible with their harmonies.
Seriously? They were great but not on the same level as the Beatles. The Beatles hit it just right with their timing. The Everly’s were a little late. Could they have been as big as the Beatles… maybe. Their creativity was not at the same level as the Beatles. Don’t get me wrong, I loved their music.
What a riot! Ha! I’ve seen them sing this song elsewhere and always think about this particular comedy routine...brilliantly pulled off. Phil’s laugh just makes it perfect! I understand he & Terance were best of friends. Great memories made that night I would imagine. 🌼
Phil made it possible for Terry and his wife, Shiela to get green cards to live here in the states, where they did for many years. Terrance is now living back in london. That's the late Tulsa drummer, Jimmy Karstein on drums.
@@sammccue500 I see, interesting to read! Al "Tiny" Schneider said that the Everly´s weren´t to happy with their drummer in the late 60´s ("he wasn´t working out"), that´s why they ended up hiring Al. He must have been talking abut Jimmy Karstein then.
Seems most of us enjoyed ourselves watching these two extremely handsome brothers…loved listening to their incredibly gorgeous voices and exquisite harmonies…and had a good laugh at some great dry humour from Don. Those who didn’t just prove you can’t please everyone all the time. For me, this cabaret shows Don’s versatility in particular. Loved this video, and the whole cabaret elsewhere on TH-cam.
@judyward5341: This video never fails to make me laugh. Don’s comedic timing is perfect. And despite the silliness, they still sing the song so beautifully.
@@cak813 You’re so right. Incredibly perfect harmonising despite the distraction. And for me, Don never looked more appealingly handsome. What a heartbreaker!
@@rogerturner5504 Yes, that's a beautiful and rare bass, I own a new Non-Reverse T-Bird, but that thing is just beautiful. I love the sunburst Gibsons anyway.
Then this will break your heart. Not long after this show, Terry's strap button came loose, the headstock hit the deck, and the neck snapped off and was swinging on the strings when Phil walked over and said "Did it go out of tune, Terrence?😂
I get it that this performance was in a night club and yes it's funny and all, but this period had to be a low point in the Everly Brothers career. Trying to be the Smothers Brothers just didn't get it for me. Terry Slater, the goofy bass player, is actually a very talented musician and song writer,
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but you're dead wrong about them "trying to be" anything but what they were. Two great country boys who were great singers and could rock as hard as the rest. ."Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. @@sammccue500 My opinion sure, but it stuck me that in this particular video they were trying too hard to do SHTICK. But again that's just me. Love the Everly Brothers music.
I expect the folks got a bunch of great songs plus this one with the goofing around. Bad luck if this happened to be the song someone was most looking forward to.
Everyone adores this song, but obviously Don and Phil enjoyed goofing around with it too. After performing for years, they likely got bored doing every song straight up, so they decided to have fun with it. They did a fair amount of “schtick” in their shows during this period which eventually landed them their TV show. They were stellar musicians and all around performers.
That was a routine, I saw them years ago and think with all the sad songs they had, they used comedy to try to keep it light although yes, that is a great tune.

No one will come close to Everly Brothers 🎉

I still don't understand why these guys were not more popular than the Beatles.

The Beatles were huge Everly fans though and it’s obvious

Great stuff, anyone notice the sunburst Les Paul the backing guitarist has?
I tell you what's more notable. The Non-reverse Thunderbird Bass.
