Roquesteron is located 55km away from Nice, on the left bank of the river Estéron. As early as 2000 years ago, the Ligurian tribe "the Velauni" occupied the area. Then came the Romans, who built the Roman Way that connected Vence to Castellane.
Over the centuries, the village clinging to the side of the rock that dominates the Estéron on the right bank descended towards the river, crossed it (probably from the 15th century), and little by little, the cultivated left bank suburb became covered with buildings.
At the end of the 17th century, with the help of a demographic boom and political calm, rich bourgeois families built houses there. In 1739, 333 inhabitants lived on the left bank, 87 in the "Old City" on the right bank.
From the 19th century onward, Roquesteron follows the common evolution of many villages around Nice: modernizations, poverty and rural exodus, and finally the appearance of tourism.
