Efficiency, yep! A bike which is bouncing all over the place can "feel" fast, but, usually, a smooth ride (which might "feel" slower) is faster. Thinking back to the early days of full suspension bikes in XC racing, only actual testing (lap times vs. power) proved that for most courses, a fully was actually faster. Note in gravel, when putting down the power over rough ground, when you hit bumps you sometimes get bucked from the saddle-it is annoying, and can prevent one from getting the power down. Something like the Trek Iso-speed might make a difference in this, without too much complexity (and weight). There is a lot of room for optimizing for efficiency...
