- James O'Brien has been waiting for this moment for a very long time...and doesn't quite know what to do.
"I feel hope."
The Labour Party have won the 2024 General Election in the biggest turnaround in British electoral history. The Conservatives have avoided an extinction level event, but have fallen to their worst defeat in their entire existence. It's everything James O'Brien has ever wanted. So what now..?

I think people need to be realistic. The damage the Tories have done to the country is both serious and extensive. It is not going to be fixed quickly, perhaps not within this term of parliament.. The Labour government are going to have to make some hard decisions, and it's not always going to be easy. We aren't out of the woods yet, but I am hopeful.

So true. The corrupt Tories spent 14 years bringing the country to its knees so anyone expecting a Labour government that inherits such a legacy to fix things in just one term in office is engaged in wishful thinking.
👍🏻well said
You'll always blame the Tories for your failings no matter what, today, tomorrow, when you're old
I think you need to be more realistic. Labour are committed to the same austerity, fiscal drag, corporate prioritization, and culture wars, that have made the last 14 years so unbearable. And with the Tories in opposition and the youth vote going far-right, Labour have no reason to stray from that path.
I give it 2 weeks then the Press will be blaming labour for the past 14years of tory rule.
They won’t need to look back that far. They will have 2 weeks of carnage to talk about.

I'm just so relieved this is now over, and now this country can get back on track. What's most important to me now is that we now have a new Government that will give hope to the likes of my Grandchildren, their future is what's important to me, that we give them a nation to be proud of and the opportunites that they deserve. A decent education, health service, job security and a pension at the end of their working lives, and the same for their children and grandchildren. Congratulations to Sir Kier Starmer, his team and the Labour Party. I wish them all well as they begin the unenviable task of putting right all that has been done to this country and it's people.
yeah, none of that will happen
@T.E.S.S. - don't be so pessimistic. You put up with 14 years of arrogance, lying and looking out for the richest 1% of the country so you can at least give Starmer a chance. The wrongs done to the UK cannot be undone in a day, in fact, not even a year.
@@T.E.S.S.Cynical?

Terryman1341 did no research before voting Labour then if he wants a better country for his grandchildren LOL.
When the new elected labour Prime Minister goes to the King to ask to form a government, i hope the king can speak up for the homeless poor and destitute and that the new prime minister will end homelessness once and for all we are only a few months away before winter comes
That's the Tory Mess and Labour will fix it.
winter is coming
There's nobody more insulated from reality than the Royal family ffs.

@@IRSH-sy5jn I believe homelessness is managed by local authorities, I was homeless back in December, I managed to get shelter food and eventually accommodation, it took 5 weeks but it was all supplied by voluntary Christian organisations and the local council
What's the difference. These days Labour is just a bunch of Tories without Tory money.
but did you vote ?
@@randomname5338 Russians can't vote in UK elections.
🙄 Change the record.
For the first time in years, the majority has held priviliged people to account. Lets hope this leads to a better, more respectful, more fair country.

It is a tiny step in the right direction…which ironically enough is left ☺️ also encouraging is the fact that the Greens won as many seats as Reform, and Corbyn won as an independent, hooray.
Hooray 😊
It's great to get rid of the tories (for now). If LD had been the official opposition that would have been the icing on the cake.
Except look at the votes of Reform v Green 😂
I stayed awake until midnight saw some of the results trickling in, and then slept quite soundly. I don't know if i slept better knowing that we're all finally out from under the cosh of 14 years of bad gov't, but this morning does feel like a breath of fresher air. Here's hoping the repair work to our country's economy (and psyche) starts now 🌅
the thing that’s been made worryingly clear is just how bad FPTP is. this election will go down as one of the least representative in British history
Let’s have a reality check here. More Uk voters voted for Corbin’s Labour Party in 2019 than voted for Starmer’s Labour Party in 2024. No one has any really cause to celebrate today.
That is not actually true, Labour had 1% more voters than in 2019, so try again Tory bot.
Starmer conducted a much more lazer focused campaign. Why waste your time increasing a 20,000 majority in central Manchester to 30,000?! It is still one seat. That is inefficient politicking. Spread wide, but as shallow as you can get away with, target the right swingable seats. That is excellent leadership.
Let's have a reality check here. More people voted for Starmer's Labour than Nigel Farrago's Reform or Rishi's Tories, so this is a cause for celebration as a win is a win regardless of how much you cry about it!
Oh so what Labour are back and Tories got the boot that’s all that counts 😁😁😁😁😁😁
Restoring faith is for me paramount. 40% didn't vote and while many may simply reduce this to laziness, a healthy democracy needs better engagement; proper debate, politicians who act with probity, a press that is less partisan and less shouting, more listening.
Exactly this!
@@ianedwards2496 Agree entirely making voting compulsory
40% not voting was because the "two" choices were equally awful I think. You are completely right, I would love to see a politician answer questions honestly, rather then repeating the same soundbite over and over again. And an honest unbiased media, instead of state propagandists.
I went to be disappointed in the exit polls, but woke up to better news. Reform below 6, Tory down 10 on estimates, Libs up 10, more independents. Game on, lets put faith back in politics (the none religious type of faith).
Thanks so much James for helping to keep us sane over the last 14 years (particularly the last 8) of tories damage, lies and deciet which has been cheered on by alot of the spineless media. Not expecting miracles from Labour but as Steve Bray was playing when the election was announced, things can only get better ❤️
Sadly, the public in general are not going to afford Starmer a few weeks. Some are objective of him having a family meal once a week! He doesn't have a few weeks to take stock, he has forced his own hand into proving & providing on his promises. The labour majority is tenuous & will crumble at the first shortfall then, who knows?! Could even be a Reform government in 5 years if he puts a step out of line at the wrong time. A nightmare scenario no one wants to entertain.
As a Dutchman I follow UK politics for 8+ years now. Obviously my interest is the EU. And what a journey it has been. Mostly surprised that, dare I say his name, Nigel F. has become an MP. He is dangerous and should not be underestimated. Apart from that; glad this is over. Lets hope this new government will take the right steps; proportions representation, reform of the house of Lords and a written constitution and then back in the EU. Would be great.
Not back in the EU. The public voted out and out we will remain.
@@twistedsister2568 I hope not

What a day for James to be at work
we should forget or forgive Cameron and Osborne, they were equally resposible for the Tory mess and disaster for genuine conservatives.
And Brexit
Didn't you leave out the word NOT there?
Cameron's choice to give in to the far-right ( Farage) and let him have a referendum is a moment he destroyed the conservative party, then even though the referendum was informative and not compulsory Cameron's 2nd mistake was he acted on it and resigned instead to fight against it... from that moment on, it was only downhill, because without a single market in the globalized world, we live in today, UK can't and will never recover, because UK was a country of service providers, banking and trade ... we were the Bank of Europe as well as Centar of European Trade ... now it is all gone and we are nothing ... now we are third world isolated island... and that is the truth!
The damage goes back to Thatcher who set the Tories on the path to the 'one of us' market cultists they have become.
Or Clegg either, for enabling them in 2010, which set us on the path to chaos and oblivion.
I love how keir thinks it's actually an achievement, a chicken sandwich could have won this election with Labor
I love how Rishi thinks this was not a total disaster for the Tories, a 💩could have done better than he did!

What you’ve described so well James, is how the majority of Canadians felt after we got rid of Stephen Harper. That was a dangerous and venal man. We all walked around in a daze for weeks wondering if this change in our government was real.
