    Omg. This is great! What a perfect way to mount & display watercolour art. I am going to do this. Thanks for the easy directions and clear video!

    This is very helpful and makes a lot of sense with how to protect the painting without a frame as well. Thank you so much.

      Thank you so much, Amy! I definitely recommend trying it out. It's so liberating to be able to use as much water as you want without any buckling at all. My video next week will be me finishing this painting and it was so much fun!

    I’ve always wanted to do this but have never gotten around to it and I never actually watched any tutorials! Thank you for making this video! I love the look and feel of having a watercolour piece on a thicker base! 💕 great video

      I hope you try it out! It works like a dream. I had so much fun painting on it. I love watercolor on a thicker base too! I find framing just hides the texture and the glow of watercolor.

    I found out about wood watercolor panels through Danica Sills but she buys hers (from trekell if anyone is interested) and they're cool but I wanted to make some panel ones and on some raw edge wood. This helped a lot, thanks!!

    Hi Ley! Wonderful video. Never thought of using watercolor paper on panel before. Would this method also work with say, a copy paper glued down onto a melamine panel? I might have to try an expiriment and report back. 🤔 😅

    Have you seen anyone use this process in painting with gouache ? I would think tinted mixed media paper would work the same way.

    How did you cut the edges off the paper once it was on the wood? Did you use scissors or an exacto knife?

    If you're not fussy about the overall quality of your wood panels I have seen them for cheap at Dollaramas around Halifax. Might be balsa. Is super light. But may suit your usage.

      Oh, no way! That's so awesome! I am a bad Atlantic Canadian and I've never been to NL (though I've also only ever driven through NB on the way to PEI). It's definitely somewhere I want to go someday, though!

      Art of Ley Saulnier small world! 😊. I lived in Halifax in ‘85-‘86, and worked on Spring Garden Road, and I lived in Clayton Park. My grandmother was from Chester, NS and my grandfather (from NL) did Medicine at Dal, and that’s where they met, and moved back here after he finished University. So I have NS blood! 😊.
      Re the watercolour ground...yes, I thought the same thing about getting it smooth enough. I’ve meant to try to find a video to watch to see how it’s done, but I haven’t done that yet.
      EDIT: check out GoldenPaints: QOR Watercolor ground (I had to ‘edit my edit lol)

      @@bobbijolane367 Ahahaha that's so ironic! I was born in 1986, and my sister currently lives in Clayton Park. 😄
      Jenny Granberry has a video on Qor's ground too! It looks like thick frosting or something, so that's why I worry about texture. I'll check out that video suggestion, thanks!

    • @bobbijolane367

      Art of Ley Saulnier wow! I think you’re the first east coaster I’ve come across, that I know of, that is. 😊.
      On the GoldenPaints vid, they water it down and smear it on like paint and it self levels a bit, not like it is when left like a paste. I just put some in my cart on amazon...transparent and cold press.
      Btw Golden is the company who makes QOR...its their video.

      @LeySketch  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bobbijolane367 You should check out The Artistic Newfie! Corrina is a NL artist and a very lovely person.
      I didn't realise Golden had its own channel to be honest! So that's very cool. Thank you!
      If the ground self-levels at all, that would take a lot of stress out of it. If you try it out, would you mind letting me know what you think?

  • @bobbijolane367
    @bobbijolane367 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @LeySketch
      @LeySketch  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't! It intrigues me too, I'm just worried about getting it as smooth as I'd like? Maybe it's easier than it seems.

      I have, it's very good. I do one layer gesso then one layer of the ground (because it's a bit pricey)

    These techniques are irreversible but may work for some artists but it is important to read the "small print".
    If you only buy artist quality paints and avoid fugitive colors does it make sense to finish it this way?
    I have done framing professionally and there are reasons watercolors have been framed under glass (with a spacer between the glass and the art), do research on that as well.
    I would encourage you to go to Golden's website and read their page on using their mediums on watercolors so you can do so with an understanding of what happens to your art.
    Be informed before you start.
    Maybe it would be best used on Giclee prints of your work.
    From Golden Artist Colors website (QOR gives the same warning)
    VARNISHING WATERCOLORS with GOLDEN PRODUCTS
    CAUTION:The varnishing of watercolor paintings is a non-reversible addition to the artwork that will permanently change both the nature and appearance of the piece. Understanding these issues as well as performing application testing is critical before applying any varnish to a watercolor painting.
    Gamblin sells Cold Wax medium but does not have anything on their website about use on the top of watercolors.

    To save a fortune, I buy my panels from the dollar store. 2.00 to 4.50. I use carpenters glue instead of gesso.
