As someone who used to do work for a certain film festival in San Diego, I have seen more than my fair share of drunken Wong Fu members over the years. Good times.
Asian glow technically isn't considered an "allergy." When we think of the prototypical allergic reaction, it's a Type I hypersensitivity reaction that causes the release of a ton of histamine (and other stuff) that causes hives, swelling, etc. With Asian glow, it's from the build-up of acetaldehyde, a byproduct of ethanol (due to people making it too fast and/or not breaking it down fast enough). People probably take Pepcid before drinking to reduce Asian glow because it's an antihistamine (H2 blocker), which supposedly slows down the enzyme responsible for breaking down ethanol (alcohol dehydrogenase, which is overactive in like 80% of East Asians). If you do this, just be wary that you're probably drunker than you realize, because your blood alcohol concentration can be raised by as much as 30%+ than if you didn't take Pepcid or Zantac.
OMG!!! Thank you guys for making this Lunch Break episode!!! This was such a fun episode to listen to, mainly because I'm an aspiring mixologist and bartender, so this topic goes into my passion! When I was in college, I didn't drink as much because I felt I didn't need alcohol to have fun. Life happened and I played a video game that inspired me to start mixing drinks at home! I started attending classes on bartending, reading books on cocktail history, and watching loads of videos. 7 years later, I now own too many bottles of alcohol at home, that I use to host parties for friends, inviting them all to try my new creations from time to time. I hope to one day continue this trend and maybe mix for you guys :) Thank you Wongfu, been a fan since your Yellow Fever days!!! I always look forward to your videos.
Jen, that's my experience too. I always got asked about why I wasn't drinking and it seemed like such a shock to everyone! I felt like I had to explain myself all the time, but I never had an explanation. I just don't drink! Good for you, girl!
I'm with you, Jen. I had my first legal drink when I turned 21, which was a Moscow Mule. It wasn't bad, and I wasn't peer-pressured to drink on my birthday. But since that day, I've found that I have a really tolerance. I just end up with a splitting headache and a horrible, empty feeling in my stomach...all by the time I've finished half of my drink. Oh, and I basically barfed up my entire dinner after ONE drink that night. So yeah. Vowed never to drink after that day lol I find that I can enjoy life without having to drink alcohol, and I'm honestly okay with that!
Same, Jenn. I just turned 30 and I've only ever had a few sips of alcohol in my life, mostly because, to me, it smells and tastes absolutely *terrible*. In college most of what I saw were kids going crazy and making bad decisions, rather than consuming responsibly. That loss of control freaked me out enough (especially as I'm the size of an average 13yo girl) that I never tried to get over the bad taste. lol
When you're literally 15 and haven't drank before but watches video and laughs along with them even though you don't really understand what's happening... 😂
I think it's cool that folks like Jen are fine and fun without drinking; personally there's always a time and place (e.g. if you're at a party and want to be a little more relaxed it's not a bad idea, and if you're unable to chill then it's good to enjoy the good times once in awhile). Anyone else agree?
In Belgium, legal drinking age for "soft" alcohol (beer) is 16. Stronger alcohol is permitted at 18. It's very cultural because Belgium has a very strong beer culture (over a 1000 different beers for such a small country !). We have a phrase that says not to drink beer after wine, but you can drink wine after beer. We also say try not to mix too much, but if you do (you know you will!) you have to climb up in alcohol degrees ;-)
Jen! You’re not alone. I used get the same flaming feeling on my face as you described and also I would get rashes along my neck, chest, and thighs. Champagne produces the worst conditions for me. I used to get judged and questioned a lot for not drinking, but am glad that that has died down as people are beginning to realize that you don’t have to drink to have a good time. Occasionally I do still get questioned and judged but you learn to ignore it since there’s no point to associate with a person who tries to make another person feel embarrassed/bad. Being the sober friend has actually saved my friends from unwanted encounters/attention/etc. Also, I’m really glad Phil brought up the fact that he asks all his friends regardless of gender whether or not they made it home, because you can be attacked(not just sexually!) no matter your gender, size or appearance.
Yayayayy I always thought I was alone? Jenn, I've been called straight edge many times too so let's be it together! :')) I'm 19, it's legal in the UK to do so, but man.. I've never liked alcohol, any kind.. *IT TASTES INTENSELY BITTER!* why do people like it idk I'm cool with my warm lemon water, juice, yogurt drinks, smoothies, milkshakes, bubble tea and green tea! healthier, but also.. i'm a sweet tooth ahahahaa I get my highs from sugar.. woops- 😂😆
I'm like Jenn! But also it's simply because I don't like the taste of alcohol whatsoever.. I've tried sips of my friends 'sweet' drinks that they say taste like candy but it's like the alcohol overpowers immediately and it makes me feel nauseous. I'll stick to my iced tea and water! :B
Hahaha. Chumbawamba reference for the win! Also, this episode came out at the perfect time, I was just setting down with my supper and a glass of wine 🤣🍷
Going on 30 and never had alcohol. And I plan to keep it that way. What's interesting too is that my local laws used to have the drinking age at 18 but then they raised it to 21. So for my peers, we reached the age to legally drink then had it taken away for a year or two for when we had to wait to turn 21 to legally drink again. Haha. It didn't bother me because I didn't drink, but it's always funny recalling this.
One thing I found interesting was drinking culture in Asia vs North America. One example: I remember seeing video clips of baseball fans in Korea having a chug-off sponsored by the alcohol companies and allowed by the professional baseball teams in-between innings during a game. Meanwhile at baseball games in Toronto a fan who pledges to be a designated driver get rewarded in a random draw.
Totally get what Jenn is saying. I do drink but, I always know my limit. It's best to get to a level where you enjoy your night. In my instance, when I start getting giddy, smiley, and clingy. haha I feel this responsibility to take care of people. I'm also too conscious of myself to entirely let myself lose control as a strong fear of mine is regretting something I've done; something that can never be taken back.
Alcohol makes me sleepy so I often limit myself to one cocktail on night outs. It gets annoying when people are like “just have one more!”. My intake is not stopping your please. I’ve pushed my limit 3 different times and the hangovers and puking were real! Those special occasions were worth it though.
same girl, same. I don´t drink myself and dont care what others think about me. And now everyone who knows me just know that I dont drink... pretty cool hahaha
I approached alcohol as something for special occasions like for weddings. I did an experiment with various types of wine to see whether I would like them and determined that I would be able to tolerate drinking but I do not really enjoy it. Like Jen, I do not drink. I've been asked why and I just respond that I know my limitations and just tend to not like drinking alcohol.
Lol I'm so Jenn. I don't drink by hoice. Not into it. I like to be in control of myself but also don't want to go through the tipsyness/drunkeness symptoms. Also, and idk if this is wierd, but I feel like I'm scared to get addicted to it.. lol
I've never been drunk; warm and fuzzy only. I also appear to like dancing more. I don't see the appeal of drinking to that point. I also usually don't feel safe enough to do so. The chill atmosphere Jen described is ideal. I mostly dodged via me genuinely not liking the taste of most alcohol, especially beer (which is usually the easiest to get, especially in college). I like super sweet drinks. I guess my taste buds must be warped also, since even drinks that others see as sweet don't taste sweet to me. So it usually comes down to mixed drinks. Ah, I don't mind peach soju and some drink that had cranberry and vodka though. Sangria with a TON of fruit is okay too. I also never forgot the advice from an upperclassman in college: for every drink, have a cup of water in between. ....but then my bladder kicks in and usually the constant need to pee ended the night for me lol.
haha from my experience of drinking in my university days... generally depending on your tolerance... mixing drinks is fine... with the only exception for wine.. especially red wine... they will give you the worst hangover when mixed
I had my first drink a few days ago. Half of a hard cider and a moscow mule. My heart rate was around 150 and it felt like my face was on fire... great times :)
Seeing someone even slightly aggressively and condescendingly pressuring another person to drink makes me so uncomfortable. It’s a huge turn-off and labeling one person who doesn’t drink for personal/allergy-related/religious reasons and even slightly making fun of them (even if you think it’s a “cute” joke) seriously puts me in a bad mood.
The earliest I've ever been haha. But dang, every lunch break, I'm always distracted because I'm somehow always hungry and I just stare at their food...which always looks so good. Day drinking wooooo.
I get Asian glow. My face feels hot and my heart races. I read online that it is an intolerance not a true allergy. Also my first drink was Johnny Walker Black Label served neat. So Chris I relate to bourbon and whiskey!
A downer doesn't mean anything about your mood, it's the psychological impacts. Downers suppress your reasoning and certain brain functions- hence blacking out after too much alcohol (not talking poisoning level). An upper stimulates regions of the brain.
I'm in college and I gotta say sometime you're so tired at clubs that it feels like your drunk that when your friends ask you what happen the next day, you don't even remember yourself 😂😂😂
I just have the right recipe of circumstances that caused me to not be a drinker: 1) anxiety disorder and not liking feeling out of control of my body, 2) dating a guy who hates drinking because of his upbringing and family history of alcoholism and the negativity it brings, 3) being broke and not being able to afford non-necessities, and 4) never being a person with a lot of friends and the ones I have are introverted as broke like me so we don’t go out to bars or clubs ever, nor did we party in college lol even now in my late 20s I feel like I missed out on key experiences as a young person and I’m embarrassed that I never had a wild party phase of my life, but Idk if I could go back I would just have the same generic experiences everyone else had which doesn’t sound worth it
I don't know if this is a thing but I'm pretty sure I drank so much (through highschool parties and a 9 month Europtrip in my early 20s) that my body got used to the Asian glow and now I don't glow any more.
Am I the only one that watched this feeling like an alcoholic? lol and I don’t even drink much!! My first time getting really drunk (White girl waste) was at 15, first drink at 11 (I snuck it). But during uni/college I didn’t drink much, only went clubbing like 6 times last year :P Edit: you get hungover when you mix dark & light liquor (eg. Whiskey & vodka) or sugary drinks with any other liquor to an extent. So whatever you feel good eating-eat that. Your body appreciates what you’re feeding it so your hangover isn’t as bad.
I totally agree with what Jen was saying. The social pressure of people asking why aren't you drinking, or never experience being drunk is real.
Yeah why dont you, its not addictive
As someone who used to do work for a certain film festival in San Diego, I have seen more than my fair share of drunken Wong Fu members over the years. Good times.
I was DD on this episode! (Do DD's exist in the age of rideshares?)
They definitely do!! Especially when one of us drives
DD’s still exist! I’d rather know my friends got home safe than drink
@@Martian_marzan What does DD's stand for?

Yay Jenn, you are not alone. I also don't see the reason to get drunk of alcohol. Is there anyone else in the office who doesn't drink?

same. I´m 22 almost 23.. and the time will come when everyone just understands and respects that you don´t drink. Be proud of it hehe

If you're Asian and get the Asian glow, remember to take Pepcid AC 15-20 mins before you drink. It helps a lot.
Props on the habit and the IPAs
Liquor before beer, you’re in the clear. Beer before liquor, you’ve never been sicker.
“Feed them bread” 😂
There's also a Vietnamese version that means "empty cup": "cạn ly"

Vietnamese also say empty cup same as Korean, Japanese and Chinese

i get asian glow sometimes but thankfully my makeup usually covers it up🤣
Hangovers come from being dehydrated in my opinion. That's why they say cure for hangovers is to drink pedialyte or something.
yes dont drink and drive! great topic!

I just have the right recipe of circumstances that caused me to not be a drinker: 1) anxiety disorder and not liking feeling out of control of my body, 2) dating a guy who hates drinking because of his upbringing and family history of alcoholism and the negativity it brings, 3) being broke and not being able to afford non-necessities, and 4) never being a person with a lot of friends and the ones I have are introverted as broke like me so we don’t go out to bars or clubs ever, nor did we party in college lol even now in my late 20s I feel like I missed out on key experiences as a young person and I’m embarrassed that I never had a wild party phase of my life, but Idk if I could go back I would just have the same generic experiences everyone else had which doesn’t sound worth it
I love the hard alcohol like bitter the better
I don't know if this is a thing but I'm pretty sure I drank so much (through highschool parties and a 9 month Europtrip in my early 20s) that my body got used to the Asian glow and now I don't glow any more.
Lunchbreak via Zoom or Webex !!!
omg i was so worried that phil was bout to drink half of cup of hennesy and then i saw the coke
To avoid hangover, drink a glass of water for every two drinks.
