When I met my husband in 1996 he played this song to me and said that he'd promised himself that the woman he dedicated this song to, he would spend the rest of his life with and he did, I am so lucky to have had 24 wonderful years together, he passed away suddenly on 8th march 2020 God bless my darling ❤️
Ridiculously underrated. What a band. What a frontman. What an era for British music and I was right in the middle of it 17 in 96. Best years of my life.
I saw them live twice at their peak period. One of those gigs was at the Ulster Hall in Belfast - they were incredible. The album they were touring was “Different Class”, but Jarvis gave a world class performance that night. I still love them.
"when we woke up that morning we had no way of knowing that in a matter of hours we'd change the way we were going" has got to be some of the most moving lyrics ever written.
For me, this is one of the greatest love songs of all time. People often comment that 'The Pogues-Fairytale Of New York' is the best christmas song because it's not a sugar-coated ideal of Christmas, but instead is indicative of what most Christmas's are like.. shouting and argueing... well, Something Changed is like that for love-songs for me.. its not so much "we met across the ballroom dancefloor", but more "thank God I met you tonight, I didn't even plan to get off my arse and come out". ...like what most of us have experienced.
I agree almost 100% with your comment. The only think our opinions differ on is the Christmas bit. The best "Christmas" song, in my opinion is Depeche Mode's Christmas Island, as it has nothing to do with Christmas, and is just a beautiful and dark instrumental track. (thus the quotation marks on 'Christmas')
This reminds me of my first love , she was from Ipswich and studying at Leicester . We met in a club in 96 and hit it off she was amazing, we broke up that same year. I tried to get in touch in 2020 the year that keeps giving to be told by her mum that shortly after graduation in 98 she was diagnosed with leukemia and died in 2000, she never got to live her dreams.
I loved the 90s music so much. There were so many amazing bands and artists of all different genres. It was a great time to be young. I'll listen to songs from back then and love them but this song really touches my heart. It's just so beautiful. The words, the music, it's just so lovely. Imagine being the person someone wrote that song about. Just perfection.
Pulp's lyrics are second to none. So many stand out tracks, but it's like they lived 15 different life times to achieve their lyrics. So many decent artists write some complete bollocks.
I love the fact that they know that this is such a fantastic, beautiful song that all they need to do for the video is just film themselves performing it.
I will be eternally grateful to have lived through one of the most progressive and magical times in British music, when this came out I was 20 years old, away at art college having the time of my life❤️❤️
I met my husband in the mid 90s and we often sing to this song and how it relates to us at the time we met. Could have gone and watched a film instead, but we didn't, we went out for a drink and met each other. Destiny 😍
Brilliant song off an equally brilliant album. There was some great music in the Britpop era from the likes of Oasis, Blur, Pulp, the Verve, Suede etc.
"Do you believe, that there's someone up above..." How those deep violins tug at your heartstrings. I can never listen to this masterpiece just once, it stirs so many emotions, feelings and memories of how things have, may and might have been. And the key change and powerful delivery teed-up and handed over beautifully by the soulful Gibson - "Oh, when we woke up that morning, we had no way of knowing..." "Where would I be now, oh where would I be now if we'd never met?" Awesome. Just awesome. Something changed. Bravo, Jarvis.
Growing up in the 90s, I wasn't able to appreciate the talent around. Jarvis cocker, what a genius. I always loved oasis, but as I've aged, this is just brilliant, up there with the smiths pure lyrical genius.
I was dumped by my gf for another when this song came out. It was and remains the most emotional traumatic time of my life. I always associated this song with the hurt I felt back then, which is not what the song is about. Only now more than 25 years later can I listen to it and reflect with more wisdom with sadness.
when i was a teenager, this song was the first song I try to play when I was trying to learn to play guitar for the first time and its the song that made me want to play guitar because most of my friends were trying to learn to play guns n roses and metallica songs.. now I can even play metallica songs, but this song and pulp, blur, radiohead (no, not oasis) songs have really deep meaning in my heart. Many thanks Jarvis!
to all comments who comparing Pulp with Blur, Oasis etc... come on man! they all different on many aspects, that's what makes 90's become the best era for Brit-Pops..because we have so many different musics and songs to enjoy!
This will always be new years Eve 1991 met a wonderful girl a beautiful daughter several years later . A grandad now happy memories this song is just so spot on about that night
28yrs ago to the exact day today ie Monday 22nd August 1994 in the evening in the pub of the holiday site i was staying I saw the only person I've ever loved for the very 1st time. We wouldn't get talking to each other til the thurs. He went home the Fri, I went home on the sat. He was 16 and I was nearly 15. There's no chance of anything now I do know that. I've heard this song a few times today and it always hits a nerve since the fallout. I'd go back to the mid 90s in a heart beat. My life well and l truly changed from the day he walked in it and changed after I last saw him and this song is so true for us both I'm sure neither of us expected to know each other and changed the course of both of our lives. He definitely changed me and I think I can say hand on heart I would've been in another had things gone differently with him or I'd not met him but I've never regretted meeting him just regretted losing him. As much as this was out at the time I wish I'd realised the significance of this song when I knew him to tell him that's when you know you met the 1 you really do change
I heard this on @bbc6music with Lauren Laverne today for the first time in years. I just welled up and couldn't contain my feelings. I'd forgotten how beautiful a realistic love song it still is.
I feel that about all Jarvis's songs....so underrated, but so amazing anyway...fuck the music populous anyway they'd rather get wanky over simon cowell audable diarrhoea anyway...so its better being underrated than shit dont you agree sir?
Sean Rhind I hate everything that simon cowell and his poxy panal of judges stand for...Jarvis for me is a brilliant singer songwriter ...so yes I sure do agree with you :)

Big Big love to you and yours
I'm sorry for your loss
Well, what a love story! 💙 You were so blessed!
Ridiculously underrated. What a band. What a frontman. What an era for British music and I was right in the middle of it 17 in 96. Best years of my life.
Vicvega 79 lucky you! What a time to be alive
I saw them live twice at their peak period. One of those gigs was at the Ulster Hall in Belfast - they were incredible. The album they were touring was “Different Class”, but Jarvis gave a world class performance that night. I still love them.
I was 19, lovely time.
Only 14 but my older brother played these guys and other britpop bands nonstop lol great times musically 😊
I was 21, still love the music that was around then.
"when we woke up that morning we had no way of knowing that in a matter of hours we'd change the way we were going"
has got to be some of the most moving lyrics ever written.
Yeah, it’s wonderful.
Perfect album. Musically and lyrically. No filler. Bold and different from what everybody else was doing.
Not only one of the best love songs but a song about how the sheer absurdity of chance can affect our lives. Love Pulp.
For me, this is one of the greatest love songs of all time. excellent observation.
I’m tired and emotional (drunk) but that is a fucking beautiful observation.
Blimey! Nail. Head.

Definitely. Beautiful lyrics and melody...when we woke up that morning... Where would I be now...
Rip Steve Mackey. One of my favourite songs ever and a wonderful bass line.
I’m in that early part of a relationship and I’m not ashamed to admit the lyrics in this song moved me to tears.
I know just how you feel. Love is such a beautiful thing. All the best; hope things are still going well for you.

Been on my own for 20 years and yes it brings me to tears what l lost
I absolutely love Pulp, so much that I once wrote to Jarvis (he sent me a cd a week later!!) and this song is really beautiful. One of my favourites.
Where did you write him to D:? I could never find an adress
Izzy Doyle He's marvelous like that, its true.

This Is so sad, seriously... May her soul live forever in peace💙
That is terribly sad; my heart goes out to her. My sympathies.
😢
Jarvis nailing the very essence of existence as per. I was 19 in 1995 and this remains absolutely timeless.
He's one of the hottest and most charismatic musicians of all time..
God I love this song. The lyrics, the pace, the string section synth, its perfection
I am not a fan of pulp at all BUT this song is brilliant poignant , longing and so many emotions .I agree with your sentiments.
RIP Steve Mackey...😥
Thank you for the music 💜🙏
This songs beats me so deep inside. His voice, the strings... Everything means so much. Precious gem of music
We played this at our wedding. Great lyrics.
Wow amazing choice
Such a beautiful love song. Can't believe it's so incredibly underrated..
great singer great lyrics and great orchestration totally agree with you
The best album of the 90s, no discussion.
I loved the 90s music so much. There were so many amazing bands and artists of all different genres. It was a great time to be young. this song is very thought provoking on the fragility and coincidence of meeting the love of your life - which just a single second could change
Pulp's lyrics are second to none. So many stand out tracks, but it's like they lived 15 different life times to achieve their lyrics. So many decent artists write some complete bollocks.
Top notch lyrics. The only other band I can think of with comparable quality lyrics is The Beautiful South.
@@calibrax Agree, loved their early stuff. Great songs about murdering your wife, shop lifting, wanking and alcoholism.
Cocker was and still is a fucking genius. One of the best lyricist of all time.
This song has an uplifting kind of sadness. Amazing track from an amazing album
Yep, I agree a perfectly bittersweet delivery and melody.
I love the fact that they know that this is such a fantastic, beautiful song that all they need to do for the video is just film themselves performing it.

Completely beautiful, Mr Cocker is an amazing poet
Gorgeous song. Well-composed, well-produced, great musicianship. One of my faves from Pulp.
absolutely agree... love this one
one of the most beautiful songs ever written
Gosh he is so beautiful!
There's not many songs that give me goose pimples, but this is one of them.
Absolutely beautiful song .... totally sums up when by chance you meet that someone that you know you'll spend the rest of your life with.
Possibly my favourite Pulp song - beautiful and poetic x
Love this song so much. One of Pulps best.
The arrangement on this is amazing
Yeah those beautiful string melodies and backing really make the song.
Ikr, one of the best arrangements and melodies in Britpop. The Gallaghers are still trying to compete this. lol
The year I started college, the year I met my wife who's now the Mum of our 2 beautiful kids. Music tells the story of us doesn't it...
I met my husband in the mid 90s and we often sing to this song and how it relates to us at the time we met. Could have gone and watched a film instead, but we didn't, we went out for a drink and met each other. Destiny 😍
Same story with me and my Wife. Wasnt going to go out the night we met. Thank god I did. Shes my angel.

Me: "Pulp"
Yep. It's like the other question: The Beatles or The Stones?
The Kinks.
I always say the same.

[Verse 1]
I wrote this song two hours before we met
I didn't know your name or what you looked like yet
Oh, I could have stayed at home and gone to bed
I could have gone to see a film instead
[Chorus 1]
You might have changed your mind and seen your friend
Life could have been very different but then
Something changed
[Verse 2]
Do you believe that there's someone up above?
And does he have a timetable directing acts of love?
Why did I write this song on that one day?
Why did you touch my hand and softly say
[Chorus 2]
"Stop asking questions that don't matter anyway
Just give us a kiss to celebrate here today"
Something changed
[Verse 3]
Oh, when we woke up that morning we had no way of knowing
That in a matter of hours, we'd change the way we were going
Where would I be now
[Chorus 3]
Where would I be now if we'd never met
Would I be singing this song to someone else instead
I don't know, but like you just said:
Something changed
Thank you
