That was some great advice. I'm new to the busking world but have been around magic most of my life. My best friend Brian has helped me and encouraged me a lot to go out and perform. He's been busking on the streets of Portland for probably over 10 to 15 years and is an amazing busker. I've seen him pull in huge crowds of people like 50 to 100 people or more before. And it always amazes me on how he pulls people in. I've gone out busking with him before and watched people walk right by me.....lol. It's truelly a art on how to pull people in. It's true also that you need to be confident because people pick up on that. That's something i lack because I feel that my magic isn't good enough. So I'm trying to work on it. Every step counts right.....lol. I also believe that it's wise to have someone with you either for support or just to help watch your hat because some areas especially in Portland you can easily get robbed. The street crews out here are very bold these days to just come up and take your money. Thanks for the video Michael as always great job. Keep up the good work.

Great video when I was living in New Orleans. I performed on the streets. My hatline was " magic is a sharing art. I shared with you now I ask you to dig deep and share with me then pass the hat. " The part about getting them to avoid putting change in the hat I always said " If you are going to throw change in the hat for the safety of everyone wrap it in a five dollar bill if you want to be extra safe wrap it in a bigger bill" Great video keep it going

I heard a street juggler use something similar to that and just started to run with it and as I performed and heard what my audience was saying added to it. The change comment was a spectator who said wrap it in a bill for everyone's safety. I thought it was great so I started using it

Nice! I have several friends that regularly busk here on Fremont Street in Vegas. Great area to catch some really fantastic magic being performed.

Great advice. Myself I've been in the same spot since 1997. I love it. I'm a "regular" in my downtown. I say that with humility too. I love what I do. I will perform for 1 person up to how ever many that stops. I've never been one to do a pitch, or wait till a big crowd gathers. I also don't have a set show. It depends on who shows up because of the rule don't perform the same trick twice. I use a briefcase table that sits on a tripod. I also only perform at night on Friday and Saturday nights from like 6-11. I find that during the day people are to much in a rush and also it's hotter out. I do tons of stuff. Usually my first trick is a simple transformation of the wrong card into the right card in a spectators hands. Simple, easy, to the point. People FREAK at it though. As a mentalist I do mentalism too. I do a book test, a name revelation, and key bending if the right keys are available. I'd say I mostly do cards and mentalism. I however do the cut 'n' restored rope, silk vanish, thumbcuffs ... etc. The ambitious card / card to wallet plays big too. As far as hat lines, taped to my tripod table is a box that says tips, and people tip me 90% of the time. Love this video.

The Illusionist sure as long as your city allows busking and you follow curfew laws I don’t see anything wrong with it. Now if you are required to apply for licenses then you may need to be 18 or have an adult concent for you. It depends.

If you’re just starting off, on your first day, get a small table. It could be a folding TV tray stand, or get something bigger and just get a keyboard stand or a restaurant tray stand, look for a used one and for the board buy a cork board frame.
A table establishes you and your space. It’s important you get a sign. Hand write it or better, get it printed at kinkos and attach it to the table
Put whatever you want “magic show” “worlds greatest card/coin trick” “free magic”
One person will stop and then a crowd will form and you will realize how unprepared you really are.
