    INFO: Peter Gabriel is probably most well-known for his time as the lead singer of the legendary prog-rock band Genesis. But in 1975, after leaving the group, he also launched a successful solo career and spawned hit singles like «Solsbury Hill» and «Sledgehammer». He’s also the founder of the WOMAD festival, and is known to be an avid human rights activist. In 2010 he was inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame together with his band mates in Genesis, and for good reasons. He’s an artist that always wanted to explore and create new realms of music, and ultimately made the world or rock music a whole lot more interesting.

    Shook his hand once and said "Mr Gabriel, your music has changed my life and I am a huge fan." He said "thanks". Don't think he expected it but I could see that he really appreciated the gesture and I felt very privileged to have met him.

      No! He is not! He is the devil personified!
      I was his #1follower! Having grown up, I realized!
      I don't understand how is so difficult for everybody to see it, I mean it is right in front, it is miscreantly, bounder, blatant in the face!
      Nevertheless, with his angelic voice, and talent (which I'm not denying)
      However, the bad guy is not going to show his real face, until is too late, he's not stupid!
      Gabriel used The Bible to write his songs, he inspired in them, it's all in there, he mocked it! He lead and still is leading young ppl astray!
      Are you thinking I'm too religious? You know what religious means? "A particular system of faith and worship, so... science is a religion, rock is a religion, why should I feel less, or wrong, for being God's fan??
      Would you respect me better if I was a fan of Prada, or J. Balwin? Or however his name is!
      Now a days ppl are fans of anything, things, foods, horoscopes, idiots, and everybody accepts it just fine... Should I not be a fan of God?
      I could never be a fan of someone that belongs to the same mankind I belong to... I can admire them, but fanatic, nah...
      Gabriel used The Bible, from the beginning! Or... From Genesis to revelation, as both names were used to release his first record, dependant on the country... From Genesis to revelation or In the beginning...
      And his last, while genesis? THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY...
      I know All his lyrics...
      He is how I came to know God does exist! Bcs it was waaay to much devilish, diabolic, to not have a "counterpart."
      Ja! Then I discovered that it is not a counterpart, but his boss... Yeah, God is Satan's boss, Satan is a created being, and he trembles when God speaks!
      He is not God's enemy, but ours! The one that tempts...
      He is described as the son of the morning, bcs he fell before the creation of men.
      You see, God could've created just robots, as in the games you play, you control them, sitting in your place, when you get bored, you just simply change the game, or turn off your device, until you decide to play again.
      God gave us options to decide, if you think about it, that is the principle of freedom...
      There is good, and there is bad, you are here to recognize it, to learn, and to decide. There is no better way to learn something, than by practicing it.
      God gave us choices, a brain, and a con-science, (with- knowledge) Or...from where did you get yours?
      1Cor 10:23
      23 “I have the right to do anything,” you say-but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”-but not everything is constructive"
      If you think about it, you can do anything you want. However not everything is benefitial to you.
      How else could we decide, if there were no options?
      Satan is the accuser of men, whatever you do wrong, he will go fast to God, and acuse you. That's what he does.
      He wanted God to let him go, to lose him... And there he went, falling... Is that what you want, that God let you of you?
      Satan hates us, bcs we are the creation that will remain, after he is gone, to hell.
      Your call.
      Isaiah 14:
      11 All your pomp has been brought down to the grave,
      along with the noise of your harps;
      maggots are spread out beneath you
      and worms cover you.
      12 How you have fallen from heaven,
      morning star, son of the dawn!
      You have been cast down to the earth,
      you who once laid low the nations!
      13 You said in your heart,
      “I will ascend to the heavens;
      I will raise my throne
      above the stars of God;
      I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,
      on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon.[a]
      14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;
      I will make myself like the Most High.”
      15 But you are brought down to the realm of the dead,
      to the depths of the pit.
      16 Those who see you stare at you,
      they ponder your fate:
      “Is this the man who shook the earth
      and made kingdoms tremble,
      17 the man who made the world a wilderness,
      who overthrew its cities
      and would not let his captives go home?”
      He, the devil, was as well the one in charge of the musical praise for God, in the heavens.
      So, he has been the only one, along with the 3rd part of the angels, that were exiled from heaven. Men fornication, takes him back for a moment, to the glory he had in paradise. He craves it, bcs he's been out of there, for too long...
      th-cam.com/video/NtJPRhoqWcM/w-d-xo.html
      Ya think the music today is "a bit satanic" Gabriel was used to start that! And he gave in...
      Everything he wrote is the same as today"s chants, "do what thy will" or "satan's lord..." Every piece of pop, rock, rap, hip hop. Its everywhere now! Music is full of it!
      I could show you soooo many lyrics... Sooo many.
      J.B
      This was released 9 months ago, can you spot the mouth guards, among other beauties?

      OK, I have to reply to this. I like Gabriel very much, I like Genesis with Gabriel very much, I like most Genesis without Gabriel very much. There seems to be a mythology that Gabriel was the principled artiste who left Genesis, which Collins immediately turned into a commercial pop band. In fact, as this video says, Gabriel's first solo release was "Solisbury Hill", which was a commercial pop hit, albeit better quality than most. At the same time, Genesis was putting out "A Trick of the Tail", a brilliant album with no commercial pop tracks at all. On his next albums Gabriel continued to hit the charts, while Genesis released "And Then There Were Three", where they finally included, almost as a bonus track, "Follow You, Follow Me", and they had their first hit since "In Your Wardrobe". And why not? Gabriel had been showing them how its done. I won't argue that Genesis was worth listening to from about "Abacab" onwards, but the people who demonize Collins really have to go back and look at the timeline.

      @@davidolie8392 Genesis sound was at first mostly influenced by Phillips and Rutherford . Ant's influence continued after he left. Of course, there's be some inertia in the band as a whole vs a solo artist. Peter wrote some 'pop' songs for GEnesis also - Willow farm, Carpet Crawlers are for all their sophistication, hardly prog. Doesn't matter , it's top quality. Some 'prog' Genesis did after he left was not up to par. Perhaps Peter's perfectionism was also missed, not just his brilliant vocals and presence.

    I lost interest in Genesis after PG left the group. As I mature, I'm drawn to the man more and more. I find his balance as a human being to be quite admirable, as well as the depth of his songwriting and musical abilities. Fortunate to have him.

Both have inspired my singing/playing over the years!! I have a suggestion for 2 possible underrated artists to cover in future "Understanding" series: Procol Harum & Blue Oyster Cult.

    I will never thank my father enough for introducing me to Peter Gabriel. He became an integral part of my musical universe, on par with Alan Parsons. Saw him in London, Monaco, New York AND Boston, and I can guarantee you that these were four different experiences altogether...

      I think that Peter Gabriel still tours, but the dates might be less frequent right now. He did go on an international tour in 2012-2013 (the latter year was when I saw him in Boston), so he might be on "rest mode" and had limited his number of concerts.

      The Secret World tour was hands down the most amazing shows I have ever seen, with the exception of Bruce Springsteen in 1979 in San Francisco at Winterland. If you haven't bought the concert video, you absolutely should to experience it. I was lucky enough to be in the front row for a couple of the shows. I will never forget those low bass notes blowing me out of my chair!

      My father also introduced me to Peter Gabriel, and I too can't thank him enough. We've been to three of his concerts together (the last one just a couple of days ago) and every time was different but equally fantastic. His voice is absolutely unearthly, his lyrics profound and his story telling second to none

  • @stephenparallox

    The one thing I would add to this, which I didn't see in this video, was that he did embrace new technologies along with world music. He fully embraced and arguably had some of the best music videos ever, but he also tried to bring that to other mediums. He even brought music go PC gaming with his Secret World release, it was really groundbreaking.

    My father is a huge Genesis fanboy. And his heart lies with Phil Collins. He loves both Genesis' Collins-era and his solo career.
    But he likes it a lot, Peter Gabriel. The first time he spoke of the band I was five and it was to tell about the live version of "I Know What I Like" (still my favourite one) and Gabriel's performance. Some years later, he introduced me to the "Sledgehammer" clip. Peter Gabriel became influential on me ever since.
    I love Phil Collins and thank him for the love for drums shared between me and my father. But as an artist, Peter Gabriel resides in my heart.
    So both love Genesis and like both singers. But we clearly have different preferences, hahahahahaha.
