  • Fixing the avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync error message
    As I've got all of the items out while I build a quad I thought it would be useful to capture the screen and show the two main gotchas for those of you who are getting this message.
    I hope it helps those of you who have this issue and are scratching your heads.
    Thanks for watching, please comment and subscribe.
    Happy flying!

    Good video. If this does not fix the error, just uninstall the Arduino board then reinstall with the drivers and make sure Com matches and it should work. This is what worked for me, now works great.

    Painless360 Thank you ! You helped me a lot so I could assemble and configure my quadricoptero. Mainly GPS that requires a lot of commitment. I had several problems mainly for the wrong software versions. So I want to make my lessons learned that can help to assemblers: 1 ) Use the Arduino software version 1.0.1 : When I downloaded the current version , could not even compile the controller board software; With version 1.0.1 could compile normally;
    2 ) Use the FTDI version 2.8.14.0 . I could not upload due to error stk500_getsync ( ) !!!! . The problem was the driver installed . I used the version 2.8.14.0 driver. I had to force the use of this driver, because Windows always settled a new version that did not work.
    3) Always run the program as a user with administrator profile. Always use the windowns compatibility mode Windowns XP SP 3
    My set: Controller : Multiwii 2.5 GPS : Crius Neo 6 I2 Gps Nav Crius (Chip Mega 328p ) PC OS: Windowns 7 SP1 ( 64-bit)
    Painless360 Thank you !

    For me the source of error was the Belkin USB extender N10117 (powered) , which detects the USB to UART FTDI at COM3 but still gives me this error, When I connected directly to the USB on my PC , it works like a charm, I did get a hint about the probable causes from this video, thanks for that.

    Painless, there is one other thing, if you are using the Micro Minimosd (the little square one) and you plug it in wrong it goes into this error. I have done it 2 times by accident, I tried all kind of things but nothing fixes it that I know of.

    Hi! I got the same board ( Multiwii SE v2.5) ,and i wanted to refresh the software by arduino 1.0.5.,after sketching, received the error message: avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync. I made everything as i saw in your video, but not better. The LED's not lighting, until connected to PC. Do you have any idea to solve the problem? THX

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Csongor Keller Could be all sorts of things if the suggestions in the video didn't get it sorted. Make sure you can see the FTDI board as a COM port in device manager in the PC..
      Best of luck.

    Hi painless, I'm very new in this. I've ordered a "MultiWii SE V. 3.0" but there is standing nothing on the back. There is a mpu6050 (combo), and a HMC 5883L and a BMP 085.
    There is a #define in the Mw which called
    #define HK_MultiWii_SE_V2. I have activated it and in the Config I can see the movement, but it's the wrong way and the cycle time goes up to over 30000.
    I have seen there is a ATMega 328P and tried to figure out which one I should use. But everyone makes this error. What can I do else?
    I'm running MW 2.3 on Windows

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem will be that the board you defined is not the right one and the orientation of the sensors will be out. I'm not sure which is the right one as I've not used this board myself. I'd so to a forum like RCgroups and ask there.
      Sorry I can't be of more help.

  • @Seamanforever
    @Seamanforever 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It does'nt works for me...maybe the issue depends by Windows 10? Thanks

  • @brandonberchtold9484
    @brandonberchtold9484 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've been working on this issue on and off for way too long. Turns out I made a dumb mistake and connected the Rx pins between the FTDI and CRIUS boards (and same with the Tx pins), when I should have connected the Rx pins to the corresponding Tx pins.... Whoops
    I also changed the "bits per second" in device manager for the COM port I was using, to match the "Overriding baud rate" given in the output in the Arduino IDE: "57600"

    What worked for me:
    Struggled with this for hours. Finally got it to work by timing the upload from the arduino IDE. I think the MicroOSD device has a "boot mode" when starting, then runs program. If you insert the usb cable / FTDI into the computer, then immediately press upload on the arduino IDE - it gets the upload process started while in this initial "boot mode". Hope this helps.
    The modes (I'm guessing) when starting green light is on - then the blue light starts flashing rapidly. If you don't get the upload started before blue light is flashing... my arduino IDE would get the avrdude sync error. If you time upload properly during the initial startup - it works? Good luck.
    PS - be sure to throw some salt over your shoulder, don't walk under ladders, stay away from black cats... etc. Then it will work.

      Hi Joseph, I don't use them myself but this is a common Arduino error that means the software didn't get the right reply from the board. Usually due to board type wrong, bad USB cable/connector or issues on the board itself (like power problems).

      This error means that the program isn't getting the response it needs from the bao4rds you have selected for some reason could be driver, com port selection, board and CPU selection, USB cable issues, FTDI problem or board problem. You will need to check and confirm each in turn.
      Best of luck.

    chinese arduino nano with ch340: very simple, just jump the 5v pin to the reset pin next to it and all works perfectly.

    Thank you, for me it was incorrect com port + I had to install some drivers as I have a Chinese copy CH340G

    I've tried every ATMega 328 on the list and my com port is definitely correct as device manager properly picks it up. I'm at a total loss :-(

      Hi, this video isn't an exhaustive list of causes. You need to google the error and run through all the potential issues until you find the one that's causing your issue. I would start here - arduino.stackexchange.com/questions/17/some-dude-named-avr-wont-let-me-upload-my-program-aka-avrdude-stk500-getsync

      Kabab
      Hard to see with the camera moving all the time but I tracing it out by freeze framing the video I think I get that the orange and yellow wires coming out of the MinimOSD are NOT crossed - Tx is going to Tx on the FTDI board.
      I would try switching these two wires over on one end and give it another go. Sorry if this isn't it but a static shot is a lot easier to follow when it's wiring..
      Hope it helps

    I've had the same problem with arduino Mega, but even install driver didn't work. But i have found a solution. You can't have plugged anything in TX0 and RX0 on your board. Unplug it and upload. Worked for me

    I'm just about to throw out this board altogether!!!
    I happend to accidentally break off the mini USB on my multiwii mega pirate board... Anyhow I can rewire this through the FTDI connector right? If the answer is yes, then my next question is, why is it the Multiwii Config program doesn't read the movements on my board? Before, when i was actually using the mini usb port on the board, everything in the multiwii config program worked fine.
    The only reason why I'm trying to re-flash this board is because I can't get it to ARM. So my last question is... The only way I can fix this is through the programming side of things and not wiring, right?
    P.S. I watched your video on ARMING and how you change the endpoints on your transmitter. Well, I've done that and it still doesn't arm.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've not used this board myself but the FTDI should work if the USB is broken. It's odd that it won't arm. Can you setup the board to arm using a switch on the TX (see my video on setting Multiwii modes)?Are you sure that that the rudder channel isn't reversed? Does it arm if you hold the throttle stick to the bottom /left instead? You do have to hold the stick to the bottom right for a few seconds for it to arm.Sorry I can't be more help. I hope you get it sorted soon.
