This recording's interpretation at 02:52 is my favorite of all the performances I have heard of this piece. Since the opening bars, this is the first bold announcement of the theme introduced in La Folia. Transcribing from the piano version to the orchestral adaptation, one gains an appreciation for the stateliness of this moment. Many performances on piano initiate this section very light and staccato, but that leaves a very short time to crescendo up to the fortissimo a few measures later. Despite the bouncing octave variation of this theme several bars later, this theme is unique in the whole of the piece. Inside this one theme, you have a stately and magnanimous (but not lethargic) announcement of La Folia which progresses into a desire to accelerate into the fortissimo like a cavalry charge on a battlefield. The artist must balance the melody and accelerando with control and decisiveness, weighting their expressiveness in the depth of the crescendo and the change in tempo. The artist must also maintain the articulation and weight of the melody throughout and not be distracted by the intermittent flourishes and embellishments. Within this theme and throughout the entire piece, there is juxtaposition in melodic arrangement, tempo, and volume and this section should contrast well against the light and jovial themes of the Jota later. This is further reinforced by the Folia's final recapitulation in the finale and should be as familiar in the finale as in its announcement.
