    Back about 73 or 74 I was in Big Bend camping when ;something walk up and nestle between my leg. I was in a sleeping bag and was very still, finally started to barely wiggle my legs and the visitor moved on. Looked up a few seconds later and Mr. Skunk was on his way.

    Hello! I'm a subscriber, & a section-hiker & weekend warrior currently. Passed you on-trail in the middle of the afternoon as my trail-sister & I were going SOBO this past Friday! You were expeditiously dominating a rather steep uphill on a decently hot day in the sun with no shade in a narrow section of the trail with lots of underbrush and poison ivy on the edges of the trail. I quickly debated in my head whether to say something or not -- decided I'd write a comment instead & let us all keep truckin'! My trail-sister almost immediately turned to me & asked: "Is that a TH-camr?" I knew. Keep up the great work!

    My experience with skunks. 1- Unlike raccoons, I've run into skunks, porcupines, fox and coyote in the day. I think if they have babies in the den, fox and coyote are out more in the day. Raccoons out in the day are more worrisome as they are much more nocturnal. 2- It takes ALOT to get a skunk to spray you. They really want to run away.

      There is a Texas park on the Frio River called Garner. I made the mistake of taking my garbage to a dumpster at a late hour and there about 10 skunks hiding next to the dumpster. They ran from me but I believe one sprayed the side of the dumpster, and everyone was complaining about the smell the next morning. I did not get sprayed, but I was not popular at the campsite for a few hours.

    This episode brought back some memories! In 2016, my wife and I drove the entire Blue Ridge Parkway from south to north, and took a picture of ourselves when we finished beside the sign at 7:53. We also had run into 3 SOBOs earlier at the Montvale Overlook. Such good memories!

    I absolutely adore skunks! I had one for awhile - a young one that had zero fear of people. Kept him safe over winter, acclimated him back to the wild in spring. Night watchman who originally rescued him, saw him frequently for several years after he was released and he was doing well. He never attempted to spray, but had a Doberman at the time, and he would raise his tail to her occasionally, but never sprayed. It takes a lot for them to. Had one here in NH living in my barn for awhile - my Shepherd walked up to her a few times, but she would just waddle away. Their personalities are much like cats and they love snuggles - at least mine did.

    Saw you (or your doppelganger) on the push into Front Royal when I was sobo on a monster day hike (I was wearing a camo headband and bright red mickey marathon shirt). It had been a mother nature confused kind of day with some freezing rain in the morning, likely courtesy of that you didn't say much but definitely had that look on your face that you were ready to get on down into town! Although you were the first thru I saw that day, a surprising number of nobo thru hikers were behind you for this early in the season. Keep on keepin on!

    I’ve run into skunks a lot growing up in WA with forests literally as my backyard. We walked to school and crossed paths with skunks pretty often. Other animals hunt at night to protect themselves. My theory is that skunks fear so one so they do as they please. Lol. Thanks for sharing your adventures.

    I've enjoyed following your journey for several months and appreciate learning a lot. One area I'd like to know more detail is the cost of each shuttle and distance so I have a rough idea what I might expect. Perhaps after each ride add that to your video clip would be short and very helpful. Even if it's free to you, ask them their normal fee (per mile?) and if purely by donation what you would typically give. That would really be helpful. Thanks!

    • @markcummings6856
      @markcummings6856 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pretty much any shuttle “into town” relatively nearby a trail averages $10 - $20.
      Long shuttles- the Average all up and down the AT is $1.50 - $2.00 per mile.

    Hi Taylor, I am from North Ga. near the southern terminus of the A.T. and I sure would like to have a dialogue with you on your experience hiking SNP. My son and I are planning a hike there on the first week in Oct. and we wanted to do around 50 miles give or take a few either way! So...I have a few questions, like 1. Should I pack for much colder weather (knowing that you aren't a meteorologist LOL) 2. Would like to do a little slack packing, will the places you found closed be open in early Oct.? 3. Do you think that a hammock set-up is doable (I have down underquilt} 4. Is there a certain section that you would suggest that would fit a 50+or- hike with good pay-offs, and maybe certain areas that I could avoid. I wish that I could do the whole thing, but am relegated to 6 days! We are experienced hikers having done all 70 something miles of the GSMNP, a goodly portion of the BMT near us, the Art Loeb trail in the Shining Rock Wilderness of N.C., etc. My son is leaving for his own through hike in the early spring of next year and would like to use this as a sort of shakedown before he leaves!

BTW, I was camped at a shelter on the North Country Trail here in Pennsylvania once and while sitting on the deck of the shelter a skunk walked right under my legs. The damn thing actually brushed up against me !! It was quite freaky.

    Have you received any guidance or pushback regarding filming in the National Parks? Late last year and early this year, a few hiking-related TH-cam channels were lamenting the (re)inforcement of National Park Service (NPS) rules requiring permits for commercial filming within National Parks, as their revenue-generating videos on TH-cam would be defined as commercial. The NPS site says "Federal law requires a permit for all commercial filming, no matter the size of the crew or the type of equipment. This includes individuals or small groups that don’t use much equipment, but generate revenue by posting footage on websites, such as TH-cam and TikTok. The primary focus of the NPS, however, is on commercial filming that has the potential to impact park resources and visitors beyond what occurs from normal visitor use of park areas. Examples of this type of filming are productions that use substantial equipment such as sets and lighting, productions with crews that exceed 5 people, and filming in closed areas, wilderness areas, or in locations that would create conflicts with other visitors or harm sensitive resources." Obviously you're not impacting the park resources like a large crew, and you're careful to not let vlogging negatively affect someone else's experience in the park, so you're not the primary focus of the NPS, though you technically require a permit. I see lots of hiking-related, revenue-generating TH-cam channels posting video from days in the Smokies, etc. so it seems most are proceeding, presumably without the permit. Has the NPS advised that individual hikers can go ahead and document their trips within the National Parks and generate revenue from the video, no permit necessary? Note that I am enjoying your videos and I am personally glad you are posting. I'm just curious to know about the rule and its effect on this year's TH-cam hikers.

    Skunks out during the day in the Spring is not that uncommon especially in rural and wooded areas. Mommas have to feed their young and so May forage during the daytime too. That one appeared to be acting normally. You would have to be aggressive toward one to get sprayed. They can carry rabies but not actually present the symptoms so many states do not allow them to be kept as pets. If you see one acting strangely or having difficulty moving along steer clear as it may be rabid.

    Skunks are nocturnal by nature they typically do their foragIng at night and are rarely seen during the daytime. If you spot a skunk during the day that is abnormal skunk behavior and may hint at a rabies infection.
